I was standing there when the call came through. I’m telling you, the vibe was surprise, not payoff.

That’s not to say he wasn’t actively recruiting them, the staff is actively recruiting all the time. But the feeling I got was that they didn’t believe it was a possibility due to the reported monies they were being offered.

The adult dealing for the twins wanted them in the culture at Stillwater. They aren’t in it for money, they are in it for World Medals…or the Dad is/was.

They were pleased with the young men they had committed, but you don’t turn down talent. There needs to be 3deep at every weight. Injuries, shirts and life happens. The focus at that point was RTC, not recruiting…I’ll say that too.
Penn st isn't even 3 deep at every weight and they're dominating. It's proven now you can win a individual title at many places. So most top recruits aren't gonna sit and wait. Penn St has a few who have but it took years of winning

Exactly. I couldve phrased the "wasnt really going after them" better. Chase and Brodie you guys correct me if any part of this is incorrect but to my knowledge they visited and then there wasnt much from their end. We had guys commit (Ramirez, Vega, Jax, Wolbert, Robideau) and most assumed the Raneys were Iowa bound and getting big money. By the time DT got that call his reaction was one of surprise and dare I say maybe even a little confusion lol? So no by then he wasnt really pursuing them per say.

But damn I'm glad that call came ;)
Pan ams may 8-9 the staff and many athletes from the RTC were there so was the Raney family. They committed may 15 believe me DT wasn't surprised

Penn State is super, super deep and I venture to say they’re 30 Wrestlers in the room that could at least start almost everywhere else and the likely have 3 options at every weight save 25 and heavy.

Yeah, it’s obvious that the RTC season started May 1 and little focus was dedicated to it until that date.

I will not believe you, I was standing there when David walked up. If it was expected, they put on a good show to the guys standing around talking before the event. The event was May 5th I believe? I will agree he wasn’t surprised on May 15th.

Amen

Loved the kid, hate see him go, but there wasn’t any room for him. Askren doesn’t have love for OSU, but he is a professional and he may rib some of his kids for going here, but I couldn’t see him manipulating his kids from going to OSU. That being said, any coach will steer their athletes to go to the schools they like. I would if I coached. There would be OSU posters, with athletes, records all over the walls. Go pokes!🤠
There was absolutely room for him. He’ll never lose to Jordan Rainey again. Jax is getting bigger. Kellen is not. 141 lifer.

Stating that would be more plausible if he were still in our room.

Michigan hasn’t done the best job of developing guys and many fall short of expectations. But, he does have Ringer and Real Woods to work with, so things may change there.

I’m not. At all. Not a fan of the Raneys and hated it when the news came down. Hopefully, they’re different people than when one weighed in for the other at the US Open years ago but I don’t think they fit our culture. We’ll see but, for now, I hate it.

With all due respect I’ll defer to DT’s judgement on this.

I agree. And Jax could grow past 141 or he may not.
I did. Handed him cash at his house. You?
Sounds like you live in Wisconsin, so some bias in play I suspect which is ok? Ive always been a fan of Ben since he was in college. Also nobody here wishes bad on Kellen. I really wish he had stayed but it is what it is. Whether he beats or loses to either Raney in the future remains to be seen. As far as them adhering to the culture DT is building, they either will or they wont.

I am an Oklahoma native and OSU grad serving some type of punishment in this frozen tundra going into my 17th Wisconsin winter. I should get some steak knives at 20.

You’re exactly right. I haven’t heard anyone on here wishing bad to Kellen. Nor should they. He is an amazing person. Does privates with my 10 year old and genuinely enjoys it. Love the family. Dad & I are good friends.

I’m just rip **** pissed at how this narrative came about that “we didn’t really want him”. Where else did that come from other than Ben?

I’ve stayed off this forum for a month because I’m clearly not handling all this well. Ha

That narrative was 100% not from OSU.

It came from Ben, Tom Ryan and probably a few other coaches not affiliated with OSU.

I think everyone involved wanted him here. I do think they ran a little short on time and attention w/ everything that was going on with world team prep etc. I will say up front I dont know for sure but I did hear there were repeated attempts at asking for more money that wasnt happening? Dont qoute me on that one because like I said I'm not sure. I will say I wouldve loved for him to have stayed as I loved what I saw in the Raney match. He's gone and thats it. I wish him well and I also wish Ben a perfect and speedy recovery.

I wish him a speedy recovery too. I can do that and still be pissed at him.

They've about 8 guys who wouldn't start at top 25 programs. Go look at the roster

Yes and many believe that and why I commented. In the years past it's been 10-12 guys that wouldn't start on top 25 teams they're as deep now as they've ever been
That’s more accurate.

I was going off discussion where the weight needs to be 3 deep and they all have AA ability

I’m getting a little anxious about 27. I get we are young and it’s not a deep class but sure would like some of these top 10s other than the Stillwater kid

I’m sure that class will come along here in the next year or so. Committed kids will flip, uncommitted guys will commit, and lower ranked guys will develop and rise into the top 10. Don’t fret yet friend, these are the whims of 16 year old kids

No info here, but I think this class will be small. Focused on recruiting our current guys and may sprinkle in a few commits.

I’ll have to look, but I don’t think we have many glaring needs? Maybe @Howie_Fartz can get bored at work today?

I could see you guys grabbing another 125 for depth and competition with Ronnie. Maybe a 165 as well for depth for when Lockett goes up someone to give Routledge competition Hickman may grow as well. Max Konopka CT is a kid I think DT will go after. He's gonna end up being a HWT he's the best big kid in the class of 2027 by far

Ronnie, Rocklin, Rin…I think all 25? I think Rocklin is projected by Willie to be a 33.

You think Nacho will be a 25?

The rest seems right.

Rocklin won't stay a 125 I agree with Willie.

Nacho is a 125.

Rin shrunk his body some to be a 125 it looks like . Weighing in weekly and maintaining it for months at 125 I don't see happening in the future . This year 125 won't be easy to make for him week in week out

I don’t really ask those questions a lot, so you might be 100% on.

He just looks too small for 33 to me. “Rin”

He was 61kg in HS and was 61kg internationally until this year. Japan typically has guys at the optimal weight. He was around John so that weight cutting mentality was obviously instilled 🤣

That’s probably true. I know he’s 61 and I always think it’s smaller than 33…not sure why?

Has he Wrestled 57 at all in the last few years?

That damn blue teams out east has had a few years where they didn’t pick up much in the way of recruits based on needs and what was available.
That’s where we find ourselves currently I’d say. Maybe we get one or two from the class of 27 or maybe none at all. I would imagine we’re focusing on the class of 28. More hammers coming out of that class.
