You are nearing the latter part of your career. You coach a team that is in the midst of a rebuilding project. You're breaking in a new QB and the defense is extremely thin, but the O-Line is solid and the running game should be good. There is a foundation tobuild on but you'd have tototally 100%reinvest your heart and soul into your job to pull out agreat season.

You are getting a pretty good salary of almost 3 Million a year and you have 4 years left on your contract. However your contract is set up with incentives that actually pay out better for being fired or not having your contract renewed. 6 Million for being fired or 2 Million for not having the contract extened. But you only would receive 600k for having a perfect season.

I don't mean this as a flame thread at all, I'm curious if there is some point financially that someone would just tank it and take the payout? I'm not suggesting Nutt will but asking what would you do if you were in his shoes?

competitive guy and takes alot of pride in himself and his teams. With that said, he sure has a nice soft landing awaiting him no matter what.

and let the chips fall. Lot of people, his assistants for example, depend on him to do his best. And I'm sure that's what he'll do.

There's a lot more to it than money. Pride, competitive spirit, and friends livelihoods all are in the balance.

Personally I'd find it hard to keep up the level of intensity needed to suceed in the SEC as a head coach if I knew that I would get paid about the same for 2 poor performing years and a termination as 4 good years. Especially when you are talking in the millions of dollars.

But that's why I'm not a head coach I guess.

..I don't see the whole Houston Nutt thing ending well.

The UPig procrastinators have been amazingly accurate in predicting what havoc Nutt would ultimately wreak on the University of Mississippi football program.

I'm not saying that they will win 10 games, but 6 is not unreasonable. Nutt is a very good coach when he actually pays attention to what is going on. No doubt he will be thin, but he has enough young talent coming in (assuming they make it and stick around) to supplement what he already has. Nutt can manage with the running game. He has put some assistants in place that will help on the defensive side of the ball. They should be able to win their out-of-conference games plus two of Vandy, AU, and Kentucky.

If I were him I would be looking for a job in a state where he has more resources and less competition. MSU is not going to let up and there is not a lot to go around in the state. While they appear to be winning the battle on rivals and scout, it is obvious who is getting the better classes.

Of course, UM may be his dream job. All he has to do is put together the occasional good season and he gets to make millions of dollars and hang out on his ranch.

..it's really hard to imagine how bad they are going to be.

I always find it ironic the one place in the universe where U of M football can always count on to find a little positive spin & reflective understanding, is on this board.

1. There is absolutely no objective reason to believe they will be better than last year: lost QB, lost top WR, lost entire DL that really was not very good and had key losses on an already ****** secondary. If the guys backing up the DL and the secondary could not beat out the clowns they rolled out there last year, the defense could be worse.

2. Who in the hell would want Houston Nutt right now as a HC?

if they can't beat a decent (but not great) BYU team at the start of the season, they might win 4 games. They could still beat BYU and only win 5, but they have to beat BYU to have any shot at winning 6, which should make HDN COTY if that were to happen.
