And I have an employee that refuses to do what he was hired to do, do I have the right to fire him for "just cause?"
Yes, but I’m confident the language in the contract wouldn’t allow that. Without reviewing and my law degree, I’ll assume this was written to protect the employee and not the employer. Barnhart got played by Cal because of the noise that he was interested in UCLA. Wish Barnhart had called his bluff and let him go back then…

Cal has the exact same language as every other college coach in the NCAA when it comes to being fired for cause. Stop playing dumb.

It does not really matter what us peasants think about his contract as an employee unfortunately. The rich men with money bags...they matter. If they clap enough to Barnie then maybe we are talking but if not, more of the same nonsense I'm afraid.

"For cause" is implied to mean unethical/immoral transgressions, cheating etc.

The reality is any athletics department CAN use it to justify firing a coach for cause by twisting it, if they chose to. Look no further than the Brian Harsin saga at Auburn this offseason.

For us, the reality is the buyout is the hindrance. Trying to use the Sharpe situation or Cal putting kids NBA dreams over UKs ambitions isn't gonna hold up. I don't necessarily disagree with you OP....Cal has flat put stated he doesn't care about the SEC tournament, the championships, etc.. his mission is to put kids in the NBA. But there's zero way this would ever get traction.

It would depend on the terms of his contract. He isn't an 'at will' employee.
Why isn't there a performance clause included in coaches contracts? So simple to do. Require a certain % winning and making certain levels in NCAAT after say 5 years. I know why. It is educators using someone else's money. And I am a retired educator.

That and very few if any top coaches would ever agree to it.

The UK brand is worth more today than it was when John Calipari took over. That's all that matters to JMI, Mitch etc. Now if people stop watching the games (won't happen) or completely stop going to the games (probably won't happen except for small teams) then nothing will ever change until Calipari is ready to go. It is what it is. TV ratings pay the bills now also, not fans in the stands.

It’s harder to get fired when you work for state or local governments in general. I work for my local PD. They can’t just fire me just because they don’t like me or I make a simple mistake. I have certain rights guaranteed before I am ever terminated. Even if you commit murder you still go through the same process albeit expedited very quickly. We actually had an officer kill his pregnant side piece a couple of months ago. The department still had to go through the process to terminate the employment. He was placed on paid administrative leave and terminated by the next day.

Not miss the tourney twice in a 8 year span and at the very least win a 1st round game.....that is at the very least
Is that part of a written requirement in his contract, or is that a fan requirement? Not trying to argue, just want to point out that I'd think the agreement he has with UK isn't that specific with regards to performance expectations. Most likely it doesn't say much of anything except "for cause", but then how the heck is that even defined?

Does UK have a documented list of "failures" or actions that would clearly meet a "for cause" justification for firing? If not, I'm sure Rafters folks would be up to the task of creating a very good list of expectations!

A move like OP is suggesting is the fastest way to not being able to land a decent coach for a long *** time. Nobody worth a damn would take that risk.
BS. There are always good coaches ready to take the job regardless.

To this day the worst take on this board. We’ve heard it for over 2O years and it hasn’t been true yet because It’s stupid. Who in their right mind would think that a sports Greatest program of all Time would have trouble landing a top coach because the guy before him couldn’t hold up. This board has ran with that nonsense for too damn long. The The problem with getting rid C3 for cause (not performing his duties as UK coach is quite easy to understand. Some of you need to go back to his words, which we considered to be a coach speak at the Time, and you’ll quickly understand it’s not possible.

Calipari said many times before the contract was signed that he is no longer in this for winning or championships or the University of Kentucky.I can cite as many videos as anyone wants that show when he was given the lifetime deal his bosses were already well aware that he was no longer in this for winning at UK. That’s case closed.

You say so boss. Using the cause provision would get the university sued and they’d lose and it would be a big deal. It would make the job toxic on multiple levels.

How many teams received bids in the NCAAT?

He went 13 and 13 one year. That isn't getting in any year, just like 9 and 16.

And did Joe b lose his best player to a torn acl like in 2013 with Noel? Because everyone knows that team is in with him even if same outcome after his injury record wise. One of joe bs nit teams was the year after 1978 title, very similar to 2013 after 2012 title.

People can move the goal posts all you want. Joe b gets a pass because he was a ky guy. I have said calipari needs to go yesterday. I'm done but I'm not gonna cherry pick uk basketball history and ignore the numerous warts of hall and Smith. People have been pumping them up to tear calipari down the last week. Be consistent. All I ask.
