I see it's slated for another 20M makeover. What are they doing to it this time?

The first time the "renovation" was just on the auditorium (stage, seating, sound equip). This time they will be renovating the rest of the building, which needs it.

last time it was a touch of renovating here and there, mainly in the auditorium.

It's a no win situation. It can't be left as is because it is a substandard building. It can never ever be torn down and rebuilt. Hell, the Archives people wouldn't let State tear down a old house, it had to be moved instead.

My brother was in class on the second floor in '89 when a 4x4 piece of ceiling plaster came crashing down during a lecture. Soon thereafter I think it was "renovated". That was before the theatre addition was ever conceived.

Truth be known, it should probably be razed... but I know. Tradition n'all.

Lee Hall is on the National Historic Building registry and therefore can't be torn down. So unless we want a condemned building in the middle of campus, we have no choicebutto renovate. However, this will be the first major renovation to the core part of the building in some time. Personally, I wish we could just tear it down and rebuild it just like Swalm, but since that can't happen you have to work with what you have.

if MSU did raze it?

I'm all for maintaining historical buildings, battlefields, etc.... so, if there's gonna be a renovation, it needs to be done correctly (looking to the future). Basically, this means that the facade is "strengthened" while the interior is completely gutted. The wooden skeleton is replaced with steel, the floor plan will/may be modified, etc.

This may be the plan, already.

...but I'm told by someone who owns a house and wishes it wasn't on the list, the process is quite the *****.

Yep. Same thing with the Stennis Institute, that that its a bad place. But I used to know Mary Wiseman. He says you can't so much as put a fresh coat of paint on the place without jumping through lots of federal hoops.

What is the current condition of the mural on the second floor? Does anybody know where this painting came from? I always assumed it was a WPA piece, but I never actually found out.

was listed on the registry, owner couldn't sell the land because of the drive-in's status, any potential owner knew they couldn't develop the property b/c of the drive in. Hewas about to go bankrupt. Poof, one night it burns down...Problem solved!
