I just watched the 2nd Half Replay....

I can't help it, I really want Mark Stoops to succeed. I don't understand what the major problem is with the team, but I'll surmise:

- It seems to me that DJ Eliot really has hurt our defense and now Stoops is trying to save it by taking over DC responsibilities. If you think about it, it's a very dramatic move for a Head Coach to take over DC responsibilities in the middle of a season! We know Stoops can coach from his past resume. He didn't forget how to coach defense once he came to UK.

- We've had QBs who are complete deer in headlights with NO POISE. NO POISE = Barker and Towles. Stephen Johnson is the first QB I've seen at UK in a long time who has poise. He doesn't look like a deer in headlights. I really like his game.

- Our D-Line has very little talent. We knew that before the season started and now it's a reality. I hope Stoops can somehow get our secondary and LBs playing better to compensate a little.

- I believe Stoops has recruited some players with low character and that is infecting the team. I'll say Barker acted like an idiot last year with at least 2 off field incidents and that may be indicative of his overall character and poise. He doesn't seem like the brightest bulb in the box. Stephen Johnson seems much more mature and poised. Maybe Johnson will help us get to 6 wins?

- If Stoops can improve our Defense at all as DC, we should have a chance at 6 wins. I think our Offense will put up some points going forward with Johnson, Conrad, Boom, Snell, Juice, Timmons stepping up..

Do you realize who UK was playing yesterday?
NMSU is not SC,Vandy,,MsSt,and could have won this game.Second half offense and a punt return for a td daved the day.Otherwise UK fans could have been looking at a repeat of Southern Miss who incidently, lost to Neal Brown and Troy.

I feel your pain and I like your optimism. But sometimes you have to be a realist. Stoops is supposed to be a talented defensive mind. So he takes control of the defense and the other team (who happens to be a VERY BAD team) marches up and down the field at will. The other problems you referenced are Stoops fault as well. He's in his fourth year so it is HIS hand picked players you refer to i.e. D line that are part of our problem. Those aren't Joker's players any longer. I also agree with your comments about how some of our guys stepped up and looked great but you have to realize how bad New Mexico State is. Those same guys won't do that against 99% of the teams we play. Stoops has proven that he's in over his head. I don't know the answer but I know he's not it.

In excited that the offense did what it should do against a bad team. Put up 55 pts. The defense looked bad in the first half and got better in the 2nd half. That is pretty much all i can take away from the game.

I have to say I appreciate your loyalty, and I don't think anyone doesn't want him to succeed, but they're just not seeing it. Also, please come over to the national board ( Link ) where I just started a thread about our program. It could use some new blood and perspective. It's getting several replies.

The notion that Stoops is coming in to clean up Eliot's mess is silly. Larry Glover was talking last night on his show about how media and those close to the program that stand on the sidelines during the game have known that Stoops has been making the defensive calls for a long, long time.

This latest move is nothing more than Stoops doing another one of his spin jobs with the media so that he can buy himself more time.

If you just want to be upset fine by don't make silly statements about positive things. If the other team would had run a kick off or punt return for a TD, you would have said we suck but since we did it, it's luck. Get over your anger, the past 3 games are over, let's see if they can stay lucky.

I like Stoops because he wanted this job when others didn't and has worked very hard to get the much needed facility improvements. He has done all he can to try and build this program the right way, but it's painful watching how bad his defense is playing and just the general ineptitude of this program taking the next step under his watch.

I agree. I think Stoops has worked extremely hard. He has just not proven yet that he's a good head coach. I hope he proves it very soon.

Stoops has only proven that he is not a great coach, he's proven he is not a good coach and I think because he got outcoached by Vandy and Souther Miss that he is not even an average coach. To me it's only up in the air as to whether he's only a below average coach or a terrible coach.

I guess you forgot wins against Vandy, Mizzou, and South Carolina? Do those give him any credit?

Hell I want him to succeed! He's just not shown any real improvement in his teams one his own development. He and his teams continue to repeat the exact same mistakes.

I "like" Stoops as a person. However, as Head Coach of UK Football, he has failed to earn my confidence in his abilities. From the product that he has put on the field, it's apparent that he is lacking in the skills needed to not only develop his players, but also inspire them to improve.

I hope he can prove me wrong these next 9 games.

I agree with what most posters say about Stoops, but I think he is a decent guy. I think he is a guy I would enjoy having a beer with. Is he a good coach, he hasn't proven he's a good HC, but he was a really good DC. I think his loyalty to some of his coaches has him between a "Rock and a Hard Place".
We saw the game move to fast for him last year, primarily because he didn't trust his OC. Against USM, everyone loved him the 1st half and hated him the 2nd half. Against Florida, he was hated after the first snap. Against NMS he was hated the first half, and a lot of fans didn't know how to feel the second half. Some of them, who call themselves UK fans, even wanted UK to lose. Some fans will NEVER be happy, regardless of what happens. They'll always be miserable. They could reach in a "Barrel of pu$$ys and pull out an A$$hole."

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!

I am starting to wonder how good of a defensive coach he really is. Sure he did well at FSU where he probably coached pretty much all 4 and 5 star players. Any competent coach should be able to. Being able to be successful with lesser talent and adjusting your schemes to match your talent is a sign of a great coach. As of right now, I don't think he has those attributes.

Many of us didn't believe a 3-4 defense would work here and it never had in the past. Yet he chooses to run a defense we struggle to get the players for that can run it. That seems like a sign of a poor head coach. I give him credit for improving the recruiting and helping get the improvements to the facilities, but that will only get you so far and he has just about worn out his welcome.
