in terms of being a legitimate sport to me, but this sounds like MSU grabbed some kids off the street and threw a team together in about a week and a half. I wouldn't feel bad if this was against Michigan or Minnesota, but Arkansas? I don't remember them as being an ice hockey powerhouse.

They are probably like us back when we used to play rugby. We sucked, but we had a hell of a lot of fun.

My question is, where do they practice?

to say it isn't a legitimate sport. Maybe you don't like it - nothing wrong with that. But to say it isn't a legitimate sport is dumb.

it's a gimmick, not a real sport. I'm not saying that hockey players aren't tough, skilled, or that they're not as athletic as people that play any other sport. I'm just saying that the game itself doesn't belong in the same realm as football, basketball, or baseball.

If someone decided today to strap skate boards on people's chests, roll around a court, and throw balls into opposite nets, that would be as legitimate as ice hockey.

However, when the sport's most heralded league in the world has been on the brink of folding numerous times due to utter lack of interest and support, I must not be the only one of this opinion.

I think everything they do happens in Tupelo. Their practices and games are all there unless they are on the road.

You told DCD it was a "gimmick", which is ridiculous. Now you're telling me it isn't legitimate because it isn't well supported. Which is it? Just because the sport is very regionalized and the NHL is poorly run doesn't mean it isn't a legitimate sport. It's like you're comparing it to poker or a Scrabble tournament.

By the way, the NHL set an all-time attendance record last year, so the support is returning. The lockout killed it for the casual fan. The league is terribly run, but that doesn't delegitimize it as an actual sport. Try going to Detroit or Chicago or Toronto and saying that. I'm sure some igoramuses in the Northeast don't think college football is "legit" either.

You are out of your mind. Having played organized football, basketball, and ice hockey I can say with confidence that ice hockey is the most athletic sport there is. And it would dominate popularity if the US climate were more conducive to ice skating.

Tampa was 8th in the league in avg home attendance last year, so I don't think it's all because of the climate (although that does factor in, for sure). I think the main problem is that the NHL does a horrendous job of marketing the game to the public. I think Seinfeld just can't distinguish between not liking a sport and having to justify his dislike by trashing it with idiotic arguments. Anyone comparing hockey to rolling around on skateboards throwing a ball is either ignorant or stupid.

How would you market the sport, Mr Marketing Guru? It could simply be that people don't like watching it and won't no matter how much you try and sell it. Kind of like that ESPN cell phone the Worldwide leader was hawking a couple of years ago.

I'm just giving various reasons why I don't find the sport legitimate. Hell, maybe even "legitimate" isn't the right word to use because it's obviously bringing out the hormones in a lot of you. But I can tell you that if the free world had to choose between keeping poker, scrabble, or hockey around, I can guarantee what would lose in a landslide.

you'll see that I never said that hockey players aren't skilled or athletic.

And it would dominate popularity if the US climate were more conducive to ice skating.
The majority of the US climate is extremely conducive to soccer. As poorly as it has faired in terms of popularity, it leaves me with little belief that it would be any different for hockey.

Hockey would be popular because he has all of the elements that make other sports popular - speed, physicality, finesse, the x-factor (goalie), etc.

The NHL is popular in NHL cities. Locals pay attention because its a local team and then they notice that ice hockey is a great sport. But the popularity doesn't go beyond that because there is no recreational interest in it (climate). Sure there are rinks around, but its not like people can strap on skates and go skating outside. Heck, in Canada is it common for people to build mini-rinks in their backyard. put some 2x4's in a big rectangle, layer with plastic, water....ice rink.

No. "Legitimate" isn't the right word because it makes you look like a moron. Hockey is very much a sport. To say otherwise shows a lack of intelligence.

I have no way of proving you wrong either until we encounter an arctic freeze across the country.

However, I find it funny how folks on this board speak of how popular hockey is in certain regions, yet I've lived in two alleged hockey hotbeds(Michigan and Raleigh, NC the year the Canes won the Cup) and both hockey teams came in a distant last place in terms of popularity between college football, college basketball, and hockey.

Regardless, I understand that there are fans of the game and I respect that. It's just something I'll never get.

Considering it has been an official league (1917) longer than the NBA (1946) and NFL (1920) I would think that alone makes it just as "legitimate" as any other league. Just because you don't like the sport (or understand it, whichever it is--possibly both) does not make it any less legit. For instance, I don't know dick about cricket but since it is the most 2nd popular sport in the world behind soccer, I think it is a pretty "legitimate" sport. Just because I don't understand it, does not make it any less of a sport.

Side note, if you can start this skateboard/wheels on chest/throwing balls into a net sport..let me know. Sounds badass. Maybe together we can make a legitimate sport together and we can suppress and mock anyone who does not understand it.

The first appearance of the "hormone" or "estrogen" posts. And you're right - legitimate is very much the wrong word to use. If you don't like hockey, fine. But to say it isn't a sport is preposterous. Because, you know, that's what "legitimate" means.

Also this:
But I can tell you that if the free world had to choose between keeping poker, scrabble, or hockey around, I can guarantee what would lose in a landslide.
is one of the stupidest things I have ever read.

is someone like yourself and about five others in this thread that can seem to only defend the sport by saying "dubmass", "your and idiot", or calling a post idiotic. I may completely disagree with Flabloser, but at least he actually supports his side of the argument rather than hurling pointless internet insults. Jesus

Good lord, give 'em a break, they just started playing this fall. It's a club sport formed by some of the students that used to play street hockey here in Starkville and wanted to play ice hockey. Tupelo isn't available year-round to practice in and Jackson didn't have anything available so they were practicing in Pelham (Birmingham), but now they're practicing on the weekends in Decatur, Alabama. Yes, they drive all the way to Decatur from Starkville to practice.
