How much of our playbook did Mullen hold back?

I know defensively we didn't seem to to much blitzing if any. Maybe a zone blitz. But did we stunt at all?

And offensively I think we might have gave a few hints (opening play), but how vanilla was everything? And will having AD in the backfield change things the QB's do much?

I have no idea what I am going to see this weekend. We showed very little. If this was Mullen's second year opener, we would have scored at least three more touchdowns.

Mullen coached a very good game all around.

Is there any reason to hold anything back for LSU? I think not. Go for it all these next two games. Try your best to start 3-0. Don't force things, obviously. But don't keep much hidden if you need it to win against the Tigers or the Dores.

It's hard to say without knowing the playbook, but I think the biggest thing Mullen wanted to do last week was make sure that we could run our base plays above anything else. And I think we did that. And I think he wanted to see what we needed to work on with those plays, and I think we accomplished that to. The exception being the WR pass at the beginning of the game.

I think AD is our most important player for us on offense. Without him, it cost us at least 14 points on Sat. Ducre is just not the home run threat that AD is, and I'm hoping that AD won't put the ball on the ground like Ducre did. I think AD will do really well with some of the zone blocking schemes that Mullen is running. The other thing about Dixon is the fact that he has really good hands, and we can split him out in the slot some or throw it to him coming out of the RB spot.

Hopefully, we'll have a few wrinkles to throw at Auburn that we didn't show in the first game. But, the QB spot worries the crap out of me and so does the defensive backfield. My better judgment tells me that we need to redshirt Russell, but I don't know if we can make it through our schedule with Lee and Relf. Especially if Relf is being counted on to tote the ball against bigger, faster, SEC quality defenses. Lee is only effective on roll outs due to his lack of height. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Bumphis lined up at QB in the wildcat formation a few times to give defenses a different look. Mullen has his work cut out for him for sure. On the bright side, we know that he understands the importance of the QB position and will work to bring in good signalcallers for us. The other good thing is that our younger players (especially some of the freshmen) look to be SEC quality players. Boyd, Cox, Green, C. Smith, Bumphis, Heavens, Mitchell are all good ones and they'll be around for a while.

but this group of Fr. has some of the best looking Fr. we've had in a while. I can't wait for them to be juniors and seniors. It seems like most of our more talented players are the Fr. and So.

The best QB I saw for us was Bumphis.

I agree with you. This group of freshmen look really good. We just need to make sure that we continue to build with our next recruiting class.

but just think if Relf turns out to be a dependable QB and Russell successfully redshirts this season. Then we pick up Cam Newton in the offseason then we would be 3 deep next season at QB with 3 of the best quarterbacks we have had on campus in years.

And then Russell can be the back up for a couple of years. It's almost like we're actually trying to develop a QB.

I saw some pretty good passes with defenders in the vicinity... maybe he has improved on his accuracy?

I agree as well. Couple that with the fact that nothing helps recruiting next year's freshmen like playing this year's freshman and it really gives me hope for the future.

but I swear it's not intentional. I like Relf, and I like the running demension that he brings to us. His pass to Green for a TD was really nice, and he did have some nice throws. But, I don't remember him completing many passes deep.

You have to remember that I've seen Bumphis play QB in high school against Madison Central when Garrett was out with appendicitis, and I was really impressed with his arm.

It was more of a compliment towards Bumphis than a slight towads Relf.

I just hope that Mullen can bring Cam Newton in while reassuring Russell that he'll get PT as well. I'm just impatient I guess. I can see where we're headed, I just want to hurry up and get there. I would probably look at picking up 1 or 2 JUCO corners to shore up the defensive backfield too. QB depth (quality depth) at MSU has been lacking for decades. I'd be giddy if we were to pick up Cam Newton, continue to develop Relf, and bring Russell along at a normal pace to take the reins in a few years. We just need to grease out about 6 wins this season to show recruits that we are heading in the right direction. Our next few ball games are huge. They are the most "winnable" SEC games that we'll have all year. We need to come up big this weekend. I hope that AD brings his A game this Saturday.

It's too bad Langston decided to get arrested. He would have been one of the JUCO corners that you were talking about.

Our corners of the future are Damien Anderson and Dennis Thames. Since one is a So., and one is a Fr. a JUCO guy or two would be helpful.

I hope we use Rashad Henry as an athlete on offense as opposed to defense.

I believe the Egg Bowl at Scott Field is now a "winnable" game. Not likely, but surely a possibility now. I had read all the preseason hype on them. They may attain it, but I saw weakness on their OL and Snead appeared to have regressed a little. They have some work to do.

If our young corners continue to develop I wouldn't be suprised to see Langston play WR. He doesn't have a redshirt year left, and if he gets eligible the coaches are going to try and get him ready to play this year. Anderson, Broomfield, and Watson should all be solid corners going into the next season. Broomfield was one of the most impressive young guys I saw during the game.

I think Thames future is at safety, and I wish he would have started out there.</p>

I liked the energy he brought to the game and he played with a lot of effort. Good to see these guys are trying to prove they should start even when the game was already decided. our 2nd and 3rd stringers played like they wanted to be starters.
