Hubbard's slump

This situation seems to have started at the Central Michigan game in Jackson.
Even my wife commented during that game that Josh did not seem like himself.
Since that game, Josh has been in a shooting slump:

It's a difficult situation Jans has with this, as Josh was clutch most of last season. And with the Clary situation (whatever that is), we have little options to run the PG position instead of a freshman.
From my perspective, it seems Josh is forcing shots now. Sure, defenses are focused on him, but many of his shots last night were not ideal.

I've been saying he has poor shot selection, sometimes out of necessity. When he elevates for a shot, he is often floating left or right, which makes accuracy difficult. A good shot has many parts and it starts with getting your feet under you and elevating vertically. Hubbard has better performance when he plays the 2 position and we run set plays for him so he can get a set shot. I noticed two games ago we ran him on a double screen and he had a wide open shot at the top and he rushed it, his feet flew to the side and he missed. It's something he needs to get a handle on.

he had several wide *** open 3s last night. good shots --he missed. when we playing road games in SEC -when HUB plays bad --we won't win. just a fact. Hub also can't guard 6'5" guards.. if he isn't scoring then the points he is giving up beats us. 5'9" can't guard other guards who are over 6 feet tall.

It’s not just his shooting, though. When he doesn’t have the ball, he’s literally just standing around. This allows his defender to sag into the paint and become an extra lane defender. Hubbard isn’t moving, using screens, etc to get open so his defender doesn’t have to chase him.

It’s also his defense. Last night, he was standing flat-footed on defense and letting Auburn’s PG have his way with him consistently.

Something’s off and he needs to fix it soon!

this is the correct answer. he's not a PG, but is being asked to be one. you get someone out of their comfort zone in BB, and you can wreck their confidence and they'll start pressing.

This is basically it. If he's our primary ball handler, he's not going to be the same offensive weapon for us as he is when we can get him off the ball some. He's forcing stuff because he still feels like he needs to be the man. The good news is he is not our only scoring option, and we don't need him to force things. The bad news is we do need him to score some and to hit open 3's when he gets them, and that's going to be a hard balance for him to figure out. He's going to disappear some games and make mistakes forcing things some games.

I think Hub is in his own head now. He's missing a lot of shots because they aren't good shots, but it's impacting him when he does get good shots.
Only other thing that would cause this would be dead legs (we've played on some short turn arounds, but it's pretty early in the season so that really shouldn't be it) and a minor injury, which he doesn't seem to have.

Yeah, I’ve felt for a few weeks now like Josh is playing as if 15-20 pts is required from him in order for State to win. He is forcing a lot of contested to downright bad shots, and I feel bad for him because I know that no one is more frustrated than him, but he’s got to figure out how to better help the team even it that means being a decoy.

2/12 shooting is bad enough, but 2/12 with zero assists can’t happen

And with last night being the exception, I think we've got guys capable and willing to do that. I guess what I don't know is whether Hubbard's going to accept that. He can still be of value on the court if he's constantly drawing double teams, but he's got to be willing to make the pass rather than jacking up long range, contested shots

The problem with that is that Hubbard isn't moving without the ball. Hard to run plays/screens for a guy that's just standing there watching the game.
