Would be interesting to look at a play by play and compare that number to last year.
I think we saw considerable progress in Gavin's game yesterday. That cross the body 4th down throw on the scramble showed off the kind of physical tools the kid has.
Still a long way to go but in the near future we may have a legitimate B1G 10 QB.

We threw four times on first down all of last year.

Excluding the kneel down looks like 50/50 (5 out of 10 drives - and one of those runs was wimsatt running) run or pass first play.

Compared to the Nebraska game last year which was 4 passes and 10 runs.

Said last year we had too many 3rd and 8. Need to throw on first down more.

That pass was a thing of beauty, which not too many QBs could have made so well running to their left and throwing back across their body - not the kind of throw coaches love when their QBs make (a bit dangerous into coverage), but he executed it perfectly. Also loved his gorgeous TD pass to Strong, which was thrown only where he could catch it in the corner of the endzone.

He didn't have a perfect day, but he had a very good one and I especially liked how he threw away several passes when he might have forced dangerous passes into coverage last year. He also ran well and I can't wait to see him pulling the ball out and running outside in wide open space when the ends crash inside on the ball fake - was there several times, but he didn't ake it.

Hoping he runs more in the future. When a pass play isn’t there. Think there were opportunities on some throws the outside never seemed to be utilized.

Forget the score, TOP or anything else.
This is most encouraging to me from yesterday.

Having a process that optimizes the offense - throwing on 1st down.

Hopefully this maintains as games get closer and the opponents improve.
If we revert back to “establish the run early” then we’ll lose all the good momentum built from the NW game.

Also the keeper on the RPO mesh seemed to be open a few times. Gotta feeling we're gonna see some big gains off that.

It was very encouraging to see us go out take that approach for a change , but I think we’ll probably see a mix of game start approaches based on our opponent. Remember that we haven’t even seen our pre-season top 2 RB or projected top wide out options yet. The playbook for Sunday was likely adjusted to accommodate what the staff felt the guys we had available would execute best.

Also note that while it’s really encouraging that our OL was able dominate NW’s defensive front, there are unfortunately many games on the schedule where we know going into it that won’t be the case. NW only broke through a couple times with pressure the whole game. With Kyle (and Aaron) though it seems we have RBs that block well for a nice change that will hopefully open up more ways for us to move the football against tougher defensive fronts. I’m guessing when we get Sam back there will be more design run plays simply because he’s a stud.
