Dude left our school to go cash checks at his alma mater's biggest rival. As much as I love money, I'd never take the AD job at Ole Miss. I like what Greg Byrne did here, but after considering his decision to leave in that light, it made it easier to move on and click "unfollow" without hesitation.

nothing but red desert. I felt like I was on Mars or something. It was cool and unique for about the first 15 minutes... but i thought it was hell on earth for the entire rest of the drive (sans that first 15 minutes of course). Awful...awful place, never ever going back.

I find the desert interesting for a brief time, mostly because it is so different. ThenI think about people living there, and I just can't fathom why they would want to do that.

maybe some people are more career oriented than you or maybe they like being close to a place they are familiar with. who knows? but turning down a good job because of rivalry is a bit crazy to me.

You would work for Ole Miss if the opportunity presented itself and the pay was considerably higher than you make now (had to sweeten it a little since I am sure Byrne got an increase)

and subsequently run that 17er into the ground as much as I could.

Then, after I was fired, I'd come out and explain what I did to state fans and I'd get a statue built of me.

I can't imagine the fanbase being okay with it. Maybe I'm just reading too much into the MSU/UM rivalry, but I think a lot of old-timers would be vehemently against hiring a former student/fan of MSU to lead the athletic department.

I still can't believe UA did it without catching hell, but I don't know the nature of their rivalry at all.

/Maybe that question should be our first in--in-thread-buy/sell--buy/sell.

when Keenum was up for president one of the finalists was a MSU graduate with his PhD but he had worked for OM for over a decade in his career. he also had season tickets to OM football. the fanbase was in an uproar that he could end up being President of MSU. just from that knowledge I'd say it is unlikely that MSU would hire an OM grad to run the AD. (i know that I am likely comparing apples to oranges but so be it)

...being mid-career in my position (which is nontenured) and changing over to what would be a tenure track publish-or-perish position at Ole Miss wouldn't be all that fun I would think.

Edit to add: And I would also be opposed to working at other universities (e.g., MSU, USM, LSU, and other larger universities) for the same reason.
