I’m starting to get concerned that we are fixing to have hundreds of shelters housing thousands of people in the EXACT area with some of the lowest vaxx rates and highest infected rates. All sharing limited space, with limited facilities, and all breathing the same air with subpar ventilation. This thing could become Hurricane Corona, the super spreader of all super spreaders. I’m not concerned about myself, I’m 300 miles from the coast. But I love this state and it’s people. That’s who I’m concerned for. My dad was one of the first crews to drive 8 hours to help with the cleanup of Waveland bc he’s a magician with a chainsaw and he doesn’t get emotional. He could barely talk about it when he got back.

I don’t want to see these people lose every possession they have. I definitely don’t want them to lose everything they have and then get forced to a shelter where they lose their life.

What does Hurricanes cause. Injuries. What do we already not have? Hospital beds. A bad problem just got worse. Now if there is a spike from this bc of overcrowding, where are those folks going to go?

This very well could be the perfect storm.

Again, I hope I’m wrong. But some leaders really need to be thinking about these things. I would call the president and see if he can send that Mercy ship that Cuomo asked for then never used. Park that thing in Miami until the gulf is safer. Then move some of the stable patients to it so the more acute injuries can get the emergency care they’re going to need. The ship could also then be used as temporary shelter to keep the land shelters from getting over run for folks that don’t have a home to go back to.

Think of the health hazard the super dome almost became and how miserable those people had to be. What if we’d had that ship lag behind Katrina where it could have made a lot of folks more comfortable and they could have a little dignity as they have facilities for showers instead of having to lay in their filth that follows any human that can’t bathe. If it hits Houston the ship can be there in a half a day. If it hits Mobile, a few hours away. But tens of thousands are going to need shelters before next week is over and that ship is the easiest and safest option.


Update, and I never really thought this would happen. I have a cousin that used to work with Haley Barbour. She passed it to state Rep. Jim Ford, and he passed it Tate Reeves. Nothing may come of it but I never thought a post I made on SPS would get passed to Tate Reeves.

If I remember correctly, Katrina was expected to hit New Orleans directly (there were warnings about high rise buildings collapsing and other dire fears) but it shifted east at the last minute making landfall in Mississippi, and the wind speed dropped pretty dramatically before landfall. It still had Cat 5 storm surge but Cat 3 winds. Camille, on the other hand, was a full bore Cat 5 all the way in, with sustained winds estimated at 190 and gusts >230. Katrina was infamous mostly for New Orleans flooding. Had Camille been on the same track that Katrina took it would have been a much, much worse situation in New Orleans. Camille was devastating, with the impact softened only by the Gulf coast being a lot less populated than now.

Great idea but not logistically feasible. Presently the USNS Mercy is tied up in San Diego.
