Re: FWIW....Not that there's much interest anymore in Bumphis,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He has always been about the 10th WR on our list and we are only taking four. You have to recruit about ten... in case six out of the first nine go elsewhere.
This is straight from our coaches.... no conjecture on my part. We just were not that impressed when he came to camp this summer.
That's why we have slow played him, but have not recruited him very hard at all.

Chad has always been a "Plan B" recruit for OM, Bama, and UF. State was his only "commitable offer" OU just lost a recruit, so they are apparently offering him as their "Plan B".

So now.... maybe he has two offers.

wants Bumphis but Reb fans aren't impressed. This tool probably thinks Rueben Randle and Marlon Brown are private commits.

was a top target at OM, no question. That was right up until Korvic Neat committed. Call me whatever you want but that's true. That's not saying Neat was "higher" on the board or a better player. Just saying the staff had them as interchangeable. One or the other.

The only thing I said is that there are definitely times when the coaches have a highly rated guy low on their board so it's definitely possible that Bumphis may not have been high on our board. It's also possible he was really high on our want list though. The only thing I said about it is that none of these posters on the Spirit, or any of the posters on here have a clue where Bumphis was on our coaches' board.

Maybe he was our top WR target. Maybe he was 10th on our list of WRs. Either way, those guys don't know, and neither do you.

The only thing we do know is that he's not signing with Ole Miss whether we wanted him badly or not. And whether he was our top WR priority or way down our list doesn't change how good he is.

and for that matter, if Ole Miss or anybody else in the SEC has any 4-star leftovers they're "not interested" in, we'll be happy to have those as well.

I just went and watched video on both. I also looked at their "camp" statistics. Neat is listed at 5-9 170 and as running a 4.5. He is a 3 star ranked down about #77 in WR. Bumphis is listed on Scout as 5-10 193 and running a 4.4. In the video Neat played tailback and also caught passes out of the backfield. He had an excellent offensive line, because most of his lengthy runs were between the tackles with him not being touched. He showed good cut back ability. At this point in time, he is not as fast, nor as good in open space as Chad Bumphis. Can he be another Dexter McCluster? Give him a few years and good conditioning and weight training, and he might. As far as impact is concerned, I think Neat is at least a redshirt year +1 away from being a contributor. Chad Bumphis, on the other hand, has a Division 1A body already at 190+, plus he has both speed and hands. He will contribute out the gate.

Neat is definitely redshirting, as Bumphis likely would have as well had he come to Ole Miss. Dexter will be a senior this year, and we likely won't need return men, RBs, or WRs immediately this coming fall, since those are positions where we have some depth returning. I expect most any WR or RB we sign will be redshirting this year.

At MSU, Bumphis will likely play some his first year, because you guys need more speed in your skill positions to run Mullen's offense.

...on all points. I think Chad signs with us, and I think he has a chance to start as a true freshman. We only have 3 WR returning with any PT, and the best, McRae is recovering from a badly broken leg.

Yep, plus if Mullen does plan on running something similar to what was run at Utah and Florida under Meyer, then you're going to need some speed RB/WR types to run that offense. Bumphis fits that mold.

Edited to add: I think Bumphis can play that Demps/Rainey/James/Harvin role for Mullen, except that he'll have to be a poor-man's version since he doesn't quite have the 4.2 speed that those guys carry.

We took Neat's commitment because we didn't get Bumphis. Anyone that says we backed off of Chad is just making excuses. We weren't going to get him, so we went on to the next guy. There was no point wasting time on a player that wasn't interested.

Great thread...

Xenomorph mentioned something needing archiving and Ronny/Bark/Pariah was the first responder. And Backer almost broke into one of his old talent evaluations. It almost reminds one of the pasture circa 2000.

..of this thread.

The guy who writes conspiracy theory recruiting novels on the sixpack board & the guy who swore there would be national race riots when Croom was let go is really the guy this thread needs as the proverbial cherry on top.

Hope that works out for you. I personally find Neat and Bumphis to be fairly evenly-matched as a poster said earlier. I think both are talented. And yes I believe Bumphis to be more D-I ready at this stage in both players' development. He's a great fit for MSU and will do well there. Meanwhile, we don't need immediate contributors so much and Neat will have time to mature physically during a redshirt year before he's called upon to be a contributor. I think both State and Ole Miss did well at that "small, quick receiver" spot.
