How to get players fired up

While watching the debacle Saturday and how unenthusiastic our players were, I remembered back to Duke playing UK at home a few years ago in OOC play. UK was still pretty good, but Duke had guys like Jay Williams and Carlos Boozer (I believe this was the year they lost to Indiana in the tournament under Mike Davis).

UK got up by double digits early and Coach K got so pissed that he pulled all 5 of his starters. He also told them to cheer on their replacements. With the bench players in, the 2nd Duke team picked up 2-4 points on UK in about 5 minutes, with the starters standing up and getting fired up over the play of the bench players. Coach K finally put the starters back in after 5-10 minutes of play, and they soundly defeated UK, being re-energized and ready to play.

Why doesn't Stans do stuff like this when our starters are stagnant? Yes, I realize Duke has McDonalds all-americans on their bench and we do not. If you are sucking though, don't pull a Croom and be stubborn and keep doing what is failing.

but you are comparing stans to coach K. There is no comparison. We can ask a lot of questions as to why Stans does certain things, but there are very few logical answers. for the most part, I just think he wants to do it his way and is not interested in changing a damn thing

For the same reason you can't hit a 2 iron to 2 feet and stop it. Ability, MFer. Ability.

...Stansbury wants to keep his job.

You put 5Riley Benock types on the floor against SEC competition & it's going to get hilariously ugly real fast.

Duke is always deep enough to allowtheir coach to show his *** in this way.

Meanwhile, considering what Stansbury has to work with, Stansbury is always forced to cover his ***.

If Stans had pulled all5 starters for 5 minues we'd have lost by 26 instead of by 16.

It seems like we mentioned it every 2 minutes over the PA how we beat them in sec tourney. I think we fired them up pretty well, didn't work so well though.

During a practice round, Freddy hits a 5 iron about 210 ans backs it up 5 feet from the pin. Guy in the gallery asks him how he backed up a 5 iron. Freddy asks the guy how far he hits his 5 iron. The guy says about 175. Freddy asks, "why in the hell would you want to back it up?"

The players wouldn't care. I actually thought about that and would have applauded the move..but again..he doesn't have the respect of the players so it would not have had its desired effect.
