... why did Mullin continue to recruit Cam after knowing he was being shopped around? Why didn't MSU back away?<div style="background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 191); border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; height: auto; line-height: normal; text-align: left; width: auto; direction: ltr; z-index: 99995; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; "></div>

Are you saying Mullin and MSU backed away before Cam committed to Auburn?

The question you're asking assumes the following:

Someone claiming to represent Newton said we could have him for $180,000. When our athletic department heard that, we let the SEC know what happened to cover our ***.

So, why would that prevent us from continuing to cleanly recruit Newton? I really don't get the point when people ask this question.

Mullen was resigned to the fact that we were probably not getting Newton when he started crawfishing the week after the egg bowl. I have a feeling that Mullen and Cecil had their meetingwhen Cecil was in town for the egg bowland that is when Cecil first made his demands for cash.

what's wrong with continuing to recruit someone the right way? this idiotic argument just keeps coming up

you recruit him the right way, and if he signs with us, it says he has good character and he did nothing wrong and accepted no money

MSU as stated to the SEC main office, would continue to recruit $Cam Newton 6-6 250K exactly like any other recruit. We could continue to recruit this guy, without penalty because if he would have chosen MSU, the SEC already knows we would not have paid him. Of course Auburn, TN and OK would have blown their whistles about them being approached about the 180K-250K. We would be under question, but the SEC would already have heard our stance prior to Cam's selection. Therefore its easier to explain that we didn't pay him.

Are you saying Mullen and MSU continued trying to convince Cecil Newton to have his son sign with the Bulldogs after the $180,000 offer was put on the table (or under the table as the case may be?)
