If Cam Newton comes to MSU, what does Relf do?

I've been wondering what the effect would be if Cam came. What do you think?

that the one position we may not sign this year is TE. If he knows that Newton is coming he may be anticipating moving Relf there and also using him in the "Dual option" he and Meyer love so much. The TE in this offense lines up in the back field a lot also.

I have not seen either. I say give him some bigger pads and put in at running back.

that's a good point.. i forgot about Mullen saying he's not taking a TE in this class.. maybe he knows something we don't.

We will replace Relf at QB... not sure if it is Newton or a HS QB...
I wouldn't be surprised if Newton signs we still take another QB and RS him

My guess is be a situational guy. Use him in a lot of gimmicky plays as a part qb, part tb/hb/te

1. Relf will not be a RB. You people do realize that his success on the ground is by virtue of the fact that he IS THE QUARTERBACK. Meaning, among other things, that there is another blocker on the play, more misdirection, etc. He is not exceptionally quick or fast. He is strong and he is a good runner. I think he has good vision, but to say that he would be a success at RB is a pretty big stretch. To say he will be like Brandon Jacobs is just dumb.

2. I feel the same applies to TE. We do a lot of blocking with our TE's. We don't know if he can catch the ball. We don't know if he can block. We don't know if he can run routes. All we really know is that he is big and strong and an above average straight-line runner.

I think he either stays at State and competes at QB or transfers. I would say he could be a situational guy, but the problem with that is that Cam Newton does the situational things that Relf does (i.e. run the football) just as good (or better) than Relf does. I think Newton is essentially going to be a 6'6 cross-breed of Relf and T. Russell. He may not throw it as well as Russell, and you know what, he might not even run it as well as Relf (although he probably does), but he will do both effectively and do it carrying a 6'6 frame and 240 lbs behind him.

I agree with you, that there are a lot of question marks IF we moved him to WR/TE/RB full time. But that's not going to happen in the sense that he will be an every down guy.

We do know that he has some strengths, and some unknowns. We do know that he is a good athlete, and I do think that we should in the spring at least try some things with him and see what works and what doesn't. I agree that he is not an every down guy, but with Green at TE, and the RB's like Ballard, Conner, and Perkins, and maybe Elliot, he doesn't have to be. He doesn't have to master every nuance of the TE position to run a seam route on occasion.

I thnk what makes him valuable more than anything is the threat that he may throw a pass, and has a good enough arm to actually do it. The threat of having Newton and Relf in the same formation at the same time is at least something for the oppostion to worry about. I also think that we could occasionally hand it off to him and he could get some yards. He could also possibly catch a screen pass or swing pass. We just have to figure out what he can and can't do and use what he can do.

He isn't as fast or slippery as McCluster, but his is pretty fast and runs the ball well. He's got good forward lean and gets yards after contact. Not an every down RB. So I see him in that 3rd down or RB/WR hybrid role. Some wildcat action, some RB, some slot receiver.

On the other hand, Mullen has said repeatedly he'd like a bunch of WR's on the roster. Maybe he converts to WR. Some size and strength at WR would be a nice change for us.
