would be tied for first place in the SEC West at this point in the season? I'll freely admit that I didn't- I predicted 30 wins and 10 SEC wins. I'm glad I was wrong.
And despite the last game, we played very well against Ole Miss this year- once in Jackson/Pearl and also on the road. I don't know that we can claim the mantle of the best program in the state based on one year, but the way we played against them and USM, I think we certainly opened some eyes. We were also on the front page of the Perfect Game website earlier this year- people are starting to notice MSU baseball again- and not because we have some crazy head coach who wants to take down the NCAA single handedly and is the only man in the world that still uses a typewriter.
It's also worth mentioning that we have a better hitting team, a better pitching team, and our fielding is better- based on stats than Ole Miss. This despite the fact that Bianco is an alleged pitching guru. Watching the entire series, it was pretty evident that we were the better coached team.
We've come a long way- but there is still a lot of work to do- this season and for the future. We still have a chance to win the West. The odds of doing so may not be in our favor, but regardless, just being in a pennant race will benefit our younger players in the future. We will likely go to the SEC Tournament, and we will go to a regional- which will also be a great experience for our players now and also again for the future. Also, we need to continue to add talent and we need to build depth. That was a major problem under the last regime- they would bring in a guy to be the first baseman for four years, and he would be the only guy brought in- Stephen Head be damned. That was a problem when a guy like Bunky Kateon wouldn't work out because it would leave a BIG hole in the lineup.
We have a big game against Memphis on Tuesday at Autozone, and then LSU for the weekend starting Thursday. Our fans need to show up to Dudy-Noble Field this weekend and give this team some support. They've earned it this year. Plus, it will be senior weekend- I assume that they will be honored on Sat.- but I'm not 100% on that. Jarrod Parks deserves a big ovation this year- and really the other seniors deserve one as well. They've put in a lot of hard work.
Let's go kick some *** and make Ben McDonald cry.
