How many other schools have hired someone to help in their search for a head coach ?

Executive search firms are fairly common for these sorts of positions. Their job is supposedly to seach for candidates, vet them (so you don't get nasty surprises), arrange meetings. If you've ever worked with a recruiter or headhunter, then it's sort of a supercharged version of that.
Now your mileage may vary with regards to the expertise of these firms, but the idea of using one is pretty standard.
Looks like a whole bunch use it. Whether better to not use outside help, who knows.

Boy...nobody does anything on their own anymore...waste of money IMO....hire them and you end up hiring who you liked even before you hired them minus mucho dinero's...geez..
We're paying around $75,000 which isn't a lot and doing checks on our own haven't really worked out well
Honestly mildone...I'm not even sure but I assumed it would be more...if that's the case better safe than sorry.
based on the idea that this process is limited to a very very few RU individuals (Hobbs, Barchi, Brown) .... and that there seems to be next to zero leaks ... would say that the outside firm is doing at least one part of the job quite well.

I didn't think in Kirby Smarts case it would be necessary..wasn't he long considered to be the next HC there and possibly the real reason Richt lost his job...I know he's an ex Ga player and alum so they hardly needed a search to find or vet someone long on their list and it was truly his dream job.
Disagree. They're job is to do a lot of legwork that the AD simply won't have time to do (assuming you want him to hire someone in a short amount of time)....do vetting, ask recruits and coaches for their input, set up phone calls and meetings, etc. In addition it allows someone to talk informally to potential candidates to gauge interest in a way that won't get those candidates in trouble for speaking directly to another school's AD.
Thanks but after seeing the cost from mildone it does seem cost effective and helpful.I thought the price would be higher.
One of the main things the outside firms can do is contact potential new hires while the current coach is still employed. If a school knows they are going to fire their coach or they want to find out the interest from a coach who is currently still coaching his team then the search firm can reach out to him or his agent and see if any interest and the firm reports back to the school that hired them then. This makes it to where schools are not tampering and can also always say "WE have not contacted or interviewed anyone" when in fact the research firm is doing it for them. Many coaches also have have it in their contract that they won't actively search for a job while employed by current school to go to a different school. Using the search firm means they have not actually talked to a different school but have talked with research firm.

It's about deniability:

If USC used a search firm to gauge interest, USC can deny contacting Chip and vice-versa. Win-win.
The other aspect that gets addressed is full compliance with search & hiring policy & procedures - University provides search firm with current University search & hiring policy & procedure documents - they procure & compile all requisite elements - construct complete dossiers on all candidates. University compliance authority audits to confirm all requirement have been satisfied.
Yes, screw-ups happen ... but you are far better protected if you took reasonable & customary steps to avoid oversights - far better than if you just decided to 'wing-it' on your own.

These people are able to approach people that don't want it known they're interested in another job. Big business uses this tactic all the time to find and arrange meetings w people not known to be looking that are.
