I’ll just be honest I’m not sure if we can ever take the next step with him being our best player. Super streaky and the worst defensive guard in the conference.
There are a bunch of guards who never play, but he is the worse defensive guard?
Hyperbole, hopefully.

Anyways, yeah if he is the best player on the team we may not make the next step. At the same time, he isn't keeping MSU from landing more elite talent. So him being on the court either way is good by me.

In general, I am happy when 2nd team allSEC players who are sophomores choose to return.

The article above says he has scored the 4th most points in a combined freshman and sophomore seasons in SEC history.

That's some pretty damn impressive stuff from a private school kid who wouldn't be considered tall in Vietnam.

Also didn't realize he shot nearly 90% at the line.

Happy to have him back.

He’s the new Tolu.

And as unfortunate as this statement is, I think we’ve got to realize that if he was everything we wished he was, he wouldn’t be at State
Exactly. 4 and 5 year players dont leave sooner because they have a limitation or two, even the multi-year stars like Tolu.

After his junior year, Drew Timme from Gonzaga was already a 2x 2nd team All American and the conference POY. He returned because despite those accolades, he wasnt going to be drafted.
He then was conference POY again and a consensus 1st team All American as a senior...and wasnt drafted.
Gonzaga fans could have focused on what kept him from being an NBA draft pick and constantly complained about that, or they could have sat back and enjoyed watching a 2x conference POY and a 3x All American(1st or 2nd team) play for the team they cheer for.

Good lord, you people are unsatisfiable. I for one am glad one of the best shooters in the country and one of the most recognizable players in the SEC is back. Would you really rather he not be back and just take our chances with the next guy, whoever that may be?

Not his fault, but there are other guards in the SEC that can do exactly what he does and are about 6-7" taller.
I'm glad Mark Sears is finally gone from Alabama.
I hope Zakai Zeigler doesn't get a 5th year of eligibility at Tennessee.
Those guys are short, but do I care? Not even a little bit - they gave us fits so I want them gone.

That's how the rest of the SEC feels about Hubbard. We should be really glad he's coming back.

Glad to have him back. I just happened to get my season ticket renewal email a few minutes ago. Coincidence, capitalizing on the timing, or was it a marketing strategy? Regardless, glad to have him back for another season.

Would we really be bitching if Hubbard had same accolades and team accomplishments? Doubtful

One of the best individual performances I’ve seen at the hump was his game vs bama. Unfortunate loss, but Hub was lighting it up from everywhere. Anybody that doesn’t want him back is crazy. Yeah he can improve on defense, but the kid is a baller
The UK game in '24 is one of the best performances I've ever seen at the Hump*. The last minute of that one, I think we're down by 9 (?) and could not stop them from scoring, but he single-handledly not only kept us in it, but gave us the lead with 6 seconds left. Incredible game.

*Chris Abdul-Raouf notwithstanding.

I don’t think anyone doesn’t want him. I think people would like to see him be a little more consistent and win a big game. We’ve built our team around him the last two years, and he just hasn’t delivered like we thought he would. Yes he had a couple great games but we lost and there are plenty of games he stunk it up missing shot after shot. I’m glad he’s back, but if you’re gonna build a team around him then the expectation is higher.

He’s one of the best shooters in the country? Wanna show me those stats?

Come on, man. Out of 19,000 basketball players in the country in 2025, he ranked:

Scoring - 34th
3PT Made - 21st
3PT Attempts - 5th
FG Attempts - 37th

You will point out that his shooting % was down, which it definitely was. He was 17th in 3PTs in 2024 as a freshman, and the '25 stats are not as good. But everyone who watched this team knows that once Kanye Clary crapped out, Hubb was forced into duty as PG, which is not his natural position. He was under constant pressure to bring the ball up, distribute, AND kept having to lead the team in scoring. He didn't have much help in a lot of these games.

Prior to this past season, Andy Katz considered him one of the best shooters in the country:

14. Josh Hubbard, Mississippi State

Guard Josh Hubbard made waves as a freshman, shooting 35.5% from three-point range and averaging 17.1 points per game. His standout performance earned him a spot on the All-SEC Second Team, alongside Erick Dampier, as the only Mississippi State freshman to achieve this honor.

Additionally, Hubbard became the first true freshman to claim the Bailey Howell Trophy and set a new scoring record for Mississippi State freshman with 598 points in his rookie season. As he gears up for his sophomore season, Josh Hubbard is a player to keep a close eye on.

Hopefully we'll get that guy back this year.

We tried to not make him the only player we could count on and they busted. Very unfortunate, but the intention was not for him to be the only guy. We paid a lot of money for 3 sh*t heads that didn’t play well or literally quit. That is on Jans, but also just how it goes in the portal era.
