Been wondering this since about mid season last year. Do you think we have a clause in his contract where he cant leave us for an SECW team? I think LSU would be our biggest immediate threat if we have success under Mullen.

That was the consensus of the 5 Ole Miss fans I was with. I am not saying LSU would be after him but they expect him to try and make a move.

let's let the season play out first. The demise of Miles is still a little premature. But there is no doubt that any big school looking for a coach is going to give Mullen a look- just something we have to deal with when we finally have a coach thats worth a **** again.

We lose Mullen? Then we might be smart to hire Diaz or Hudspeth and keep things rolling just the way they are. These guys would make very few changes in how the program is currently run- which is working very well.

The biggest problem? Replacing Balis, who is obviously one of the best strength coaches in the country. I hope we have someone working under him, learning his system and programs. This is an utmost area of importance to replace should Mullen leave. I'm hoping Stricklin has a plan in place.

Doesn't LSU at least make a play for little Nicky Satan first? Doubt he'll bite, but he's done strange things before. LSU would find the cash if that was the only hurdle.

Also, I think their initial list starts with more established and successful coaches. Miles was kind of a flyer and their not very happy with that, so I think they start out looking at people like Saban, Mack Brown, Stoops, maybe Pete Carroll once he's goine 4-12 in the NFL again....blockbuster guys. I doubt anyone I just listed would bite, but I think Mullen may be around #10 on their list. It's quite possible they make it that far down the list however.

I know I would hate to have to play a team as athletic as LSU with Mullen at the helm. That's scary just thinking about it.

that the LSU game will be the most important game of Dan Mullen's career. He gets a 4 hour interview in front of the LSU AD and 90000 LSU fans...

Bronze statues representing each coach who has won the MNC at bama. One was erected before the coach depicted retired. I'll let you guess which one. There is no way in hell he returns to red stick.

if Mullen will indeed take that job. It's almost a no-brainer and you almost have to take it, but I don't think it's 100% he would accept it.

Mullen and anybody else should Miles be fired, will seriously take into account the Saban factor of the LSU job. You not only have to win at LSU, but you have to beat Nick Saban or you will lose your job. That is going to weed out some candidates. Coaches are going to see Miles going 8-5, 9-4, and then at least 8 wins this season and should he be fired, become leary of this job. It's no secret how tough the SEC West is these days, and its going to be tough sledding for everybody.

There's a reason Auburn had to hire Gene Chizik and Tennessee had to hire Derek Dooley. Coaching longevity at schools not named Fla or Alabama is risky at best. Unrealistic expectations tend to scare some people away

administration knows it too and are working on a plan to do everything they can to keep Mullen. I have no idea on the details but I do know for sure they are already working on it. Mullen is different, it wouldn't surprise me to see him stay longer than most of us think if we can be competitve on money for he and his staff.

some games. We CAN beat that team. We could also lose by 21 points if they have 4-5 big plays. Les has talent and has continued to recruit very well. However, his teams are erratic and have won sometimes simply because of talent and occasionally luck. 4-5 losses for LSU is a real possibility.

but I'd like to think he would not leave us for another program in our division which he has no ties to. I can see why he would bolt for Florida, but LSU?

We are going to lose Mullen sooner or later. Let's just hope the program is real successful by then and the momentum rolls on.

Let's go ahead and put that one to rest. Jimbo ain't leaving FSU to go to LSU unless he gets fired from FSU. And if he gets fired from FSU, then LSU won't be offering him the job anyway.

I don't think Mullen is going to bail until his work is done hear. We may have to find a way to pony up a little more than we are now, but if he does leave I agree 100% to hire from within and I'd go with Coach Hud.

I always thought Malzahn would be a pretty good replacement.
he is an offensive genius. Les Miles could save his job today and make LSU a NC contender for the next 10 years if hefired Crowten today and could somehow convince Malzahn to come over as his new OC.

While I used to think I would love Malzahn as a replacement, I'm starting to think that promoting from within would be a better option. Now if Mullen left andtook his whole damn staff with him...we may be screwed.

Would it be absolutely off the wall to think that Dan Mullen might want to stay in Starkville? I think it's possible....he's already been to the top of the mountain, twice....mabee he wants to be THE MAN....getting paid 2-3 million a year and job security, that's what we have....not to mention, people are breathing down his back....here he gets to call all the shots......mabee he likes the small town, and everyone has to factor in, the wife.....mabee she loves it here, who knows.....everyone remember when stansbury was a hot canidate?....he and his family love it here....not everyone gets caught up in the chase...look at peterson at boise, the virginia tech coach, ect.....</p>

I am not saying they will go after him all I was saying was that he is a option. You may be right he might want to stay in the ACC after all they are the premier college football conference.

told me that there was some language in the clause about his "automatic contract renewal" that can get them out of it fairly cheaply. I think his contract was said to automatically renew for an additional year for each 9 win season (maybe 8). However, it was actually only automatic on his part and only if the school wanted to renew it. Anyway, the word in Baton Rouge is that they have not renewed it the past two years, so instead of a $14M buyout, it's more like $5M-$7M. Rumor is that there are several of their "cigar boys" ready to pony up the buyout if things don't go well this year.

I just don't know how involved Mullen has gotten him in the program. Regardless, if Mullen ever leaves I agree that I would prefer a smooth transition like hiring from within. However, hiring unproven coaches is risky as hell..we all saw that in the Crxxms experiment.

It would be 7.5 mil if they have not renewed it...and his salary has not changed since the 2008 season.
The language in the contract states (as can be read here on pg.7 from his Renewal post-NC win where he added that he must be the highest paid SEC coach by $1,000)
http://i.usatoday.net/spo...tracts/pdf/miles_lsu.pdf

3. In exercising the discretion granted in the employment agreement and amendments as to whether to grant a one-year term extension, the Chancellor will be guided by the following:

A. Winning eight or more games in a season presumptively will be the basis for a one-year term extension.

B. A decision by the Chancellor not to grant a one-year extension for any reason must be concurred in by the President of the LSU System.

file:///C:/Users/mboone/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot.png*edit* One other note...the time period allowed to pay it off is DOUBLE the length of the remaining contract..so if he has two years left at 7.5mil they have 4 years to pay it, if it is 3 years left (till 2013) it is 11.75 over 6 years, and if it if 4 years it is the full 15mil over 8 years.

1. A six or even seven game winning season by Mullen is not going to get him hired for megabucks by LSU, even if they change coaches.

2. Mullen will get a very substantial raise at MSU if he wins six or seven games.

3. I really think that the Mullens like it in Starkville and will be in no rush to leave. Of couirse he will not stay forever but you guys are getting antsy prematurely.

It'd be hard for even LSU to outbid them. And he'd stay at FSU anyway for the same reason Bobby Bowden took FSU to the ACC instead of the SEC back in 1990. He knows he can win a hell of a lot more games in the ACC than he could in the SEC.

Supposedly it's 9 wins this season or 8 and a win over Saban...I think they win 8...and if he beats Saban I think he keeps his job no matter what

there is no playoff system, therefore no REAL championship as in ever other sport.
