Saw on the local news a minute ago it’s still gridlocked and saying if you are traveling that way turn around.

MDOT and the National Guard have started rescuing stranded motorists. Even Desoto and Tate County road departments are assisting now.

It’s a total mess.

MDOT made zero effort to clear the interstates on Sunday when they could have had the opportunity. Now everything is a 2 inch sheet of ice that is impossible to plow. In fact if you try to plow it, it just makes it worse.

The last few years is littered with continual reminders that you better be prepared to take care of yourself at all times. Depending too heavily on government services or directives can cost you your life.

I really feel for the folks stuck out there freezing their asses off.

Why are people going through there to begin with? I know this is America and all, and you can do whatever you want to do, but I don't understand why m17ers are out there. Just like those clowns heading down the roads in all those tornado videos. Are you that far in your own world?

I-55 is one of the most vital north south trucking routes in the country and it’s been 4 days since the weather cleared up. It’s reasonable to think that an interstate of all things should be clear by now.

Trucking is one thing, what about all these stranded motorists? And I also have to think that MDOT had a good reason for not plowing. I'm not obviously there but possible that they tried and couldn't? It's not like they are completely quiet on it, they are actively telling people to avoid it.

It's a shlt situation so I get that people are beyond frustrated but the shutdowns on that map are the direct areas where the ice storm was the worst.

It won't happen because Tate is one of Trump's boys but I don't think it would be unreasonable for the DOT to have a little "prayer meeting" with MDOT and Tate about this .

?

I'm not trying to be argumentative here but TateR has actually been pretty good during his tenure about these sort of things, which is why I believe there must be other reasons.

And what exactly is DOT gonna do? Have a press conference?

you also have a lot of parents trying to get their kids out of Oxford. That’s not a joke.

So when you say stranded, do you mean that the vehicles have no traction and they have skidded off the asphalt?

Just saw on Fox Weather ... I-22 is stopped at Byhalia, MS, and it looks like just sitting still for miles. Mostly 18-wheelers. Can't tell if there's a wreck or what's caused the stoppage (other than ice all over the road). Doesn't look like road clearing of the snow/ice has been done at all.

If I had a child in Oxford with no vehicle I’d be busting my assto come get them.
Same….and I wasn’t mocking. There are some with vehicles too who may not be skilled enough to navigate their way out of town.

May be difficult for some folks to comprehend, but many people don't have the ability to just stay home. They have to get to work or they don't get paid.

I don't understand why they don't close the off ramps, they do it all the time up North. Basically if you get off for service you can't get back on.

If I had a child in Oxford with no car right now it would be because I had been in a coma the last two weeks and couln't go and get them BEFORE THE 17ing STORM HIT ! I don't know how much more warning we could have been given. I hope all those kids are ok but the fact is a lot of parents let them down by not having them at home when the storm hit in the first place. Excuse the rant but it just pisses me off .

A family friend drove up to Ole Miss yesterday, via the back roads, to pick up her daughter. It took almost half a day but she did it. I'm guessing it helps if you're coming from southern Miss/La.

I'm shocked out little is being done to clear the roads. This seems like a real cluster-17 for Tater.

Here's a screen shot of a traffic cam I just took of I-22 near Byhalia. Those semis are not moving.

Hmmm, look at all of those green roads in and around Memphis and then look South. Somebody from down South needs to call somebody up North and find out how that works.....................

Look at traffic flow on Google Maps. Only interstates in the country, outside of major cities, with long red and yellow sections.

Absurd for miles of our interstates to be in this condition 72 hours after the precipitation ended

Imagine how long it'll take to get power back in the worst areas when the roads are impassable for workers. The Canadian guys down here helping must find our winter prep laughable.

MS needs its version of the Cajun Navy - just outfitted with propane tanks and torches. That'll get it cleared up.

It’s not that simple. There are students at every university who are plane rides away from home. They didn’t just hop in the 4-Runner and drive up from Madison. And as for Ole Miss itself… last week they cancelled class for Monday. Then Sunday they cancelled for Tuesday. And then on Tuesday they cancelled the rest of the week.

So the university was telling kids, in essence, you’ve got a 3 day weekend but be here Tuesday because we’re business as usual.

Then by daybreak Sunday it was way too late for the majority of them to get out.

There is a bonafide fiasco happening on that campus right now.

Is it my imagination or do weather events always seem to run up the NW edge of the Natchez Trace?

I talked to two of the CN guys yesterday in a staging area for the railroad. They were texting pictures home because they’d’ never seen ice do so much damage.

That was the conundrum my nephews were in. My sister in law suggested they come up here and come home but they didn’t want to potentially get stuck up here and Oxford not get anything and the university say “too bad”. Fortunately by some miracle one of them never lost power and the other along with his wife and kid went east to Alabama to stay with his wife’s family because they couldn’t come this way.

Memphis got the same amount that Desoto county did. It was all sleet.
From that map it seems the gridlock is in Panola up through Lafayette/Marshall. That's the ice.

Look at the picture, the yellow and red lines literally stop at or just past the MS -TN state line

View attachment 1167756
Are we not looking at the same map? Yellow leads into red (where the worst of the ice is). Makes sense. Hard to plow ice.

I get it, people want answers and want to blame someone. But there's no good ones here, situation just sucks.
