I realize this may be unpopular, but I'm OK with Mullen leaving.

He's done a great job, no doubt, and my first choice would be to keep him to see how far he could take us. But if he leaves, OK, we'll find another coach. Maybe it's Brady Hoke or Kyle Whittingham or Chris Petersen or maybe we jump on the Gus Malzahn wagon and give him his first HC job. We're clearly a more desirable job now than we were when he hired Dan, and I think we'll attract a deeper and better pool this time around. It's up to us (Scott) to get it right again.

I know this won't change all the "17 17 17" and "time to panic" crowd. I just don't see the need for that.

If it happens, life goes on. Happy to have a coach being hired away vs. fired. Maybe we can continue this trend until we are the one that would hire a big name coach away from someone else.

one more point to add is, I feel like Mississippi State is in great hands with the President and AD on the same page and fighting for MSU...

They won't let dan go easily, but scott was step for step with Byrne in the hiring process ... Dan Mullen is a good coach, could be great... but there are others just as capable.

no need to panic.
larry isn't here...

NYD Bowl, Mullen debunked the coaching graveyard myth, incredible momentum with the fanbase, and a facillity enhancement plan.

As DS said and was quoted, without credit from Gene "this ain't your daddy's MSU". We will make a good hire.

He has done more for our program than anyone in the past 10 years. People need to remember that we don't have the same administration. I totally believe they are going to go through their due diligence to hire and maintain great staffs for all our programs, and hold them accountable if they don't do their job. We are set up to be pretty good next year and depending on the hire this recruiting class can make us relevant for a while longer. We are an attractive place to be if Mullen leaves, and I think any of the names mentioned such as Malzahln or whoever will be fine. We just gotta remember that LT is not calling the shots any more.

if he goes, he goes.

His body of work is very limited, so maybe he's not first on the list. Foley may look for somebody with more of a proven record, and I doubt he gets told no by whoever his first choice is.

The same thing is said by every coaching change every season. When Crooms got canned we were gonna lose all of his guys too. Somehow Mullen kept them. Hire the right guy and we'll keep 90% of what we have and pick up 2-3 more that get caught up in the excitement of a new coach.

when Hawkins moved on they promoted Peterson. Mullen's laid a great foundation we just need to make sure the next guy keeps it rolling in the right direction.

Not saying that will happen in our case, but I do think Diaz has a lot of potential as a head coach.

Time will tell I guess.

I just worry about this year's recruiting class. I see it falling apart if Dan bolts. That is my biggest worry.

That needed to be said, and I agree with you. Mullen has shown this fanbase again that winning is something that can and should happen at Mississippi State University. When we hired him, we knew we inherited the risk that a young would leave for a more prestigious job. That job is Florida.

Obviously, if UF offers him, he's gone. But we don't know that he'd be UF's first choice.

But if he does leave, you're right. We're in the best position to make a good hire that we've ever been in. Dan's got the program headed in the right direction and we've got good people in place to make the next hire in Stricklin and Keenum. I'm not panicking even if he does leave. And you're right about us not losing many recruits, assuming we do make a good hire, which I think we will. If Dan goes to Florida, he's not going to be taking many (if any) recruits with him. And I'm not too worried about anybody else being able to steal many either.

Agree. And we would need someone that still brings excitement and can continue to unify the fanbase. Any of those names would work. I don't care about the TSUN stuff as much as the fact that we need to continue with a young mind that understands how the game works in this era and keeps butts in the seats.

I just don't see how a 100 foot picture of Hudspeth hanging off the upper deck would do that. With the names that you've given I would hope, like you, that the rest of the MSU fans can get beyond this promote from within mentality.

Oh, you would be surprised. Go back and look at some posts from that time period. People actually thought it was possible that firing Crooms would hurt us with that year's class. Mullen kept everyone of note I believe and added other excellent ones to it.

but I know most folks on here were so euphoric about getting a new coach that the impact on recruiting was not really of much concern.

Byrne was instrumental in keeping that class together. He called recruits during the transition period telling themto stick with us. Stricklin needs to have rolodex in hand should this happen.**</p>
