HSHS vs MBK has been a great series for the past few years. Any thought or predictions on this weeks machup.
HS looks poised to have a great season . QB is doing a fine job tossing the ball over 500 yds in 2 games, good balance and playing defense. If they can get the penalty bug straight..... look out!

Tough to tell

Although MBK is 0-2 right now, they easily could and should be 2-0 against Hermitage and Manchester. Clock management and a QB scamper of more than 40 yards with time running out is why they lost to Herm (and there's a question as to whether he fumbled before he got in), and not getting it in from inside the four on four plays against Manchester, with the last two from the one foot line, is the difference in the Manchester game. I don't know when I missed it, but apparently MBK has become Bird on offense. Not sure how effective that is for the type and number of athletes that MBK gets- but it is what it is. We'll see if they can pound the ball against HSHS. It's been a good game since the series began, and I don't expect this one to be any different. I hope they keep it up going forward- it's a natural rivalry that can build here.

Re: Tough to tell

It's funny you reference MBK becoming Bird on offense because at the Herm game, an LC Bird assistant was on hand and he referenced that same point.

Meadowbrook and Dale both are the best 0-2 teams out there and it's only a matter of time before they get that first win under their belt.

I think they should and will keep this series going, especially since it seems both will be Class 5 schools in the next cycle.

Re: Tough to tell

Yes I agree with you Mr MBK... I thought a first down at the end of the HERM game and it's over. Not sure of the thought process, considering they had found something in the HERM D and was running the ball very well. Also it needs to be pointed out that those HERM kids never quit. Even as MBK was taking a knee you could sense the HERM kids thought they still may have a chance. And wherever that Robinson (QB herm) ends up they will get a gem... the kid can play..

That's the thing with Hermitage

Whether they are getting it totally together on the field or not early on, they are always stinking with talent.

Re: Tough to tell

The MBK/HS rivalry is a good one! I can tell you that the folks over here in Eastern Henrico aren't going to take them lightly either! I honestly think the 2014 Springers team is a notch or 2 better than last years version. This is always a barn burner and I can't wait til Friday night!!! Thursday's jv might be interesting too. HS has a jv QB (9th grader) named Robert Johnson that is quite good! This bunch of youngsters can play!! The future is looking very good!!

Re: Tough to tell

In my opinion, strictly as a score watcher right now, Highland Springs if off to the most impressive start in the former Central Region.

Brooke Point hasn't been good lately, so that doesn't say much, but we know that the Springers had a running clock win. You can't ask for more than that.

Colonial Forge, on the other hand, has been quite a powerhouse lately so a 3 touchdown victory over the Eagles is impressive. So the though might be that the Forge is down this year, but they beat Briar Woods and we all know what Briar Woods has been the last few years. So I'd have to say I like Highland Springs a lot.

Meadowbrook, like you guys have already seen is the best 0-2 around right now, and I wouldn't want to play them after their last two weeks. They are going to be mad. Manchester and Hermitage are two of the best squads around right now and M'brook was pretty much even with them.

I'm going to pick this score:

Springers 33
Monarchs 20

I think Meadowbrook is good enough to pull the upset, but I feel like if both teams are on, that Highland Springs is a little better.
I also have a real good feeling about Highland Springs this year. They are going to have a season to remember.

Re: Tough to tell

I don't think anybody doubts that this will be about as physical as a game at this level can be. As a consequence, I think HS has a little more depth. Players are bound to get dinged. Maybe cramps slow a key player down and the replacement just can't hold his block. Maybe tempers flair, and the coach has to sit somebody down for a few key plays. And this factor certainly can go either way.

You know that the MBK coaching staff will use everything that they can think of, to keep from having to deal with a 0-3 situation. And this may be their un-doing. MBK wants to grind it out, pound, pound, pound. And they are good at this. But,I think that HS can gain yardage both in the air, and on the ground, and quickly. Therefore, HS can be up by more than a touchdown late, forcing MBK to try to score quick. I believe HS has a big play defense that will take advantage of this. Maybe a pick six. Maybe just a demoralizing stop on 4th down.

I think it simply comes down to this. If HS keeps there head in the game, it plays out something like I describe above.

But don't discount the possibility of MBK maintaining ball control, HS getting an I'll time penalty or two early, maybe a lost fumble or dropped pass, leaving MBK with a shot by the beginning of the forth quarter of staying in their run game and squeaking out a close win.

Also, HS has a pretty dominant RB/LB that hasn't played yet! He may get his chance to carry the rock this week!!
5'9" 205lb DJ Anderson (transfer from Godwin) combined with KC Hinton 5'10" 190lb. RB/LB . He will add another demension to the running game. Passing game is showing signs of being hard to stop!

Re: Tough to tell

Awful hard to stop a team with a versatile balanced attack. It takes an extraordinary defense, with a few special athletes to shut down an offense that has these characteristics. Most teams are stretched thin trying to run stop, and have an aggressive pass defense. And, is often is the case, the best players are playing both ways. You have seen it before, as the game wears on, the defensive players that are playing both ways, especially the DB's start to loose that 1/2 step. Then wham, big play. I expect to see just this at this game.

Re: JV HS vs MBK

HSHS wins 46-0. I thought our JV was pretty good, but they are damn good. QB Robert Johnson threw 4 td passes in the 1st half and lead 28-0. 2nd and 3rd strings played the entire 2nd half.... As I said, The future looks bright!

Re: JV HS vs MBK

Congrats to you. Sure makes you proud and optimistic when your JV's are playing at that level.

Saw the news on the unfortunate incident today. Do you care to clarify? I believe about 50% of what I see on TV news.

Re: JV HS vs MBK

I saw it on the news too. Some chatter on the stand, says it was 2 seperate incidents. One involve a kid with some sort of medical problem requiring an ambulance and at the same time there was a fricasin the gym's pep rally involving some knuckle heads. Who knows, kids these days! It seem whenever there's a large gathering of them and a disagreement if some sort arises, there has to be riot to cap it!
