How many times did we go for it on fourth?

Our punts had been a disaster waiting to happen all night. The punts that we did get off successfully couldn't stop inside the 20. And besides, our quarterback hit an open receiverin first down territory. Pass should've been caught. And Bama wasn't exactly moving the ball with ease.

there has to be a moment during the playcalling process when you ask yourself what if this doesn't work. what if we drop the pass?

The length of the field and we were at midfield. It didn't seem likely we would have many more opportunities, so we took a chance. We asked the guys to make a play to keep us in the game and maybe get momentum, and tHey didn't execute. I don't think it was an easy call either way. I can see merit both ways. If I felt we could down it inside the 10, I punt. If I think I have a play to get the first, I go for it. Not cut and dried. You're always the goat when you miss it, and the hero when you don't.

We still had a chance in the game, and it was fourth and seven from the 50. With Dylan Farve. It was a desperation call and it showed the team that he had no faith in them at all. It was a "I give up" move. It was a terrible call. Someone people will just defend Mullen for everything.

Against Alabama's D you have to force the issue, especially later in the game. Can't just punt back and forth and expect to eventually execute a 12 play 80 yard drive on that D (although we nearly did that ONCE in the game).

You realize Dylan Favre didn't play bad tonight right? And you realize the play worked right? You also realize the only reason we didn't get the first down is because our "sure-handed" tightend just dropped it right? So how is that a give up call? It was a play that worked and would have put us in a position to actually win the game had we converted. We had to do something offensively. the defense could stop them, but they weren't going to put up touchdowns on the board for us.

You should ask yourself "what if we drop the pass?"? That's the worst loser's mentality I've ever heard.

passes are dropped, plays are broken up, 4th and 7.. there's a whole list of reasons you may not convert. you just have to be prepared for the consequences of not getting it. inthis case it was seven points. I can't believe I an having to argue this **** with so many people. horrible call. the consequences of that dumbass call left us no chance to win. ****

the play didn't work. bama gets the ball at the fifty and easily scores the TD

the alternative:
Punt it. make them drive the length of the field. its the purpose of punting.

No I understand your reasoning of not getting it. I'm just talking about the way you phrased it. "What if we drop the pass"? That is just an awful excuse not to call a play. If you don't expect to catch the passes then you just aren't going to ever win. I understand what you are saying about the defense actually stopping us or something like that, but your reason of actually just dropping a pass is a poor way to coach. I wouldn't have commented if you had used any of the other "whole list of reasons you may not convert"<div>
</div><div>The fact of the matter is that it is yours and some other people's opinions it was a bad call. Other people, like myself, don't think it was a bad call at all. We were losing by 10 to the #2 team in the nation. You don't just play them straight up and win. Trust me, I was there and saw us do that. It didn't work. We had to try to pull out all the stops to beat them. In my opinion, getting that fourth down was the only way we were going to win. It would give us momentum and good field position. Punting had not been going well for us tonight, and our defense was wearing down. The only reason you call it a dumb call is because it didn't work out. The play worked, execution didn't. Not on the coach.</div>

Just to add one more thing, our FGs didn't work either. I guess we should have gone for it on fourth down there instead right? Hindsight sure is a great thing huh?

you make it seem like mullen knew that if we didn't pick up that 4th down it was a guaranteed 7 points for bama.....and the bottom line is the play was there....at some point you have to quit playing scared and try to win the game.....<div>
</div><div>yeah you say we were down 10 at that point.....news flash: we only had 131 yards of total offense.....it wasn't like we were just moving the ball all over the field.....i say why not take the chance when there is only 50 yards to go instead of the whole field.....bama had 386 yards on us....who is to say that they don't go down and score on that drive anyway even if we punt....regardless, they were able to move the ball after the turnover on downs and had we punted their drive would have negated our field position anyway and we would have had to go the length of the field which was unlikely</div><div>
</div><div>you don't get paid millions to make these decisions....there is a reason why</div>
