How overrated is Tyler Russell?

Looks like we've got a QB out on left handed cigarette suspension, and he still can't crack the two-deep. Seriously, a 17ing walk-on who barely got here in time for classes is ahead of him right now, while "The Savior of MState QB Woes" was attending practices all spring and was working with WRs in voluntary drills all summer. Dude is going to be a huge bust, if this is the best he can do.

Maybe Mullen doesn't want to burn a promising player's redshirt this late into the season. I'm sure if Russell had played at USP he'd be leading the SEC in QB rating by now.

he really doesnt want to play Stegall either this season and will not unless his hand is forced..meaning Tyson gets hurt.

About cracked up laughing when Dan told the honest truth about Tyler running the scout team this week and doing a damn good job at it due to being the only one on the team who can sling the ball like he can.
Its sad but true, our best passing QB is running the scout team this season.

BTW.. during the call-in show, after jim played the call of the game from the past.. this weeks was vs East TN State in 1998, during the break he leaned over and said.. East TN State..now thats who you are supposed to be playing for a homecoming game, not someone like Houston.

They beat you. Get over it.

Why burn a redshirt almost halfway through the season? Besides that, Lee is our starter. Stegall won't play unless Lee is injured.

Like everyone else has said, they're trying really hard to redshirt him. They would rather play Stegall than burn Tyler's redshirt at this point.

Now, God forbid, but if Tyson was out for the year or something they might reconsider. But that is the only scenario where Tyler doesn't redshirt.

Russell is not over rated . He should have been a 5 star. I have seen him play many times and he's way better than any thing on the field now. Mullen is just holding his fire until next year.

Comparsion sake. I think Mcelroy looks better than Wilson at Bama. But I doubt he would have looked this good last year. It takes time to develope a QB. Ask Satan.

I think people have sufficiently hit that point, but what about the fact that Russell is similar in style to Lee. Both are passers. If you use a two QB system effectively, you need a passer, and a runner.

but it is hard to tell. It is even more sad that this all could be coming from you still being upset over what happened in a high school football game last year

Yes, both are passing quarterbacks, but that term ("passing quarterback") is way too loose. Tyson is a guy who likes to roll out and just take what the defense gives, to dink and dunk. Which is fine. But, sometimes he reads low to high and misses on a big play.
Russell, on the other hand, likes to throw the ball down the field. He is the best deep ball thrower I have seen in person. Not to say he doesn't throw the shorter passes well, he does, but the thing that makes him special is the ability to stretch the defense vertically.

However, Todd, on your greater point about needing contrast to make a 2 QB system work ,you are completely correct. Just wanted to point out there is a difference between the two other than height.

in a two QB system next year sure makes dealing with what we are dealt with this year more tolerable.

He's obviously good enough to kick South Panola's ***. I guess you've missed the point that he's a true freshman that we're trying to redshirt this year.

Weren't you the same guy who believed that we needed to play only Relf and no Tyson Lee so he would "develop" into a good QB by the end of the year? Thanks God you are not running the program. There is little reason to burn Tyler Russell's red shirt this year considering the lack of experience at WR this year.

I hope that's the truth. The biggest problem in trying to make a big pass play with Lee is that he can't get the ball downfield with air under it. So any time the DB is a step or few behind the WR, there isn't enough air under the ball to get over the DB.

Can we give this a rest. With or without Russell we still have the toughest schedule in the country. He might have given us 1 more win this year. Lee did not lose the GT game. This year was about scraping out any wins we could. Everyone knew we were not going to be a contender. This team is not like Ole Miss that had the talent not a coach. He will be the QB of the future.

The only true baiters never openly state on the message board that they were baiting, so I agree with you on this one. True baiters say stupid **** that they don't even necessarily believe just to get a reaction out of people, and they never have to explain that they were baiting because they aren't worried about what a bunch of buffoons on a silly, insignificant internet message board think of them.

Arceto Clark.

You do not play a guy six games into the season, period, EVER. Unless you are a total <17>ing idiot like Croom & McCorvey. Mullen is as far from that as he can be.

I think Mullen wanted to do two things, maybe three:

1) Get some receivers worth a damn. McRae was the only returning starter, and on a badly broken leg at that. Nobody saw Leon coming on like he has, Bunphis is finally getting it - block on plays you aren't getting the ball, and you'll be on the field a lot more. We have redshirts plus I am certain Mullen gets 2-3 solid WR's this recruiting class.

2) If Tim Tebow didn't have the freakin body of a fullback, he'd never have seen the field as a freshman. QB sneaks and runs, occasional jump pass. Chris Leak did the resst. Tyler needs to redshirt, it's a huge adjustment from high school to college. How did 20 star recruit Jimmy Clausen do in year 1 at Notre Dame? You're welcome.

3) Get an OL. We lose Jenkins, return everyone else, and Mullen BETTER get at least three good ones in this recruiting class. A solid OL is the most important thing to a young QB, good receivers are the second. Russell will have both next year, why waste a year?

1, From what I understand, Stegall has 4 to play 3. Don't know if its right but thats what I heard.
2. Stegall is more physically mature.
3. Stegall is more mentally mature.
4. Who wouldn't burn his redshirt since he's NOT on scholly over Russell?
5. Your and dubmass!
6. You could be fishing and if so, my answer are for those who said that Stegall would never see the field when I predicted he would 3 weeks ago.

I wish we'd save Stegall's redshirt today. I think he & Russell both have potential. I'd rather suffer with Encalade, Bumphis, or anyone else at QB than waste a couple guys who might be decent QBs for us.

And for the usual suspects: Ray Charles called. He said even he could see we're redshirting Russell at all costs when he didn't play aGAINST JSU. Insinuate The Savior might not be that great, and TO THE RESCUE!!!!
