You are arguing points I didnt make. That's hilarious. I get that HS pulls back again most teams and gets their youth exposure. That's brilliant and shows the forward thinking of the coaching staff. I'm talking about games that were competitive (OS and Manchester). So it was vanilla play calling and holding back their starting defense until the last half of the game....OK. Congrats to the Sprngers on their march towards history and doing what no other program has done. I'm rooting for them if they get past the 757 representative. But all this talk of them being untouchable and incomparable...I can't buy into that.
I have nothing against those kids at HS or the program itself. I go to the same barber shop as some of the players and coaches. East End is my new home and I’ve been supporting HS since I moved to Richmond in 2014 and I’ve always admired their program since they beat GW Danville back in the 2007 basketball state championship. Won’t find a better community support. The way the Springer fans (or bandwagons) act on here is no representation of their program’s character. I don’t have a problem with their fan base but to see the constant discounting opponents is rather annoying. You can’t have a conversation on here without being called out because you give another team credit. You can literally say Highland Springs is the best team in the world and give another team a compliment and they’ll totally disregard the first part and harp on the comment about the other team.. Am I big mad??? Nope.. Every thread is the same story.
HS's schedule was drastically easier last year as compared to this years schedule.
Indian River was headed towards being the #1 seed in C 5, had it not been for Maury beating them in the playoffs! Even though HS was undefeated last year, strength of schedule power ratings had them #2.
The Maury win put HS the 1 seed!
Maury surprised me last year. I was looking forward to IR playing HS, but Maury had other plans. Then of course, HS had plans for Maury. That's what makes these games special, anything can happen.
HS scored at least 67 points 4 times last year, so this brand new "we don't try to beat anyone bad" thing is hilarious, regardless of if it's the starters or backups doing the scoring. The point is, this year's team is simply not capable of scoring that many points because they ARE a step down from last year's team. I'd be shocked if this year's team can utilize a power running game against a good defense. And last year's Manchester absolutely would storm through this year's HS schedule. With all of Oscar Smith's penalties, that game would've been a blowout at halftime.
I was at the CF/Manchester game last year and it took a while for MHS to get going, a long run by Clark really opened them up. I haven't heard or seen much CF this year but defense was stout last year and didn't give up anything, all had to be earned. I expect the same tonight, this game will help me make an "argument" for who would beat who between last years MHS and this years HSHS. I will say in regards to scoring this year vs last years, the depth wasn't the same last year. The starters for HSHS played way more than this years team which is why I believe they scored more. If they starters this year played all game like last years do you think the scoring would be any different? Or was it because they played more "cupcakes" last year?
@Johnny"football" I also watched that CF/Manchester game except on YouTube. And you partially just helped my point. HS's schedule was weaker last year, so why would they need to play the starters for longer? I bet no one doubts there was much dropoff to their backups last year that it would threaten the outcome of any of those games, especially with running clocks.
Ummm... it was HS's power running game that took down Oscar Smith and Manchester this year. What do you mean, "I'd be shocked if this year's team can utilize a power running game against a good defense. " ? Are you saying Oscar Smith and Manchester don't have good defenses?
I agree with you, I'm not from the 804 but been here ever since I graduated from VCU. I took a job in Highland Springs and naturally people talked about the program. The JV kids who became 2015 state champs use to come into my job all the time selling those discount coupons and asked for support. I've been a supporter ever since. The way the coaching staff shapes those kids is inspiring and you want to see them succeed. As far as the fans, its always like that no matter where you go. My pops use to say there are 3 types of fans. 1. Crazies 2. Loyalist 3. Respectful..... Good post though, I felt that.

Do you realize how Oscar Smith got any of the yardage they got? I’ll give you a clue! They only got the yards because they committed the penalties. When they didn’t commit the penalties they couldn’t do squat!
Yes Highland Springs did score 67 points in four different games but they also scored those points using depth! And if you notice a couple of those teams are no longer on the schedules. This year the starting quarterback played one whole drive against Meadowbrook and zero drives against Atlee. Against Manchester three of the starting defenders only played offense in the first half and yes it showed in the second half when they played defense too. They were still fresh on the last play of the game and the quarterback was sacked.
You don’t win 37 in a row and 65 out of the last 68 but running the score up. Anybody can put up big numbers with the starters in in the fourth quarter against cupcakes. Maybe that lack of depth used last year cost them in the second half this year.
I wondered that too, it seemed like Waller never came out and the secondary played all 4 qtrs. I think this years team has more "potential" and the coaches may see them getting playing time more important than those 3 and 4 year starters playing all game. Its all about your team though, only the staff knows why they played more or less and what they need this year versus last year.
He keeps saying HSHS doesn’t have a power running game,but doesn’t realize,they run between the tackles ALL GAME in any big games. I’d love to know who he considers to have a “good defense”! No one has been close to OS since HSHS played them. Only Varina has been successful vs Manchester. I’m sorry they can’t play Mater Dei every game! Smh

The other touchdown the back up quarterback for highland springs had the ball slipped out of his hand on his own 7 yard line
Backup QB,Dent struggled late(pick 6). Jones was picked off twice as well(the last was with 2 min left deep in CF territory on a 4th down. The Springers D was way too much for CF’s offense
Class 6 has not been weak in the past as OS Ocean lakes and Westfield were all strong teams but last year they were down. As good as Manchester was last year I don't think they would have waltz through the playoffs like they did if those teams were not down..
Halftime the score was 13-7 HS
HS scored 1st 6-0 (extra pt missed). CF scored after an int deep in HS territory (thst took 7-6 lead.
HS put together a long drive and scored just before halftime (score 13-7)
HS had the ball qst in the 3rd qtr and drove the field basically running the ball taking a 20-7 lead. HS stopped CF again on a 3 & out, then HS marched down the field again and scored to make the score 27-7 about half way through the 3rd... From here, Coach J pulled the starters and decided to play the 2nd team.
The back up fumbled at th 7 yd line and Forge scored almost immediately! Score 27-14...After that, the 4th qtr had started. HS had stopped the Forge again, then HS's backup qb threw a pick 6 and suddenly they were back in business! HS 27 CF 20.
Then HS put the starting line up again and basically kept the ball away and out of CF's hands with about 4 minutes to play and ran the clock out. I think HS staff is trying hard to preserve our kids from injuries! It nearly cost us the game tonight.
We did have 5 turn overs too. Not pretty!
For the most part HS did shut them down. All 3 of their scores were set up by 2 ints and a fumble. All deep in HS territory.
As much praise that should be given to HS coaching staff for success I have to place critique when necessary. The score was 27 to 7 HS a little after the 4 quarter started and coach decided to take out starting qb and both starting rb.
Here goes Mr. Delusional again. First last year's team was chalk full of seniors at skill positions. This year team many skill position players are juniors. Last year team was powerful but schedule was not as hard as the one these juniors are playing and need I say most of the games on the road. You have a lot of doubts about HS team this year but all we keep doing is winning. I see you have even been spreading your nonsense in Class 6 with the Nova fans. We are the favorites to repeat as state champions despite all the adversity these kids have had to endure this year with playing in hostile environments and a tough schedule while Louisa is not a favorite to win the championship in their own class. Continue to hate because if you don't have haters than that means you aren't doing anything. I guess that's why nobody is on class 4 posts talking about your squad. I didn't have a problem with him pulling the starting qb out but I have a major problem with him throwing the ball from our 15 yard line while are up 27-7 and our defense is in full control. Smart coaching would suggest keep running the ball and put on 4th down and make them drive the length of field. After fumble he put dent back in and called another pass play from our 19 yard line instead of running the ball.
What I'm noticing as a pattern is very vanilla play calling in the first half I guess to see what the other coaches game plan is then HS opens up the playbook more in the 2nd half. This game should have ended in a blowout because Colonial Forge had all but given up when we decided to give them life by putting in the back up qb. I like dent as a backup but I think jv jb is better and they should have brought him up to be the backup.
@Thomasddev do you ever have anything positive to say? I come and congratulate HS and say I was wrong, something you're incapable of, and all you can do is come and attack. And then you attack your great coach for keeping a game too close. All it proves is you're a complete jerk of a fan.

On MaxPreps, Colonial Forge Highlights show their fumble recoveries and interceptions, 1 pick 6. Those fumbles were all brutal hits in HS backfield. Similar issues occurred vs Manchester. That's becoming a problem that could shorten their season in the playoffs.
The interceptions were all well-defended plays maybe even poorly thrown into tight coverage. Obviously the Springers played well enough to beat a very good team.
CF is going be tough to beat in the playoffs. The Class 6 South Regional is going to be very tough!!! Freedom, CF and Smith all could be favorites!!!

Manchester was the best team in the state last year IMO. This year they are not. They blew out every single opponent and broke the scoring record and had major power 5 players on their team. Why throw shade? You would not have destroyed them. That is a bizarre statement
The 2 picks thrown by the starting QB were both great plays by the CF safety. The last one was insignificant! There was one GIGANTIC hit,in the first half,on our 2nd string RB,was one of the hardest hits I’ve ever seen in high school. I still don’t know how he got up from that(he had to be helped off the turf,but walked off on his own)! #15 & #24 for CF were flat out bringing it. The turnovers DO concern me,but I know that defense can shut anyone down when they’re called on! In all reality...HS was 3+ touchdowns better than CF and I don’t see them beating OS! OSmith is still the best team HSHS has faced! Jmo
The difference between CF and Manchester games with HS in regards to fumbles was Manchester sacked the qb and stripped the ball one time the other two were just poor hand off execution. Now Colonial Forge fumbles came from hard hits except the one by the back up QB in the 4th. The CF game was on a way to being a full blowout early in the 4th quarter as we came out in the 3rd and ran the ball down their throats at will. Then the coach decided to pull the starting qb and running backs out. That's when things went wrong. Our defense played lights out as usual. You are right though the youngsters have to stop turning the ball over if they hope to be successful in the playoffs. Johnson is a great coach but it is time to stop with the 2 qb rotation. Jones is the clear number one.
Obviously you didn't read my post because I said HS 2015 team that won the first state championship would have destroyed them. As good as Manchester QB was last year he would have had problems throwing against Dortch and Wallace. IMO. Last year HS team would have beat them and it would have been a close good game, Manchester had some real dogs on that team last year. By the way Manchester should have broke scoring records last year because they were playing some weak comp. Even the teams HS played last year were that were considered weak like Lee Davis were still better than Hugeonot and Wythe.
The way things are setting up...HSHS will “probably” have to face Varina TWICE and Manchester again too. DRun will be the #2 or #3 seed. I’m not sure how things break down if Varina beats HSHS next Saturday,but I’m sure DRun can’t outpoint Manchester for the #1 seed. I don’t think DR’s schedule is strong enough to outpoint a 1 loss HS or 1 loss Varina either.
huguenot was a playoff team last year. Lee Davis was abysmal. Outside of Henrico and Varina HSHS schedule last year was very similar to Manchester’s. Last years Manchester’s team was the best team I have seen and MANY people would agree with that statement. I do think 2015 was HSHS best team and beat an absolutely loaded class 5 field before the decline of Bird and Hermitage. However I have not seen HS play this year in-person yet so maybe my opinion will change on the best HS team of all time
Deep Run is better than we think... I think. Agree still a cut below the big 3 but I am starting to think they can hang around for a half or so
It’s hard for me to judge them because of their unbelievably terrible schedule. They end the season next week with a very strong but D2 TJ. Them or Henrico may be the best team they have played all year and quite honestly that’s not saying much. By record the best team they have played so far is Douglas Freeman but honestly that’s not saying much either. Depending on who they face in the first round may depend on if they get out of the first round or not, because I really like Cloverhill. I do not feel like they are good enough to beat any of the big three. They remind me of Glen Allen last year.
