but the 4th and 5 call was criminal to me. Make it a one possession game. You play different. The opposing team plays different knowing that one error ties up the game even in the 2nd quarter. I never thought we would snap it because I thought we were trying to draw them offsides.

Bad situational coaching again by Lebby.

Lebby is learning to be a head coach on the job. Everyone forgets we went thru this crap with Mullen also.
Regardless you have to kick the field goal in that situation.
The problem is that this is basic decision making that every single football person on earth knows you take the points. This is not graduate level study...

We're down 17-10 at the half if we take those points. Instead, 24-7 and the game was over.

Probably not winning that game - UGA played their best game of the year, but that was criminal.

How can you for sure say we would be down 17-10 at halftime? If we had kicked and made the field goal, we would have kicked off to Georgia with over 2 minutes to go in the half and they would've probably driven down and scored a touchdown because that's what they all day long and it would've been 24-10 at halftime. The score was 38-7 early in the third quarter. I don't know why y'all think a field goal with 2:30 left in the second quarter to make it a seven-point game would've been some magic points that made Georgia fall apart and lose the game, when they pushed our schitt in all day long. Lebby knew Georgia was going to score a lot of points and knew field goals weren't going to make a difference, so he gambled on scoring a touchdown. If we get the first down there, we can burn more clock and then score a touchdown with close to no time on the clock, so Georgia wouldn't have time to go back down and score. Then it could be 17-14 at halftime. It didn't work, but it's not the worst decision I've ever seen. There were much dumber decisions made by coaches across the country on Saturday (Clark Lea's going for it on fourth down from the 25 in a tie game with a minute left being the worst), but the people who already don't like Lebby are going to pick apart everything that he does.

You're assuming Ferrie makes that FG. He misses one per game.

He's 9 for 12 on the year.
In all three of our SEC losses that we should have won (Tennessee, Texas, and Florida), he missed a FG that ultimately was the difference in the game. All three if them were between 40 and 45 yards and should have been chip shots for him.

I don't buy this "learning on the job" stuff. He's a HC in the SEC making $4mil a year and doesn't know the difference? You and most people say he should have kicked it. He's been a player or coach his whole life, he's been coaching in some capacity since 2002 (yes 23 years) as a GA, head coach in HS, asst college and now a SEC HC. If he hasn't picked up tips in 23 years coaching plus his playing days, then he doesn't deserve $4mil a year to learn on the job.

Wasn't Texas FG blocked? Florida FG - ehhhh. I will give you Tennessee.

For as great as we think Ferrie is, he is 13th out of 16 kickers in the SEC in field goal percentage at 75%, and he would be tied for last at 66% if Arkansas hadn't of had a running into the kicker penalty on a kick he missed that he got to re-kick and make. It really shows just how historically bad we have been at place kicking that we think Ferrie is one of our best ever kickers, when in actuality he's pretty good, but still bottom fourth of the SEC.

It's hard to coach when you're out talented. If we take the FG, it keeps us in the game longer, and there is a good argument that all you want to do as the less talented team is keep it a game as long as possible and hope a break goes your way.

But there is also a good argument that we are not going to beat UGA kicking FGs. Their MO for much of hte season has been to wear people down late. We need to both keep their defense on the field and get TDs to have a chance to win.

THe problem with the latter approach is that it tends to result in being over aggressive and puts you out of games early and even when you execute, it still doesn't win the game in the first half, but it does basically end the game when you don't execute. But I don't have a major problem with the decision. Not what I'd prefer but doesn't seem obviously stupid to me like some people are claiming.

On the Mullen comparison, I told myself that during the Tennessee game, and then through gritted teeth during the UF game.
That being said, I need help remembering when Mullen had these levels of bad decisions.
I can think of two early in his career:
1. Not challenging Lee being beyond the line of scrimmage vs Houston.
2. Changing from run to the pass vs Auburn in 2011 when their DL was gassed.

I questioned starting Williams at QB in 2016, but by then Mullen was a vet. I also didn't like some of the play calling strategy vs Bama in 2014 and UM in 2015, and sticking with 1A/1B D in the Orange Bowl when Preston Smith was single-handedly wrecking Tech, but again, by then he was a vet. What dumb young-Mullen decisions am I forgetting?

I said the same thing. You take the points and make it a 7 point game. The crowd is back into the game and hopefully we help the D make a stand before half. You go in down 7, playing hard coming off a big stop on D. Instead we give it over on downs, the wind is out of the sails of the players and the fans. They go down and score and then get the ball to start the 2nd half. The game was over at that point. Just another bad (dumb) decision by Lebby.

And some will say "if he kicked you would have been mad he didn't go for it!" All I can say is everyone around me in section 3 was literally screaming to kick the field goal. Even the average fan knew that was the smart move at that point in the game.

Also...I'm not going to get into the fact we ran a 2 yard out when we needed 4 years for the 1st down.

This isn't because I don't like or support him - I actually do think he's showing progress. That doesn't mean we can't second guess a bad decision.

You have to TAKE THE POINTS, kick off deep and trust your defense to stop them. Would you rather play defense down 7 with 2:00 to go at Georgia's 25 yard line, or down 10 at our own 30? This is a ridiculous argument. It's not even a question.

I'm over it, but you definitely take points when you can get them, stop their momentum, and pin them deep. Especially in the first half.

You really can't coach thinking he might miss the FG there. You have to make the right coaching call trusting he's going to make it. Then if he missed it, we'd all be whining about Ferrie today, but at least we would have knowledge that Lebby made the right decision.

Just pointing out that Ferrie hasn't exactly been a sure thing.

I think it’s a mentality of he’s playing to win not keep it close and he didn’t think we had a prayer of winning if we settle for a FG there. Which it probably wouldn’t have mattered even if we score a TD. But it was the first drive in a while where we’d moved the ball even a little bit, so I can kinda get him being bound and determined to get 7 or nothing there when you’re already down 10 and clearly overmatched.

Other decisions this year I’ve had more of a problem with. But chasing a TD against a team that’s dominating you more than anyone else has all year… yeah I don’t have a big issue with it personally. Realize I’m in the minority though.

We were on the 23. Regardless, it's a tweener decision where you have bake in what you think the defense is going to provide rest of game. We are the 2nd worst defense in the league (Lebby owns that) - UGA was certainly going to wear us down and put up more than our average of close to 40ppg given up. A FG might have slowed it down just enough to give us a moral victory Sunday morning but that's it. MSU is not beating UGA by the conservative book this year. Just not happening. I'm okay with risk taking against far superior teams. It's the only way to knock them off. Against a closer matched team? Try to grab 3 from 40.

I saw it the other way. Him going for it there seemed like a desperation move to me, and it was way too early for that.

We had looked very competitive on the first drive of the game, then held them to a FG. I know that all changed later in the game, but you would think (at that point) he should have been thinking: we can score on these guys, let's just get some momentum back and settle everything down. But no, he went full desperation mode. Which in turn, gave them ALL the momentum and confidence. Not that they needed it, but damn, why even risk that.

I know all this discussion would be different had Fluff caught the ball and broken one tackle.

Maybe I was just being naive, but I was thinking we still had a chance to win being down only 7 at half 🤷‍♂️

It’s an old school vs new school philosophical thing at the end of the day and I think both sides have some merit.

No we didn't. Mullen was a competent coach on day 1. If Lebby wasn't ready for this job on the day he was hired, he was a bad hire.
Nah just two off the top of my head were him hiring Torbush as DC was a monumentally bad hire at the time and we all said as much. That cost us a winning season his first year. Then not emphasizing to Tyson Lee to pitch to Boobie on the goal line vs LSU no matter what.

If my memory is correct, late in the 2014 game at LSU, Mullen got POd over something when we had the ball at about LSU's 5 yard line, and went for it rather than kick the field goal. We acted like the game was over and LSU almost came back. Those 3 points ultimately didn't matter, but at the time would have been really nice to have had.

Bad situational coaching again by Lebby.
Our broadcast team though also they would just draw offsides or time out and kick. As Matt Wyatt said after the failed attempt, "not making that 4th down is the same as an interception or fumble. No difference"

I think this dead horse has been beaten enough, but one last comment and I promise I'll shut up about it...

Since they already had momentum, giving them a short field was a really REALLY bad decision. Again, I know this is a totally different discussion if Fluff catches that ball and breaks a tackle, but throwing it short of the marker doesn't seem like a genius level decision either.

Okay, I'm done. We really need to beat Mizzou so we can go in playing loose against Ole Miss. DAMMIT there goes my optimism again.
