I like seeing the emotion on Mullen...

It's the kind of emotion that makes me laugh when UF thinks they are just going to swoop in and take him 'if they want him' after this year...

I do think he really likes it here. He has a pretty sweet gig on top of it. He will be anointed as the savior if he stays here and it's not like he's making beans. He is in the top 15 for salaries if I'm not mistaken.

I say we give him a nice base pay raise as well as incentivize the heck out of his new contract and he ain't going anywhere.

This game is an emotional roller coaster. Recruiting, rivalries, training, game planning, no sleep... and it's all thankless work when you don't win. People also tend to forget at times that this game of inches doesn't only impact the scoreboard, but coaches' lives as well. We were a play away from only winning 5 games last year, missing the postseason, and Dan's butt getting warm during a very, very long offseason for everyone. Thankfully, the right play was made and it all sounds ridiculous in hindsight, but I bet that Dan hasn't forgotten.

There probably aren't words to describe how he felt Sat night, and I'm glad as hell that he got that opportunity, no matter what happens from here on out.

Speaking to the mindset of FL fans mostly. The ones here in ATL just feel that

if they want him, he will go there. Conveniently forgetting how they made fun of him for leaving and claimed that they were better off without him. You know the hardest recruiting job Meyer ever had was to get Tebow to come even though he hated Mullen........

and with the job security to back it up. i never thought i would say this, but our history of losing is working to our advantage.

sure, those other schools have history, championships, heisman winners, but our facilities are now up to par, our fanbase is growing, we are getting waves of attention, recruits are rolling in, and we have the number 1 team in the nation with a matching salary for a coach WITHOUT the yoke of a psychotic and ever-demanding fanbase with fairly low (yet improving) expectations. if mullen has a losing season at any of those other schools, he is immediately on the hot seat.

If Florida wanted to double what they pay Muschamp - they would. That's where we might have a problem but at some point - mo money mo problems. I think we would increase Mullen to 4 Million if need be and up the assistant salaries.

There is no doubt that Mullen is and can be well compensated, we have an AD that has consistently worked to get what Mullen wants, we have the facilities to compete (if not always be #1) in the SEC, we've got a State that we've proven is full of talent for recruiting, and we play in the best football conference in the country.

I think Mullen is probably happy here, and that he is not likely to jump to Florida or Michigan, but let's be honest with ourselves, we don't know what his ambitions really are. His life long goal may be to establish himself and be the Joe Paterno (or probably more aptly, the Frank Beamer) of Mississippi State. Or he may see every opportunity as a chance to step up one more rung. He may go to Florida, spend 2 great years there and jump to the NFL.

Whatever happens, he's bought himself 3-5 more years here at State.

He's seeing his vision for the team and the school finally coming to reality. Like when your kid grows up and graduates or gets married. Nothing wrong with that.

I said it a few days ago in a thread. We have had zero intense passion from our coach since The Kangs first had tenure. Love it.

I was pretty much convinced hearing his interview with Jim after the Bama game last year. It felt like he knew we were so close to getting the pieces in place, and that this was his baby.

even when he tears up. Makes me think he really loves it at State.

Yeah, me too. Makes me think it's a lot more than money. That said, we'll have to give him a nice raise this year. And we need to double Geoff Collins' salary. Assuming we don't just fold from here on in, and maybe even if we do. The coaches are doing a great job this year. Mullen's playcalling has been good too as far as I'm concerned (except for the fake punt ....).

A bigger situation is not always a better situation. Ask Rich Rod how going to a bigger situation worked out for him. Ask Manny Diaz how going to a bigger situation worked out for him. Yes, going from coordinator to head coach is one thing, and I wouldn't blame Collins for leaving if that is his aspiration, but Dan's situation is different. He's already a head coach, he's already in the best conference in the nation, he's already in the best division of the best conference in the nation. He's being paid a top 15 salary in the nation. He's laid the foundation here. The hardest part has been done. I'm actually glad this has come up again. Maybe, maybe, we can put it to bed for good after this year.

Go to UF and make $4m/yr for 5 years before getting canned and winding up at South Alabama making $1m. OR. Stay at Mississippi State for another 10 (or however many he wants) years at $3.5m/yr and watch that number increase and increase. Worst case scenario that number stays the same.

I imagine his house is completely paid off. I imagine he pays a lot less in taxes in Starkville than in Gainesville, even factoring in income tax.

He has to do very little going forward to get his name inside the stadium and a statue out front. He'll never be #1, #2, #3, or 4-6 at UF. Ever.

If Coach Mullen would even consider talking to FL, I would recommend he first contact a Coach Urban Meyer and another one that goes by the name of Spurrier and get their honest opinion about that job. Mullen may never return the call to FL's AD.
Coach Mullen certainly deserves a raise that goes with the success we ALL have enjoyed, but our assistants will really need big raises or they will be gone. Some may leave due to the fact that most successful programs are replacing, at least some assistants each year, because it is perceived they have learned the formula for reproducing that success.

Point of fact, Florida has no state income tax.

nothing further.

What does that have to do with anything? Florida could pay him more than we could with or without a state income tax. If they want him (big question) and if it's all about money (again, big question), he's gone. Why do people obsess over this? Dan Mullen is our football coach and he's doing a hell of a job. We all love him. If he leaves, we will be a very attractive job for a lot of good coaches. Why can't we just enjoy this season and know that our program is in very good shape?

read what i quoted, he mentioned income tax, i just pointed out florida doesn't have a state income tax. other than being factually correct i guess it doesn't matter, but i figured i'd throw it out there. I usually stay out of these threads because they're stupid, full of people with their emotions, feelings and thoughts with no actual facts or statements by the person being spoken about. I don't know what is gonna happen, but I do know i'm happy we have Dan and would love for him to stay for as long as he wants (within reason pending onfield results) . If he wants to take the first jet to the next big thing I'm happy for him because he has built us to where we are and will leave us in an advantageous position in regards to finding our next coach. What i'm not gonna assume is that I know what is going on in Dan's mind, what's said in conversations in the Mullen house or anything else.

on another note, you're a bit touchy..take a break, drink a beer, relax and follow your own advice and enjoy the season.

Florida has no income tax, but it does have an intangible assets tax, which taxes things like your investments. If you've got a lot of money, you've probably got a lot of it in the stock market, mutual funds, etc. All those things are taxed. Plus property taxes in Florida will be higher. So it's very possible that your overall taxes could be higher in Florida even without an income tax. All states tax you. If they don't tax your income, they tax something else.

Edit: But you're right, I didn't read the post you were replying to.

Of course I know that Florida doesn't have income tax. That's why I mentioned it. I meant for you to read that DESPITE them not having income taxes, he's still better off staying here. Go buy the same lakefront home he has now in Gainesville and not only is it 3x the cost, the property tax vs what he's paying in Oktibehha County, Mississippi makes it barely worth it.

The insurance cost of a multimillion dollar home in Florida, the cost of putting your kid in a private school in Florida vs Starkville Academy, blah blah blah everything else, why would he leave for another $500,000 a year when he's already farther ahead?
