I think he'd rather recruit out west, in the midwest, or the northeast. His style certainly works better out there.

I guess their is alot pf prestige to coach in the sec but being in the division that State is in makes it tough a hell to win consistently.

Unless he finds another Tim Tebow or Cam Newton. Eventually his only option will be to change offenses or change conferences.

I'd consider that successful at MSU. So yes an awesome mobile QB would be nice, but a better O line would make us 8-4 or 9-3 this year or better.

Because, I ain't seeing it. He made every wrong call that could possibly be made in season one. And, he still can't be trusted in a remotely tight ballgame in year three.

We play competitively, but there always seems to be (at least) one third of our overall game that implodes on any given week. This week, we shared the wealth. Our kickoffs were great, our FG's guaranteed the loss, while our WRs left a good TD or two unrealized.

Dan was hired on the premise that he be allowed to learn on the job. So far, he has made little progression from season one to season three. He can be trusted in a close game today as much (maybe less) as he could be trusted his first year. And he has more than proven that he can't recruit.

Legit SEC teams do not hire works in progress. We are not, and will not be, legit until we spend money on a legit coach and staff.

Strickland, this is YOUR disaster. 0-4 in the SEC with auburn, Uga and scar on the schedule is incomprehensible.

I appreciate the excitement Mullen has brought to MSU football, but at the end of the day we are still MSU.

It amazes me the people who think Dan is the problem.
And this iswhyyou people are crazy. WE ARE NOT THE SAME M-State, but we have the wrong guy leading the charge!!

Of course the outcome ultimately falls on Dan but play calling didn't kill us today. He does need to get some better position coaches but we are a much better team than we were the rest of this century. I've been following this jalopy since Shira was the coach and I see some hope for the future that I haven't seen very often. Recruiting is what will make or break Dan.

When I was in school (Croom era) people did not even give a **** about our football program. Mullen came in and marketed the hell out of our team like no other coach/leader we have ever had and brought on expectations, which I appreciate. The issue we have is recruiting and building depth and unfortunately we are the same M-State in that aspect.

Recruits in our "pipeline" have access to all the SEC schools and buy into having nice facilities, stadiums and rich alumni. We are working on those (and only because of the expectations Dan have brought) but we will never be able to catch up. We are a school of right at 20K students, which is only larger than Vandy and maybe Ole Miss (I know it is close). Our Athletic budget is the lowest in the SEC. Actually, all but three schools (Bears, Vandy and Ark) double our athletic budget, so you have to realize that we are at a significant disadvantage and will likely always be that way. Our athletic budget is actually more on line (actually less) less than schools like South Florida.

I understand that it is Mullen's job to recruit but it isn't easy when you are at such a disadvantage. This is exactly why he is trying to build a program through aggressive marketing because that is one thing completely under his control and the only chance we have. In my opinion Mullen is the exact type of guy we need to win at State, but unfortunately too many of our fans don't understand the commitment it takes from our coaches and administration to win here.

And as ridiculous and sheepish as this sounds, it really does take a commitment from our fans as well. I can guarantee you it does nothing to help our program (recruiting or otherwise) when our fans talk **** to our team on twitter or come on a message board and bash a coach or player. It is one thing to have an opinion, but it is another thing to overreact and do/say something stupid after every loss like too many of our fans do.

...this season will make him realize the effort he will need to put into recruiting (particularly at the JUCO level)...I don't think Mullen is the type to stick with a single approach and will try different things to win...competing against Bama (recruits on tradition), Auburn (will cheat to win), LSU (only school in the state that counts w.r.t to football) and Arkansas (another only school in the state the counts w.r.t. to football) is just tough year end and year out...if we can beat two of these teams then we have very respectable season.

And it WAS a breath of fresh air.

I remember when Bellard got here, and he ran around telling the alumni clubs "I was amazed at how little talent we have for a team trying to compete in the SEC".

Then Felker got here, and he ran around telling all the alumni clubs "Its really surprising how little talent we have for a team trying to compete in the SEC".

Then Sherrill shows up, and he runs around saying "We have plenty of talent, and can compete in the SEC right away. What we need is fan support and a different attitude around here!"

It was great. And he won. And then he lost. And then he went on the most successful 4 year stretch in MSU football history. And then he lost some more.

I don't like Mullens' offense. I really don't see any advantages to running this offense as opposed to a more conventional offense like Alabama and LSU run, and we simply cannot beat the good defenses with it. I thought the offense would be more imaginative, but we don't even get that.

Our redzone performance is pathetic, just as Florida's was when trying to run this offense. I don't think the redzone percentages will ever improve.

But, I like what Mullen brings to the program as a head coach. He has won me over off the field, even though he leaves me scratching my head when I see the product on the field. I think he'll do fine, whenever he finally gives up on this offense.

couldn't say this better. the difference between us uga aub and sc isn't that we have terrible coaching. it's talent. plain and simple. those 4 and 5 *s they get are the difference in our games. i know that also falls on mullen but he has only had 2 full classes of his own. 2 classes with a bottom tier sec team and people want his head. you can't come into state and have immediate success in the sec or in recruiting. now if things haven't changed in 2 years then there is a problem. this is a building process and mullen needs time. i'm not saying he will be able to do it but it's not time to say that he can't yet.

Going to take time. Dan will have to become a better game day coach and a much better recruiter. Miss State fans will have to continue to increase their support. 6-6 is not out of the question this year. While that will definitely be a disappointment, it will bring a minor bowl. Baby steps. Probably the biggest issue is that Dan is being paid extremely well to deliver such a pisspoor offensive team this year. He will learn; he will improve. He will leave us in far better shape when he eventually leaves compared to what he inherited. In the meantime, Dan is paid more than sufficiently. Any additional salary increases need to go toward rewarding our good assistants and upgrading the ones who are dead weight.
