but he passes the baserunner that was in front of him and is called out. He gets credit only for an RBI single. That put the Emeralds up 1-0 early in the game. I have seen a hitter pass the baserunner in front of him but never on a home run when there is no hurry to get around the bases.

That's a really dumb play; but if you're the coach (manager), you've gotta love the hustle.

What a boneheaded play. That should NEVER happen in a professional baseball game. Either way, hopefully he keeps crushing the ball.

I've seen it with an in the park homer.

the only thing i can think of

was that it was barely over the wall and a baserunner on first was waiting to tag up/run. maybe it looked like it was going to hit the wall or something?? and renfroe passed him? **** i dont know.

Remember,

A swinging strike 3 has to be caught, because "it's the catcher that really makes the out." Baseball rules all make perfect sense**

What if the runner in front missed a base and had yet to tag by the time Renfroe came around? Or Renfroe just had his head in the dirt and wasn't paying attention.

I checked the local paper (dailyemerald.com) and it only says he had the games first rbi on "a single to left that scored the runner all the way from 1st base" No mention of a hr so writer either wrote the article from a box score or didn't think it was that noteworthy.

To score, RUNNER must touch home plate AFTER touching (in succession) 1st,...

2nd, and 3rd base.

Also, the rules state that if batter hits a home run, touches 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but misses home plate and then enters the dugout, he is called out. (And, obviously, he did not score a run.) I've seen this happen in high school and this is why you see the home plate umpire wait around to make sure that a player touches home plate after hitting (what should be) a walk-off homer.

"When I hit the ball, I thought it was a no-doubter, but when [Torres] saw the trajectory, he started sprinting back to first base," Renfroe said. "I was just trying to get a double out of it and I was running hard and I had too much speed built up.
"Suddenly, I thought, 'Holy [cow], where's Torres?' I saw that I'd gone by him and I said, 'Hurry up, get in front of me real fast,' but it was too late. It kind of [stinks], but it happened."

If I remember correctly moreland did the same thing when he was here. I believe it was on a grand slam and he passed easley on the base paths. Not sure if the details are correct but I wanna say that's how it went.

You sir are correct, so its an MSU tradition of sorts I guess. Can't remember how many were on base but Moreland definitely did it. And if Renfroe was going to do that I'm glad he did it AFTER his playing days with MSU were over. If that had happened in the CWS and somehow cost us a game I still wouldn't be over it.

as someone that spent 3 years in eugene and went to some emeralds' games, this kinda **** wouldn't surprise me. some of the worst baseball i've ever seen played was on that field. literally bad news bears stuff. msu freshmen had more baseball awareness than most of these guys in rookie ball. good thing they had cheap tickets and even cheaper beer.

Eh, under the circumstances it isn't that boneheaded....

What a boneheaded play. That should NEVER happen in a professional baseball game. Either way, hopefully he keeps crushing the ball.

It wasn't like he was in his home run trot, wasn't paying attention and loped past someone. It was a line drive screamer that neither player was able to read very well. Looks like this was a team effort to me. One guy wanted to at least get two bases and the other didn't want to get doubled up. It sounds to me like the guy on first has some culpability. It was obviously a deeply hit ball and he should have made sure it was caught before sprinting back to first. Then where was the first base coach? He is supposed to be the one watching where the ball goes and directing traffic over there. Not to mention a line drive HR is hard to read. I say cut him some slack.

Rules are rules but it is also kind of a stupid rule. Shouldn't even have to run the bases on a HR or at the very least just touch home in the right order. Why should it matter who passed who on a dead ball?

It's an awarded base scenario... Just like a ground rule double or a balk. In any of those instances, it wouldn't make sense for the runner to just walk to whatever base he is awarded to because he can advance beyond his awarded base if the ball is live (at his own peril).

If the runner already on base misses a bag and an appeal is made, he'd be out and the run wouldn't count.
