I know this is probably an Uber-Germanic post, but IF yall did fire Mullen...

...(and I don't think yall would/will) if yall end up having a bad season this year, would it be any different than when Ole Miss fired Cutt?

We got absolutely roasted for firing him after one losing season. However, we (Ole Miss fans) all saw the program's lack of talent accumulated by Cutt and noticed problems. He couldn't even recruit decent enough talent after having a #1 draft pick/record breaking QB. Eli masked most of our problems, but folks outside of Ole Miss wouldn't acknowledge or notice them.

Hell, I still hear it from folks (not just MSU fans, but mostly MSU fans) that we fired our 2nd best coach ever and that we were idiots for it. Sure, Boone & Kayat screwed up by hiring the Red Bull Mascot from the Bayou, but he did end up bringing in an influx of NFL talent.

So, I ask the Pack. In this hypothetical situation, would firing Mullen be the same as Ole Miss firing Cutt??

It would certainly have some similarities. I doubt very seriously that Mullen

will lose his job due to his record this year and I'll leave it at that.

I know the general consensus isCutcliffe got canned because of recruiting and

His unwillingness to acquire decent coordinators, all of which are true. Those are subjective reasons though and difficult to quantify. I got tired of having that argument with people, so I began explaining in a manner everyone would agree with: he got canned because he started Justin Wade over Patrick Willis for two years because he was an upper classman. The conversation always ended there.

That pretty strong logic, Willis is a damn beast. The fact of the matter is

coaches just like anyone else can get fired for a variety or reasons besides job performance ie. wins and losses.

Yes, and damn you.

I was going to wait until Troy was a close game this weekend, get the exact same State fans who derided OM for firing Cutcliffe to firm up their positions that Dan should be fired, then beat them over the head with their own Cutcliffe logic for the next few weeks.

Cat's out of the bag.

In retrospect, do you think it was the right move to fire Cutt? He won more games in 6 years than UM did in the 8 years after he was fired. He went to 4 bowls in 6 years (should have been 5) - you've been to 3 bowls in the 8 years since. He was 4-2 vs MSU. 3-5 since.

FWIW, I'm totally against firing Mullen and agree it would be a similar situation. I thought it was ignorant to fire Cutt regardless of the arguments people made.

Obviously NO, because HUD will win us the BCS Champ next year.

Haven't you been reading??

firing cut was the right thing to do. your right. he had eli manning and that's what saved the seasons for him. he should of done a lot more with the players he had. same exact situation here with dan. I think hiring hud would be perfect for us and definitely for our rival with you guys.

It was the right move. Eight years is a long time these days, and he had worn out his welcome. Recruiting took a nosedive, he was seriously ill, and all of the good asistants had moved on.

firing cutcliffe was definitely the right move. screwing the pooch in replacing him was the problem. without eli manning cut would NOT have been the "2nd winningest coach in ole miss history" and the 4-7 he delivered without eli would have been more the norm.

The only person who has ever said anything about a BCS championship is Mullen. Coincidentally, he is also the only SEC coach to mention a "state championship". So if you support Mullen, yes you believe we will win it, this year somehow, just gotta get control.

First of all, Cuttcliffe would coach circles around Mullen. Secondly, like others have stated, firing Cutt wasnt the issue, it was firing him without having a competent replacement waiting in the wings.

I'm at the point where I don't care either way if we fire or don't fire Mullen. He helped stabilize the program but hasn't done much more than that. I'm 100% on the Hud bandwagon.

The difference is a lot of SEC schools would like to have Cutcliffe but can't have him. I don't see Mullen getting another shot at the SEC. MSU needs to be paying a guy $2.3 mil and overpaying for really great assistants. Not the other way around.

As an Ole Miss fan, I can tell you that no Ole Miss fan wants yall to get Hud. That is exactly why I hope he gets offered a decent job this offseason. However, I think he could really make things interesting in state. A good Ole Miss team and a good MSU team would make for epic Egg Bowls (I'd hope at least).

You do realize that probably over half of the MSU folks criticizing yall for firing Otis were jerking your chain don`t you ? If you had kept him around we would have called yall a bunch of numb nuts for keeping a losing coach because you couldn`t do any better. News flash...we`re gonna critsize you every chance we get for anything we can.

Not only did Cut recruit 2 and 3 star players, he didn't recruit enough players. His last three recruiting classes averaged 14 recruits that actually made it to campus. That's apathy and self imposed probation. 8 months after we fired hin he had to have a quadruple bypass. There's no way he could have coached anything in 2005. Lastly, on head to head yesterday khayat said "ok David we need to know what your plan is to get us back on track". Cutcliffe came to the meeting barehanded with no plan at all. He was sick and had other things on his mind I suppose. Not getting the full allotment of players to campus by an average of ten guys three years in a row is a fireable offense to me. No brainer. It means you really just don't care.

Cutcliffe went 7-1 in the SEC one time. The best Mullen has done is 4-4.

Not that I'm onboard with firing Mullen, but the situations aren't the same.
