I heard last night that it is usually worse when the west coast of FL is hit than the east because the west side is very shallow far out into the gulf. The east drops deep not far off the coast. Deep water helps absorb the power of the hurricane and shallow water intensifies it.

Sea levels naturally rise and fall over the course of thousands of years (sometimes more quickly) and the Fl coastline has been drastically wider.
This is true. I have been scalloping at Ozello and over a mile out and waded around knee deep. Didn't even need a snorkel to haul them in. Water was crystal clear and you just reached down and picked them up.

That baseball helmet isn't going to do **** when a piece of lumber comes barreling down the road. There is a time for hero reporting which he has done many times, but this is above what any of their vet reporters have ever experienced.

I really don't want to see a guy get impaled by a stop sign. The helmets are a cute touch but it's hysterical to think that does anything with something of weight hitting you over a 100 mph.

I was in Destin when Sally came thru 2 years ago as a Cat 1. That was scary enough to watch and feel what 80-100 mph is. I can't imagine what this thing is doing.

We’re just outside Savannah, too far north for the serious stuff, but still supposed to get 4-5 inches of rain between Thursday night and Friday night, with winds of 50 mph. Just hoping for no loss of power.

As much as disgusting partisans are hoping this goes bad, it seems the Florida has been fully prepared to save lives and help. This is how you organize government.
Knock of the politics please. This subject is too serious to be getting political digs in.
Appreciate the useful links, Brassow. Not sure your first comment is needed though. There's no one hoping "this goes bad" and I'm not sure who you're even referring to. I was hoping by page 4 information could be provided without propping up one side and tearing down the other.

I'm glad Florida seems to be prepared for this. They should be. It's Florida and it's hurricane season. They've had decades of experience unfortunately. If all goes as best as we hope for, DeSantis and the people who continue to help should be applauded. We're also at the beginning of this, so maybe let's chill with the idol worship until this thing is over? There will still be a massive cleanup and many displaced. We all hope this won't be as bad as it seems and the loss of life is minimal.

Fox News reporting hundreds dead in Lee County which is Ft. Myers area.
My first cousin lives in Ft Meyers near the water. We have not been able to get in touch with her or her sons. I am sure she is safe because she has been through so many of these in the past but until we get word they are we are concerned.

Prayers to all who got hit so hard. I am thankful it did not come here as forecast but one can not help but feel sadness knowing so many lives of fellow Floridians had their world crushed in a matter of hours. May God bring comfort.

Little nauseous RN. Just spoke to one of my rep buddies that has family in Sarasota. Said the family's house was fine and they're fine but the guy next door's house was pushed up from underneath about 10 ft in the air by the storm surge and the guy was outside on his balcony so it threw him in the air then he died smacking back into a pylon. Said it's on video, too. Ugh.

Our villa style condo in Punta Gorda survived with only minor damage. We lost some ridge caps, had a few down trees, lost a storage shed and that was about it. It's on a cannel and if the storm surge had been what had been predicted we would have been under water but because the storm hit dead on, the eye wall had a north/south rotation and didn't bring in much water into Charlotte Harbor (7 feet), unlike Fort Myers, 30 miles south where the eye wall had more of a west/east direction, it flooded Fort Myers and just about wiped out Sanibel Island. Very sad situation there.

A lot of lives and dreams shattered in this video. Multiply that by hundreds...years of recovery ahead. Jesus.

Ian going to hit SC as a Cat 1 tomorrow....anyone thinking of a beach vaca right now needs to stay home and let the locals take care of their issues.

You in Pasco county Sawnee? All cell phone service is out in Lee county and they’re trying to bring in mobile cell phone towers
No I am North of Pasco. The picture is Pine Island North of Hernando Beach and Bayport. I have a cousin in Ft Meyers and she and the family are in a shelter. Her house is probably a total loss. I think her car got washed away too. This according to another cousin who talked with her until the phone went dead.

In the Governors press confernce they mentioned bringing in mobile cell towers for Lee. Flooding is some of the worst I have seen. Poor ole Sanibel and Captiva Island, I doubt they will ever be the same and it is going to take time to rebuild that bridge over to the islands.
