What is most indicative of the end of football (HS, College and Pro) is the decline in participation. Since 2008, there has been just about a 40% reduction in boys playing football in the 6-12 age group. Those boys are bow playing baseball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, etc. Yes, some will come back to football in HS, but the decline each year in the young age group continues to increase. Smaller schools (rural) will likely see the sport dropped or begin combining programs with other local smaller schools. Drip by drip, the sport will die in years to come as we know it. Almost becoming an olympic type sport. With Football and sport only HSs providing it as an opportunity to those that qualify and are interested. The costs are too great, liability now sky high, and mom and dad steering their sons to other sport opportunities.
