I thought you could build a program with just MS talent.

That was the saying for years. With all the talent that MS produces, was it not always said that if one school got it all then they would be pretty tough to beat? Funny now that MSU has slam dunked all the recruits in MS, how many Ole Miss fans are now saying that you have to go out of state to build a real program. Which is it?

Honestly, if we had one big university like Nebraska or Arkansas, or if one cleaned up every year on Mississippi talent, I think we would be about like Arkansas. For the record, I consider Arkansas to have a "good" program, and Southern Cal to have an "excellent" program.

I think today State lines mean less than before. It is easier to travel, and info is much easier to come by. I really don't think it matters that much where your players are from as long as they are good and the coaches know what they are doing. Our lineup last year was from all over and they were pretty bad *** by the time all was said and done. I think you could do well if you cleaned up consistently in State, but that doesn't happen. I do think there is merit to the idea that you have to go out of State due to the piss poor academic performance of MS athletes.

It is easier to get a 4 star recruit in your own state than to draw one from another unless you are a power program. I think you can fill gaps with out of staters and get some lower ranked recruits but if Tyler Russell or Chad Bumphis were from Georgia or Texas then there is no way they would be in Starkville next year.

that if we had one state school, we would have an easier time keeping Bama and LSU from taking players in Ms.

And along with that, if we had one really good program, we might be able to attract some players from Georgia or whereever. There are a lot of things that we just don't know.

...for either OM or MSU to use in-state players exclusively to build a consistent Top 25 program.

When at least 2 of MSU top signees don't qualify, let that be a reminder why you can't use MS players only to build a consistent Top 25 program.

These coaches @ OM & MSU rarely have a Plan B in case their top recruits don't qualify.

All their Plan B's are committed to USM.

I would wager that neither would Cameron Lawrence...

The idea is to get the best players from MS and not succomb to the pressure to take the mediocre or below average players....and then supplement your class with out of state players, whether they are filling holes or are star players.

Some of the best players from Ole Miss' team this year were MS players (PJerry, JJerry, Eason, Walker, Sanford, Tillman, etc.) but a majority were from out of state (McCluster, Snead, Hardy, Oher, Laurent, Bolden, Cornell, KLewis, Green, and on and on).

Memphis players don't count as out of state at Ole Miss. It might as well be in Miss.

So I would consider Oher and Hardy as basically "in state."

I can't see any way to classify them as anything above slightly better than average today.

If the state of MS had one school, we'd probably be very similar to LSU. You simply cannot underestimate how devoid of talent the state of Arkansas is. If we had one university, you'd most likely be able to combine State and umiss' classes every year. I can't think of a year since I've been following recruiting that a combination of both classes would not be ranked in the top 15 in the country.

As far as Ronnie's argument about grades.... one school would make that a non-issue. Keep in mind that we are the ONLY state in the union that uses the grading scale that we do and we only have a few casualties every year. Think about it... a 69 is a passing grade in every state in the union besides Mississippi. Hell, it'd ALMOST be a "C"! It's an "F" in MS.

You hit it dead on. Years ago you could get a Powe in without three years delay and get him in basket weaving classes and keep them eligible. Both MSU and UM did it regularly. Now, however, you can't afford to rely on some of the 4 and 5 stars from Mississippi to graduate from school, much less clear the NCAA. We'll always fight over recruits, but both schools are ultimately going to go to Florida and Texas most years to fill out classes. MSU has apparently had the bumper year of in state recruits this year, but I'm guessing that in the future Mullen will be looking out of state as well.

We beat you in Novermber 45-0. We just won the Cotton Bowl. We are a preseason top 10 team in basically every preseason poll that has come out. Congratulations on your instate recruiting success. I think we will get by though.

You also must look at your needs. You can't just go and sign the CL Dandy Dozen if your not in need of the position that they play. I think you need to do well overall in your home state but if the better talent is in your surrounding states then that's where you go. I personally don't base OLE MISS's class as a success or failure based on the number from the Dandy Dozen they sign, hell Deuce was 9th his senior year and I think we know how he turned out. Dexter was a 2 star, Hardy was a 3 star so you can't go by stars either. As fans we can only hope that our head coach can evaluate talent and get that talent to sign with our program. Needless to say I'm confident in Houston Nutt's ability in that regard.
