I have a question about Neal McCready...

I've always liked the way he runs the Ole Miss rivals site b/c he isn't afraid to tell it like it is - even with Ole Miss and that gets him in trouble sometimes with his subscribers.

But....do you think he can't be a fan of the school that is his alma mater and run a fan site at the same time? I honestly don't think anyone can considering you went to school there. Plus, he did a hash tag of #FailState during the game Thursday. So either he hates State, is a fan of Ole Miss, or both.

"So either he hates State, is a fan of Ole Miss, or both."
BOTH. And his false pretense of being an "objective outsider" is the worst.

I think he is both a fan of ole miss and hates MSU dating back to the kang era. He goes way out of his way to try and be objectives sometimes. I think his early career as a real journalist makes him loathe the way most fan site administrators operate. The problem is that real unbiased journalism and fan site reporting leads to fundamental conflict.

He has written in the past about being pissed about getting approved to be an AP voter and then they reneged b/c he's a fan site guy. I think he has a certain loathing for the climate of the business he finds himself in. At the end of the day, I respect him as a talented writer.

Yeah he opened his interview with Bo Bounds this morning by saying.."well not being from Mississippi I'm kind of an outsider looking in as far as what the egg bowl means so..." That was really all I needed to hear. Comical.

I didn't have much of a problem with anything he said this morning in his interview with Bo Bounds with the exception of the comment about Dak getting "the needle" at halftime so he could take the field in the second half. That is a ludicrous statement to make, even if it was "his opinion", as he stated. You don't express those opinions when there is absolutely no basis for it whatsoever. Until that point, I thought the interview was pretty good.

I didn't have too much of a problem with his interview as well. Just thinking to myself if I graduated from a school and worked for a fan site for my alma mater - I would automatically "be a fan". I know people are different but I really find it impossible.

Claims to objectivity are claims to power. In other words, it's just part of his schtick. Postmodernity 'n' stuff.

If the money was right, I don't see why someone with the objectivity of say, Veazey, couldn't run a fan site of their own school. Although not knowing much about Mcready or fan site finances, I just imagine being a homer is more profitable.

I'd rather see an allegedly objective OM fan site guy tweeting #failstate than an ESPN hack spending 20 tweets dogging our uniforms.

Follow up: I do think you can strive for objectivity even if you don't get there 100%. Veazey, Godfrey, and Carskadon are all good examples. They write from a perspective, of course, but they don't exhibit outright homerism or even the kind of bias you might expect of a "fan." But you can also claim "objectivity" as a way to build your brand, sell subscriptions, etc. I don't read McCready enough to know if he's the latter.

He's the most objective of the fan site writers. Ben Garrett is a close second.

Deep down, both want Ole Miss to do well, but both are decent a leaving their "feelings" out of their articles.

He's clearly a fan of om. He can't hide his OM fandom when his disdain for nutt shines thru. He clearly oversteps the line of professionalism and into fandom when he starts going off on nutt the way he does.

Ben Garrett is a close second? You are 17ing kidding right? Did you listen to the podcast with roundsaville? There was nothing, I mean nothing remotely objective from Ben in that. Roundsaville is a fan and I never expected him to sound objective. Ben is a cheerleader same as any other. Nothing to be ashamed of. Unless of course you can't see it.

I don't think the people running fan sites are expected to be objective. They're all homers to one degree or another. Some of them may try to act like they're objective, but they're not.
