Please explain the rule to me, it bounced behind home plate. I thought that was a foul.

It’s not fair or foul until it’s either touched or passes first or third base. Somebody could hit a ball five feet foul and if it spins back fair before it’s touched or crossed first or third base it’s a fair ball.

The ball hit first behind home plate but it spun forward and wasn’t touched by the catcher until it was over home plate, which is fair territory. Hence, since it was first touched in fair territory it is a fair ball.

You have to run that out. Don't put it in the umpire's hands. And it was a fair ball. Hit behind the plate but bounced up in front of the plate where the catcher grabbed it. Heads up play on his part. I'm afraid all of those #1 recruiting classes is starting to show their mettle. If we pull it out tomorrow, I'll be as happy as any of you. But if we don't, it will be because they're just more talented than we are. No shame in what we've done this season if this is the end of the road. Go back to February and see how many posts had us only winning 3-4 games in the SEC.

I questioned it at first then went back and rewatched. He definitely caught it in fair play, just ahead of home plate. Very heads up play. Learned something new tonight.

Anyone that doesn't think it was fair should think about a bunt that goes down the line foul and sneaks back into fair territory. As other posters said it can cross back and forth a dozen times before the bags at first and third, it's fair or foul based on where it is touched first or where the umpire rules it stops dead. Only exception is if it hits something that is not part of the field of play in foul territory. At that point it's automatically a dead ball and foul.

In a side note Mangum should have run. He is a hustle guy and hustle guys always run it out. I am too young to have watched all of Pete Rose's career, but I remember the end. He would of run, unless he knew for sure he could not make it close. At that point, he would have turned around and socked the catcher in the stomach before he could field the ball instigating a bench clearing brawl. Hustle guys should never be an easy out. Learning experience for Jake.
