Forums are gone as of 10/29- new web page eliminates. Btw the new web is lousy and far inferior to the old. Now only here to post and listen.

The Daily Press has no one to blame but itself. For years it was a super forum with a big following. Then the Daily Press got greedy and wanted posters who did not receive the paper to pay to participate in the forum. Predictably, the hrvarsity forum went to pot in a hurry, and remained a ghost town until the Press pulled the plug.

I hate when I go online to read reports from other areas and either I can't read them without purchasing a subscription or either I can only read a certain amount of articles a month. Not all papers are like that but seems like more and more are going that route.

I will say the best newspapers in my opinion for extensive high school coverage are the Roanoke Times, Tricities.com which covers far SWVA and the Bluefield Daily Telegraph which is actually a WV paper but covers a lot of VA high schools. Also the Free Lance Star out of Fredericksburg isn't bad either.

The Times says you can view 25 pages in a 30-day period, which is more lenient than most other papers that have paywalls in place.

I would agree with your list of sites that have the information out there for free. Of the pay newspaper sites, both the Daily News-Record out of Harrisonburg and the Winchester Star do a very good job, as well and both Dave Johnson and Marty O'Brien at the Daily Press do good work. In most cases, the high school beat reporters throughout Virginia are all very good, but some are given more flexibility or leeway in how they can share their work than others.

That stinks because the Roanoke Times and Tricities.com are my two favorites and Tri Cities just went that way recently as well. I think theirs is 15 over 30 days. Guess its a money thing but I enjoy following other programs throughout the state but am not going to pay for it. Plus the Times does extensive coverage of Virginia Tech as well. Although reading about them lately just upsets my stomach. Lol.

As for a small local newspaper we in this area are blessed to have the Rappahannock Times which covers the Northern Neck and Tidewater Districts. They aren't online but if you're ever in this area its more than worth the sixty cents just to read the sports section.

I use topic view by default, but most of the time I have to switch to thread view to see which posts people are replying to. Most Rivals boards, like the college basketball board, just use topic view, so more people quote the post they are responding to. You always quote posts, which I appreciate, but most posters here don't.

Plus I've been told that many people don't post here because thread view is the default and they aren't that aware of topic view, and they come and see the wall of text and get intimidated or annoyed.




Thread view is circa 2003, but at least it's not as bad as UVA's Sabre message board.

When our turn to switch to the new messageboards comes up, I'll try to make the default topics, if I can.

The thing about the Sabre is that many of the posters there love that format. When TSL (their VT counterpart) switched to a linear, topic view default, they lost a huge part of their audience. Even after switching back, that audience has not returned.

I don't mind threaded view, but yours is a good reminder to use the quote function no matter what view you default to.
