I admit ignorance about recruiting; still I don't understand

that most applies.

"If a walk-on athlete pays his own way entirely and receives no institutional aid, it would not matter if he is deemed 'recruited' or 'not recruited. This individual would have no impact on UA's scholarship numbers."

Most of that article deals with walkons getting aid.

"My question is this... What about last year's gray shirts? Don't they count toward this year's 25?"

If you start the fall with 25, and one or two of those players -flunk out / miss their mom / get arrested / whatever- during the fall, you can use that scholarship for someone currently "greyshirting" or even some walk-on, if you want. Example: OM had some LB leave in the fall, so his scholarship was given to a guy who we greyshirted.

If a school has absolutely no attrition, then you're right, it could really catch up with you. I think a certain amount of attrition is expected at every school, however.

If a player has been "on campus" for 18 months, he can sign a scholarship and NOT be counted against that year's 25. He will always be counted against the 85 maximum scholarships, but if he has been on campus for 18 months, he will never count against a particular class.

So, if you have a grey shirt that has means, doesn't seem ready to contribute, etc., you can ask him to go 12 more months and then give him a scholarship freed up by a player that flunks out, left the program, etc.

No seriously I am not privy to what Sterling and Nutt agreed on or what conditions were established before he signed. He ended up being a full qualifier but still went to Hargrave. He has now returned to Oxford and walked on this Spring an will be on the team Spring practice.

Same as this year. All this is fun, but nobody knows what conditions were set or agreements met. It is no secret (or it at least should be obvious) that Nutt knows that currying favor with Hargrave and JUCOs is a good idea in MS for obvious reasons. Hence the oversign/placement "plan."

walk on at whatever school and even get nonathletic financial aid and still not count against your 25 signees for the year. They will however count towards your 85 total.
