So, what we have developing in high school football is what is basically happening now in the college ranks with the transfer portal and NIL. High school football anarchy.
Anarchy? Genie is out of the bottle..... Football is being ruined by transfers. These boys, parents & coaches need to toughen up and play for what matters......not Snapchat likes!

Are you upset that its out in the open or more teams are deciding to play the game that top teams and families have been doing for years? It was more subtle and behind doors back in the day but it has always happened.

The college NIL is the same money that was being given under the table at big schools. Parents mving their kids around has been happening for a very long time

Agree this has been happening since the 80/90s. Think the biggest difference now is its more out in the open and teams are stacking at certain schools. Its also being done more "legally" with parents researching schools and actually moving into new school districts. With more high schools and less parity the rich getting richer really kills the product quality. With QBS guys are not gonna wait.

You get a team like Hough they will run off 4 straight in 8A. Excellent academics, good facilities, great coaching, and good diversity. Parents flock their. Remember Indy Dynasty, MC dynasty, Chambers. All fueled by transfers so this is nothing new

My concern is the increased frequency of the transfers and the general societal tolerance of it. I hear what you are saying, and I remember being frustrated losing to Independence High School every year in the playoffs 20 years ago when I played ball. So yes, it has always happened.

But what we are talking about today is different. I think the amount of schools openly doing this has increased and the amount of players transferring has increased. So Sammyk's earlier post about regional powerhouse programs seems much more feasible. But if we decide to embrace this kind of model, won't that impact all of the other sports too? If you can do it in football, why not lax or swimming? If you are an arts kid or a band kid, why can't you transfer to the best program? If you are a high achieving academic student, why can't you transfer?

I'm probably being a bit hyperbolic but this seems like it could be moving to a breaking point with the current public school model.

Folks are already doing this. The biggest difference is the quantity and the open nature of it. QBS are not going to sit any longer in HS or college. Every BCS championship challenger has a portal QB except for OSU. Ole Miss, Oregon, Indiana, Miami, OK, are portal QBS, Parents switch schools for academics, band, specialty programs everyday but we don't care about those only football.

When it was one way coaches, admin, schools all benefitted on the players. They should have slowly put in rules in college vs, the system we have now. This portal era is going to kill HS recruiting cause guys gonna stay in college 5-7 years now. Being greedy and not paying players has backfired.

I know. That's why I used the word anarchy. There's no state governing body or bodies reigning this in. It's going on in every state. It's the selfish "it's all about me" mentality. NIL has contributed to this. Probably parents want their kids to get exposure to be recruited by the best colleges, so their kid can make the make the most NIL money. But, that's how life has gotten, hasn't it?

Affect on recruiting is horrible. Unless your a 5 star you've about got to go to a small college and transfer your way up.

Heard one of Grimsley's young players was paid a pretty penny in NIL deal to transfer in from out of the county, last summer.

The house of cards will fall soon and the programs built on coaching will survive. Enjoy your climb to ruining the game.

School choice
School choice is fair if everyone plays by the rules. Also transfers have been happening for years. Biggest differences is cross county, cross state, and hoarding at certain schools. Keep your eye on Cornelius. This may be their biggest/best portal class yet.

The transfers happen and it’s what it is. With my team South Iredell they just have to play with homegrown players and do the best they can. If you can’t beat them join them. With my conference it’s either Mooresville or Lake Norman. They will be the ones who represent to see who wins the conference. Then when playoff time comes then pick the team you like the best. lol
Davie County will have a say... We'll save this for another topic...

School choice is the worst thing that has ever happened to public school in North Carolina. I will use Winston Salem Forsyth Co schools as my example. When I first started working there in in 2003 every school was pretty decent and pretty much every schools football program had enough kids and was for the most part decent. The quality of football was better and the quality of education was solid. You could be at Parkland and get a quality education and the football at places like Parkland North Forsyth Glenn was very competitive. Then fast forward to 2013 in Winston Salem. You started to see schools like Parkland Glenn North Forsyth take huge hits academically and athletically. Now you have the true have and have not class of schools. Now you pretty much have 4 schools worth a damn. East Forsyth, Tabor , West Forsyth, Reagan. These schools may have the occasional "Down Year" but schools like Parkland, Carver, Glenn, North Forsyth, continue to struggle and are not on the same level as these schools when not too long ago they were

agree 100%. School choice started because of busing. It took WC from a top 50 school nationally to bottom of NC bad academically in 2-3 years. It decimated Carver, Parkland, NF, and Glen, It took Myers Park from good to great academically. The suburban schools, and privates benefited greatly from school choice as they didn't have to be bused to urban schools any longer. So now CMS and Forsyth County have all these high poverty schools with low academics and high poverty because they protect the suburban schools and prevent further white flight. So school choice aint going no where. Its why Hough is Hough because they have the best mix academically, athletically, socially, and diversity.

-Thats why those Forsyth schools you mentioned and low performing CMS schools all have magnet or IB programs to try and get better students to offset and the southern schools dont have magnets to keep certain students out. Once Swann vs. CMS was overturned its become the wild west.

I know I was the HC at Parkland for 6 years and we had to work twice as hard for half as much

I agree with what is being said about school choice. Unfortunately, this is what the state government and the general assembly wants right now. They are pushing for charter schools and private school vouchers. They want school choice amongst the public schools. So as you mentioned you are left with the haves and the have nots. And there is a huge divide between them in many cases. Why not put all this time and energy into making every public school the best it can be?

You did well at Parkland. NO doubt about it.
Thank you I appreciate that but it should not have to be that hard to have "success" . What is being done pretty much has put schools/athletic programs way way in the hole. And that 6 years I would not trade for anything but it sure did take years off of my life thats for sure

100% correct. Wont even touch private school vouchers. Removing the cap and allowing rich folks to go to their private schools for free. Then the state takes their allocated public school money away. ENTITLEMENT to its fullest. Folks wouldn't believe how many lawmakers have their hand in the charter school business and the privatization of school education in NC. Just like the general assembly took over the NCHSAA they are trying to quietly takeover NC school system. Their biggest weapon? School choice.

The term weapon is 100% accurate. Look I moved from NC in August after living there 28 years. I miss the people and family there. I miss the Carolina Skies. NC is a beautiful state with beautiful people BUT as an educator and coach it was smarter to retire move out of state get another teaching job and at least get paid a reasonable salary. What has gone on the past 15 years in NC is criminal and will harm the states population. What is going on in athletics is down right awful and I am still friends with coaches in NC and I do feel for them.
