Can someone explain to me in what instance a ground can cause a fumble? I'm at a loss. The QB's knee did not hit the ground, but the ball did as he was holding it. Once the football touches the ground, isn't the play dead?

hitting the ground. IE, it's not a fumble when it pops out as you are slammed down. But if the ball hits the ground before any part of your body, that is completely a fumble.
