How much money have you personally had in your possession at one time?

Whether it be bank account or on your person. I think the most I have ever had is 6 grand.

But that seems low, wondering what the average person would say.

Me and a buddy had the rough equivalent of $250kUS in French francs on us after making a big deal at the World Cup in my ticket scalping days. The net profit was about $40k and it wasn't ours though, we were being backed by a large ticket broker at the time. The taxi ride back to their office was pretty stressful.

Handled a real estate closing from a lady in eastern Ky one time, buying a small condo here in Lexington, she told me it was a cash deal meaning in layman's terms, she would bring a check to closing instead of a bank loan, like 1000 other cash deals I have handled.

Only when we get to the end, she pulls out a grocery sack and counts out $64,000 in cash on my conference table. It was late in the day, I had to call my bank to stay open to make the deposit, fill out all the federal forms, etc. Only the next day, the bank said there was only $63K in the stack when they opened up the vault, which I knew was BS because me and the seller both counted the money and came up to the same, $64K. My firm had to eat the $1000 shortage in my escrow. To this day, I still think one of the bank employees helped themselves to $1000

Since then, have an iron clad rule, no cash at closings.

There's no doubt somebody pocketed $1000

Commission checks for $36,000 and $22,000 when I was in real estate. That was gross before my broker got his split and taxes. The $36K I invested in the down payment on a rental property of my own. The $22K every appliance and system in my house broke including the HVAC before it cleared the bank. At least it was nice having the money to replace everything and not have to go into debt.

God send for sure.

$15 grand in hand (was buying a truck and the owner would only accept cash) and $95k in a savings account - doing some home remodeling so kept some bonus money mixed in with my emergency fund.

I made a couple of deposits at a previous job for over $5 million each.

I got a $350k check from an investor for my current gig.

Don't like carrying large sums of cash. Did a RE deal that required $15k at closing once. I was nervous as **** and packing heat while I had that on me.

I was looking to buy a Harley about a month or so ago and carried 15k in cash around with me for about 2 weeks.

Cash:

College years: Drove a buddy with $6,000 in a duffle bag from an undisclosed Kentucky town to the hood of Nashville to exchange for 5 lbs of brick weed in a similar duffel bag. That 6 grand belonged to about 10 people. My buddy was armed. Most intense 3 hour round trip of my life that I wouldn’t dare make again.

Check: Deposited $18k for a former employer.

Sold my house a few years ago and had a check for $255k to deposit but abruptly wrote the same amount out to pay down principal on my current house a few weeks later. Paying said house off by the end of the year. I hate debt (you don't hear that much from a banker.)

What type of banker?

I had $112,000 in my checking account for 3 days a few years back. We used a loan from my parents as a down payment on a home while we sold the one we lived in. Had to write $100,000 right back out. My checking account never gets much above $3,000 since we have all our retirement and savings direct deposited where it goes so that made me nervous about my debit card and ID theft.

On my person? However much the cashier's check was when I made the down payment on either my previous car or the one I own now as I paid about half the price when i bought it then got a loan for the rest.

Have no idea what the max I've had in the bank is.

Had around $300K in a bag that I carried aboard a ship, pre-deployment. Had about $400K in the safe at one time. My numbers did not compare to a carrier but it was all "mine". Value is over two times that now so it was enough to increase your pucker factor a bit!

Also had to have a safe drilled for a client who had died suddenly, where we found $119K wrapped up in bundles. I carried it the trunk of my car to the bank in a gym bag, and watched the tellers personally count it and give me a receipt. (see above post, see, I do learn from past mistakes!!)

I had a sweet office upstairs in the previous house I owned. It was decorated with lots of sports stuff. I had like 12 boxes of Tiger Woods Buick special edition golf balls stacked on a book shelf. Well anyway, I always kept between $10-15K cash stored in the 7th box down (don't ask me why the 7th) under the 4 sleeves of golf balls inside the box. I have always stashed a bunch of cash in a secret, but handy spot in case I ever needed it. Still keep some, but not quite that much. Currently i have about $7K in $1000 bank bands folded up in a pair of dress socks in the bottom of my sock drawer. Weird I know, but I just like to have cash that I can get to.

Almost $1M in bonus checks I had to deliver to my clients. Remember looking at those checks for what seemed like forever and thinking about what it could do for my life was something else.

I thought I might be the winner of this thread. I had a $1.75 million check in my possession for a couple days. I had defended a case where the plaintiff ended up quadriplegic. Clearly my client’s fault and his employer had a $2M policy.

I hated that the carriers I represented settled some cases instead of going to trial but this guy deserved his settlement. Every damned penny. Didn’t begrudge that settlement at all.

Would have mailed it but plaintiff attorney asked me to hold it so he could pick it up personally.

I got to assist a person wiring $385,000,000 once.

You have never felt the pressure of quadruple checking account numbers until that much coin is in limbo.
