I predict Wilson to be announced today.

...makes me wonder if we're going after him for DC. We should have a lot of that money freed-up since we didn't get a big name.

1. Byrne wanted Petersen bad. He stalked. He prodded. He begged. He kept begging. He begged some more. He lost. +1 for f'n trying.
2. Byrne's heart wasn't in it with the other head coaching candidates like Kelly, Patterson as long as Petersen was playing footsy. Those guys aren't idiots; they knew who Byrne wanted. Those guys aren't interested in looking like the #2 or #3 choice for the prom. Byrne took aim at his #1 which cost us a shot at 2 equally good choices. Nature of the beast.
3. None of the other choices were palatable. Bowden? Tubbs? Graham? May as well take a flier on a young coordinator.
4. Young, aggressive coordinator it is.

So now, we turn to discussions of assistants. Who does Wilson bring? He better be serious about his DC. And he better be serious about special teams. And wait til Wilson gets a load of his great new OL. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Wilson has his first WTF? moment looking at his OL.

The thing I like about Wilson is that spending the last 5 years or so with Stoops, you can bet your *** that he'll be serious about defense and special teams.

Patterson turned down his alma mater KSU and Kelly turned down UT and AU (imo). They just weren't ready to move this year. Byrne was smart to target Petersen (who has turned down better jobs than yours) in the hope that he got lucky w/ timing, etc. It did not cost him a shot at Patterson or Kelly. At least you will know at the end of the day that a good search was conducted.

I read somewhere, probably a link from this page, that if Ellis left SC for another coordinator position he would have to pay them somewhere around $1million. There is no such buyout if he were to leave for a HC position. Anyway, if our new coach were to even be interested in him that's a lot of cash for a coordinator, regardless of how much we save on the HC position.

Patterson and Kelly were content. The only reasons we had a shot at Petersen were his previous relationship with Byrne and Oregon naming a successor to Bellotti. It was still an extremely long shot and I give Byrne a lot of credit for trying. It really would have been an absolutely ginormous blockbuster hire.

Bottom line was we had a long shot at Petersen and then we had some top tier assistants from major BCS programs and head coaches from CUSA level programs. That was most probably what it was all along. We allowed ourselves to think we had a shot at Kelly and Patterson, or some other top notch head coach, but we probably never did. No need to resign ourselves to anything, we still have a shot at a really, really good coach.

plan z. I fully believe that he was a safety net. Byrne wanted someone that he knew he could go to if we were turned down by everyone else on his list. I have to believe that Ellis Johnson was very very low on the list but Byrne new he could get him in a pinch.

I looked at his resume and he seems to be one of those guys who is a coordinator. He seems to have success where ever he goes, but why has he not gotten a chance before now? He is 47, not 37 where it would make sense that he is climbing. He seems to be stagnated. At Northwestern he was ***. HC, so he is thought of pretty highly, but he did not get that job.

to find an OC or DC?
and I totally agree. This could also confirm that Wilson is coming. The reason I say that is because Wilson might want to stay with his team through the bowl game. After all it is the National Championship. Byrd might be doing some of the work for him. I'm sure if that's the case, Wilson is in agreement with him. I mean you got to think that Wilson would want his own guy. Plus the great one at SC could be on his way out next year if they don't perform better and Ellis might see the writing on the wall and think hear is a good opportunity to get job security for a few more years and a pay raise. On the other side his wife might say hell no I won't go!

But then again my post may be all rumbish.

I doesn't not surprise me he turned us down. Maybe he's waiting on TAMU? Kelly was the longest shot of all our contacts, so I doubt Petersen was a factor. I'm glad to see the retreads were never seriously considered.
