but I’ve been watching “The Sopranos“ over the last few weeks. i finished it today. I thought it was a fantastic series……it would suck you into sympathizing with Tony or one of the other guys, and then remind you, in your face style, of what they really were. One of the best TV things I’ve ever seen….but that ending? Yeah, I’ve read all the stuff post ending…high minded critic crap if you ask me. It was left wide open for a sequel…which never happened.

Everyone hoped there would be a movie or a spinoff to come from that but deep down I think we all know they were probably all killed after the screen went black with all those former adversaries in the restaurant.

When I first watched, I struggled with Season 1 but thought it got better and better. With a rewatch, I didn’t have the same problem with Season 1 but only got a few episodes in. Going to try to get my wife to watch because she’s never seen it

I also know the psychiatry consultant for the show

Great show, and I did the same with Breaking Bad. People told me for years that I had to watch it, but I couldn’t understand how I’d ever care about a small time meth dealer.

Now it’s a top 5 all time show for me

Watch the movie "The Many Saints of Newark" to get a little back story of young Tony Soprano, and kinda his introduction to the Mafia.

Watching it now with my wife for about the 4th time. First for her. Every time I watch, I see something new. So many levels, and so funny. There are so many subtle jokes I never noticed before. The more I have watched, I have realized what a complete POS Tony is. A great anti-hero but a total self absorbed POS.

Adding: There is some serious terrible acting by some of the peripheral characters, and some amazing acting by Gandolfini, Michael Imperioli, and Edie Falco especially. And the guy who plays Johnny Sac, whatever his name is. He's about the best on screen cigarette smoker I've ever seen.

This movie ran as hot and cold as any movie I've ever seen. It was a 9/10 in some stretches, a 3/10 in others.
Overall, worth a watch for a Sopranos fan though I'd say.

I tried Breaking Bad. I made it about halfway through season 2. Just seemed like the same thing happening over and over with different characters in different settings. Now Better Call Saul is top 10 all time for me for sure.

I watched the Sopranos maybe last year. It was very good, definitely deserves the acclaim it’s gotten.
I had heard before someone say they rewatched it and fast forwarded through all the scenes with the psychiatrist and it was twice as good. That’s not what I did but they may be on to something.

I don’t think I have ever seen this take so bravo. Most people that get to season 2 for BB are hooked and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone that likes Saul but not BB. BB is probably my favorite drama start to finish.

Let me tell ya something, I have a semester and a half of college so I understand Freud, I understand "therapy" as a "concept" but in my world, it does not go down, could I be happier? Yeah, who couldn't?

I'm sure it's just that I got tired of it at the time. I wouldn't be against trying again.

The loose end that i was was tied up was Dr Melhi’s rapist getting away scot-free. I always wanted Tony to find out.

I watched the whole thing. It was a little depressing. Bryan Cranston has such a wide range of acting. He played on King of Queens as the neighbor. Funny character. He played the dentist on Seinfeld. Dad on Malcom in the middle. He also played a judge on Your Honor.

I figure it was just Tony. The mob usually left the wife and kids alone.

But it was more than just the Mob in there.
I listened to one of the writers and he said originally in the restaurant tony does get shot by the guy in the Member Only jacket. That guy was suppose to look like his captain I can't remember his name that hung himself because Tony would not let him move to Florida.

This is what I tell everyone. The ending wasn’t built for streaming. Let me explain. If you watched that show for years, there was a massive buildup to final episode. It looks like Tony “wins” and you’re watching the clock as you know it’s about to end. Pressure is building as you’re waiting on the “big thing”. The scene is being shot in this chaotic varying POV that builds the pressure more. Don’t stop believing is reaching its crescendo. Then boom. Fade to black. In real time you panic. Did my cable cut off? Wtf just happened? You run to HBO’s website (early days of the internet) and it’s crashed. Initially I thought it was bs. But as it sits and marinates its genius. You watched Tony get wacked from his POV. You caught yourself cheering for a maniacal pos for several seasons and he finally gets his in an artistic way you never saw coming. I think it’s the best show ending of any of the great shows like GOT, The Wire, Breaking Bad. Most iconic shows either totally 17 it up vs how great the series was or at best soft landing like The Wire. Sopranos went big risk and the fact that it’s still talked about ad nauseam today speaks volumes.

Members Only was an episode where Eugene hung himself because he was trapped in the mafia by both the family and the FBI. There was no way out. The character who had on the members only jacket last name was Leotardo in tte credits. The homage to “you can’t get out” plus sharing a name with Phil Leotardo who Tony wacked out is a big clue. Further, when Tony and Bobby were on the lake discussing killing, they talk about how you probably don’t even see it coming foreshadowing Tony’s death. The guy walking in the bathroom in the final scene is a clear nod to the godfather.

You touch on part of what I think is great about the show. There's some tremendous acting talent in this, but there's also a lot of authentic jersey tough guys too. Silvio is cartoonish, but in a great way. Paulie was very good, but he was essentially playing himself. Chianise, who played Uncle Junior, was a scene stealer. And every year they brought in someone new, whether it was Annabella Sciorra, Robert Loggia, Juliana Margulies, Steve Buscemi, hell, even Franki Valli.

The writing is what made it great though. The dream sequences in the episode where they whack Big Pu55y and tie all of that back to a Billy Big Mouth Bass toy that Tony's kids get him for Christmas is some of the best writing in TV history.
