I can't believe there isn't more discussion about Carroll.

I thought he would never leave SC. One of the Top 3 college coaches of the decade just jumped ship in his prime...for the Seahawks (I bet Chuck and Doug will be intolerable once this is finalized). I am shocked. He just seemed like a college guy. Why couldn't he do this right after their bowl game so Mullen could have time to get in and steal some recruits?

Who are they really going to go after?

Sarkisian?
Riley?
Petersen?
Patterson?
NFL Coach?

before all the NCAA mess totally hits the fan out there. If sanctions didn't look inevitable I don't know that he would be leaving for a pro job.

they go after Del Rio, at least that is the name i've seen the most. And there is a lot of chatter about it here in Jacksonville. Plus, he'll be able to meet the team out in LA once they move.

Carroll put the screws to USC. Leaving this late, then Riley looking to be out of the picture. This has got to screw their in coming class doesn't it?

I also think he sees the writting on the wall with the NCAA about to possibly come down on them.

Riley and Sarkisian have already said no.

Any coach coming in will want to be fully briefed on the situation, so I imagine it to be someone no one is thinking that they'll hire.

Herm Edwards.

I have a feeling he thinks the NCAA hammer is about to drop and is simply getting out of Rome before it burns to the ground (pun intended). If top level coaches keep turning that job down, or signing extensions where they are, like Sarkisian and Riley are rumored to have done, I think that will give some credence to the idea that those in the coaching circle know it's about to get bad out there.

If you remember, Miami couldn't get a "name" coach with head coaching experience to take the job after Erickson left, for Seattle coincidentally, because everyone knew what was about to happen. Butch Davis wasn't a big hire at the time as his only prior HC experience was at the high school level. That hiring obviously paid off, though.

i figure USC has the money to go after him. Maybe a Scientologist doesn't want to have to deal with possible sanctions though.

seriously, i can see carroll leaving, if only because he was in the NFL before he went to USC. in fact, his career record with the patriots was 27-21, so he wasn't really a colossal failure there (though he did inherit parcells's super bowl patriot team). he did seem like he had embraced the college game, so it's a surprise that he's bolting.

the cash will be better in the nfl. i wonder if the away-from-the-field aspects of being a coach are more manageable in the NFL than college. there's no recruiting and no NCAA. there's no pressure to win EVERY game, because there is a playoff system. i don't know what the offseason is like, but without recruiting, surely it's more tolerable. i wonder if any of those things factored into the decision.

whenever a coach makes a move like this, though, i always think of rick pitino. after pitino failed with the celtics, i remember him saying UK was camelot and he was king arthur. but he didn't realize what he had until he left it. and he could never get it back. or something like that.

he's a USC guy too, and with Bud Adams making him play Vince Young, there's a possible breach in his contract since he is supposed to have complete control over who plays.

the Seahawks are going to give him a lot of power-HC and some other position like President I think-, and I really think that's why he is bolting. And maybe the NCAA sanctions, but I can't imagine that something like that would keep USC down very long.

I think they hire Herm Edwards. I don't know how that's going to work out, though.
