You definitely DON’T want it used on your kids....but if you’re startled and fire..chances are it will.

the last thing an intruder wants to see or hear—is another person. MdWildcats’s suggestion is awesome. If you’re awake and can do it, The sound of that double pump is hell on any intruder.
Where do you get your basis . . . "chances are it will"? From what source of information other than straight out of your *** are you able to cite on behalf of "the smart money" knowing that an awakened homeowner is more likely to shoot a family member than a loved one? What credible source of information do your have for your stupidness other than your own, quick draw imagination? Also, and know this bro, on behalf of the home and the family is the best of all reasons for doing any and everything in life, getting up and going to work, taking care of the children that are "exclusively" yours, and owning a firearm if you so choose.

Your instant rush to ad hominem tells me all I need to know. You can wish away accidental gun deaths all you want, but they happen.

“hey..where’s your statistical proof that swallowing tobacco juice makes you sick?!?”

you are seriously unhinged—and worse..a libertarian. No one is treading on your rights, Mrs. Ranyd. It’s impossible for you to see that a person can be pro gun, yet see shortcomings in some people’s delusional thinking they will be the “good guy with a gun” every time someone breaks into your house.

Here.

If someone is so easily unaware of their surroundings that they would grab a weapon and shoot a family member by mistake (I know it happens) then that person is too much of an idiot to own a gun and should resign themselves to being unprotected. That person should also not be allowed to own/drive a car, operate a chainsaw, etc.

Those are dangerous.

Yeah . . . you scrubbed the web pretty hard for that screen shot worthlessness. Nothing you have provided supports your own "rant" . . careless implications, a homeowner is more likely to shoot a loved one. Oh, and the agony I feel of being associated with Ayn Rand, while you, at present, are associated with an inability to connect your own meanings to a supplementing one.

By the way, I had no actual position on this subject other than to point out yours was flawed and how it was flawed. In my opinion those flaws were manifested by stupidness on your part.

It was you who deviated from your position by attacking me. Which I do not mind one iota. In fact, I rather enjoy a lively banter to be quite honest. But the point is, sir, if you are going to use Latin phrasings to describe conditions or for any other purpose, it is best to know how to use Latin correctly. Otherwise, the appearance of stupidness only grows instead of diminishing. And that, sir . . . is an example of how other people are told all they need to know. btw, I'm not a libertarian. Also, nice emoji work. You're good at that.

do you have statistics backing your claim my argument is flawed? [laughing]

Im reading your post and it definitely has a strong windbag vibe about it. Ad Hominem is attacking the person and not the argument. I’m in good shape there.

Buy guns. Buy them all..but keep them locked up and away from kids—and NO, you’re not likely to win a shootout at the OK Corral if you’re awakened by something that goes bump in the night. Insisting you will is just ludicrous and delusional.

It's really difficult to define with perfect certainty the when/what/where/why of it all.

What we do know is that there is roughly about 35,000 deaths per year in the US.
-Of this 35k, about ~61% is suicides.
-About ~35% is homicides.
-soooo, less than <5% is a mixture of LEO's (usually around ~500), accidental (usually around ~500), etc.

-It has been estimated that about 100,000 incidents are reported on average due to ALL firearm involvement.....this includes accidents, shootings/woundings, good/bad usage, suicides, defensive use, homicides, etc.

-It has been estimated that anywhere from 200,000 to 2.5 million incidents occur where a firearm was used in defense of something. This number is very hard to calculate. We do know that the FBI has noted that ~60-80,000 police reports are filed each year noting defensive firearm usage.......however, they freely admit that most defensive firearm usage is NOT reported. Many, many, many people just don't contact law enforcement when something happens.....and a huge portion of law enforcement either doesn't or can't file reports even when they occur.

But, like in life, everything is situational. I remember growing up waaaaay out in the sticks. We used to joke that "you don't find our front porch by accident. Our driveway was so long that momma has time to make a pot of coffee before you pull up.....etc, etc." If someone wanted to try a home invasion, a person would have to hoof it in a good distance in the dark......over fences and forests......not disturb the cows, horses, chickens, dogs.......avoid every creaky board on the front and rear porches.....not trip the alarm.....etc. It would've been more difficult for the Average Joe criminal to undergo a home invasion than it would be kick in the door of the average trailer park home or apartment......

But as they say, "don't bring a knife to a gun fight." Whether your chance of defense is very little or a decent amount, you're better off with a gun than without one when it comes to home defense.

A .22 just isn't going to do for your granddaughters home defense.
We need to start her off with a 9mm or .223.

Great discussion, and many good tips / advice...

Most important advice my Conceal Carry instructor said years ago, (Paraphrase); "Avoiding confrontation is your best option."

Most important advice my Krav Maga instructor said (Paraphrase); "Avoiding confrontation is your best option."

Now, when plan A doesn't work, it's great knowing you have other options in the ole' tool box besides "hope", as in I hope he/she/it/they don't hurt me or my family, .... because HOPE is not a plan...

Best advice among the tips was to "PRACTICE".....yes, Iverson, we're talking' bout PRACTICE!

One should choose his battles wisely. Sometimes the cost of victory is to high.

Ad hom is attacking the person instead of your own position. There is a distinction to be made from "the argument" there. Your position fluctuates . . . liberally. Never any way to lose by that method. Will not disagree with your stance on right to own, responsibility to secure.
