Yet....
Personally with all the open vacancies we should wait until next year. Its now year by year with the portal anyway.

Yeah, I am guessing they’d repeat the Muschamp situation trying to hire someone this year. However, if you’re Donati you quietly ask and make Franklin and/or Kelly tell you no. If you get a no, especially from Franklin then waiting is absolutely the way to go. I got no thought Beamer figures this out but we don’t need another coach who should not be a hc. And that likely happens without one of those two

We do NOT want Kelly. He stunk at ND and blamed the players for his lack of coaching ability.

There were a lot of internal problems as well. Kelly fired a lot of long time staffers. He was rumored to not work very hard. The constantly attached and belittled people. Basically everyone hated him....and the team will likely go 7-5.

What are you talking about? He had one awful season there. He made the playoffs 2x and played for another natty. Yes they got whooped, plenty of teams have in said games. But that was hardly an awful tenure.

The biggest reason not to want him is it may not be a good idea to hire another coach his age. Otherwise he’s won and done very well everywhere he’s been, has shown the ability to take losing teams to greater heights. He got fired from LSU not because they sucked, but because they failed to compete for the natty. A coach of his caliber isn’t one that a place like SC should dismiss off hand other than the age.

You would want one of those two rather than someone like Alex Golesh or Scott Satterfield? I think the ceiling is higher with those two. We know what Franklin and Kelly can't do.

They both could certainly fit the profile of the up & coming coach type. Problem is with a cycle like this with all the open jobs and more likely to come they probably have better options. Or in Satterfield’s case why leave the Big 12 - an auto big league where you’re already a contender?

In Kelly & Franklin you have very accomplished coaches who’ve already been at big places; who normally aren’t going to be on the market and in this market are going to be rather available, all things considered.

Although they didn’t reach the greatest heights there doesn’t mean they can’t somewhere. And what they have done that has them labeled as failures elsewhere is better than anything anyone has done at SC. In Franklin’s case especially, if he had the type of seasons at SC that he had at PSU he’s not going to be fired and has the freedom to figure it out. Even if he had a wheels fall off season, we could stomach that, PSU decided they wouldn’t. I believe they’re going to highly regret this.

I would just worry that Kelly or Franklin would take the job for the buyout like Fisher did at A&M. (Maybe not Franklin but I bet Kelly would.)

I don't believe Franklin or Kelly would even consider coming to SC because of our history of "coaching graveyard". Our next hire will be someone from a G5 program. Somebody looking to prove himself at the P4 level and then move up to a bigger program. I expect JD already has his eye on a few.

I hope Donati does and imo that is what should happen, outside of at least asking Franklin. If they never bother pursuing Kelly that’s understandable.

Odds are steep for a variety of reasons. However, Franklin might be more inclined. Spurrier showed that winning here is possible with the right talent. He was just on the tail-end of his career and didn't have the drive any longer. Franklin is still just 54 and a proven program builder, and I think he would take great pride in the thought of coming here and establishing the program. He doesn't have to worry about running out of gas like SOS did.

At his age, I doubt Kelly is looking to rebuild a program. But he's also not going to get many (any) major P4 offers.

Can you draw parallels to Spurrier though? I still contend a lot of the players that came here came to play for him. His name itself was a draw.

But now? I think kids are chasing money more than names. So a coach coming into our program would want to see the NIL budget and how it compares.

If it lacks, someone like Franklin may not even consider us.

Valid point. It would take a coach of the right mentality and ability to recruit well and identify attainable talent without a massive NIL budget.

I think Beamer has managed to assemble a decently talented roster within the existing parameters. You are what your record says your are, but I believe we are more talented than 3-5.
