If it wasn't over already, these coaching changes have signaled the end of CFB

Once coaches whose teams are in the midst of the CFB "playoff" discussion leave for other jobs before the season is over, we may as well not even have a sport anymore. Why are these jokers even coaches, if the potential to win a championship matters so little to them? I get that programs want their coaches in place before the early signing period, but this is really bad for the future of the sport.

I would disagree - what this signals to me is that, winning a National Championship means *so much* to them (let's say Riley and Kelly for now) that they're willing to leave elite, blueblood programs for a shot at winning one. In Kelly's example, he must believe a) ND isn't making the playoff so move now, finish up recruiting at LSU, and get a head start on building my program or b) even if ND does make they playoff, they're gonna get trucked and he's seen enough of that to know he doesn't like it. In Riley's instance, I don't blame him one bit. USC is basically Alabama in Los Angeles. He can recruit nationally and locally and build a powerhouse whose only impediment to the CFP is maybe Oregon (and once Cali kids stop going there to go to USC, it'll be over for them too).

The only potential move the NCAA could make to help level the playing field is to allow more teams in the CFP. Limiting it to four has made the race to the top of the pyramid even crazier (and the number of elite recruits is less spread out than ever). Teams have to have a shot at a NC for players to consider them; right now, that pool is about eight schools. If you open the playoff to eight teams, schools can sell more opportunity for a NC.

Yeah, people have been saying CFB is "over" for a long time - yet it still survives and adapts. It is what it is.

Riley wanted nothing to do with coaching in the SEC. He liked his easy path to the playoffs practically every year. He does not need great facilities to lure players to USC. He will get QBs just because of his success with Mayfield and Murray plus his work with Hurst. Caleb Williams will follow him to USC. Kelly leaving ND's easy path to the playoffs has to do with the similar fight that Franklin has dealt with at Penn State. ND facilities need improvements. Franklin has won those fights to get upgrades. Notre Dame is too bull headed thinking they are Notre Dame and that is all the need. I wonder if the 8 teams playoff might be part of Kelly's thinking going to LSU. Expanded playoffs means 2 SEC teams will be in the playoffs every year. The second SEC team will have a much better shot in the playoffs than Notre Dame based on how they have been destroyed.

I LOVE USC and I’m pumped @bout m6 new coach. I LOVE Brian Kelly and I HATE UGA and BAMA. I’m pretty sure LSU is gonna truck the SEC as Saban heads to retirement. LSU is now my SEC team and I can finally bring a real rooting interest to the satan Main Board. I love this coaching shake up. And if this upsets you, wait til 5 announces he’s sitting out the bowl game lol

And this is why the signing period was February. Moving it to December, caused this issue.

Two SEC teams in an 8 team playoff ? More like 3 and dare i say 4 . OU and UT to the SEC is turning into a CFB panic with conferences and coaches. They see the writing on the wall.

The NIL situation !! These greedy coaches are saying " hold my beer"

If they took a pay cut, or received about the same salary, when moving to a new team, I might buy this ... but, as is, it's all about the benjamins. "Winning a National Championship" only matters insomuch as it results in more money.

Look, it's really simple, Kelly knew he had squeezed all that he could out of Notre Dame. They play a cupcake schedule, with no conference championship game, which allows them to slither into playoffs on occasion only to be gob-stomped by the elite teams. He knows he has a tough time recruiting the best of the best because of Notre Dame's (wink-wink) academic requirements, and he knows that his insufferable fan base of slobbering fools only remembers when Notre Dame dominated the football world with 5'10" white guys and Rudy-wannabes.

What is most indicative of the end of football (HS, College and Pro) is the decline in participation. Since 2008, there has been just about a 40% reduction in boys playing football in the 6-12 age group. Those boys are bow playing baseball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, etc. Yes, some will come back to football in HS, but the decline each year in the young age group continues to increase. Smaller schools (rural) will likely see the sport dropped or begin combining programs with other local smaller schools. Drip by drip, the sport will die in years to come as we know it. Almost becoming an olympic type sport. With Football and sport only HSs providing it as an opportunity to those that qualify and are interested. The costs are too great, liability now sky high, and mom and dad steering their sons to other sport opportunities.

Having the coaching carousel hit DEFCON 5 right after the last regular season game, and before the conference championship games and bowl season/playoffs, is a really bad look for the sport. At a minimum, this sport needs to coordinate National Signing Day and the coaching carousel so they don't interfere with the sport's actual games on the field. CFB's season is very short as it is, and the current calendar for coaching changes and National Signing Day are compressing interest in the sport to about 4 months. Since CFB is now a semi-pro sport anyway, the powers that be might as well follow the lead of the NFL and expand interest throughout the year.

The pay raise goes without saying; no one is moving for less money. But they both could have stayed put and done very well. Neither were gonna win a National Championship though.

Uhhh, no. The last ND national title - 1988, a longgggg time ago - featured a black QB and Black players have been prominent at ND for over 50 years. A Black QB started for them in the ā€˜60s so they were way ahead on that score.

Try harder.

Notre Dame opened a new indoor practice facility for football in 2019. They gave Kelly everything he wanted and nothing happens overnight.
If he was able to recruit and coach up QBs, things might have been different.

Well, kids in those age groups should not be playing tackle football IMHO. Maybe that is the message parents are sending, that they don't want their kids playing at those ages, but when they get to HS, they may.

As an aside, when asked at what age kids should play the sport, I believe JVP said a long time ago "not before 8th grade".

If Kelly was at LSU, and Riley at USC, and ND and OU came calling with raises similar to what they're getting now, they'd being going in the opposite direction. An NC only matters inasmuch as it provides them job security ($$) and more $$ per annum. That's it. And you'd have a bunch of people saying Kelly's leaving LSU because it's too hard to win/recruit consistently in the SEC against teams like Bama and Georgia, and Riley's leaving USC it's a better environment for football, blah, blah, blah. It's all about the money. Like all of major college sports, sadly.

Not sure I agree, but hard to disprove. Money isn't always everything; Kelly appeared to be willing to stay at ND at his current salary with some concessions for football players. If Oklahoma stayed in the Big XII, I could see Riley staying - he's recruited very well nationally to make up for a lack of local talent. But, USC is Excalibur stuck in the stone - once harnessed, it will be very difficult for anyone to stop them at a minimum getting to the CFP rather easily. I think the next guy at Oklahoma will be a step down from Riley; it's simply not as good a job in the SEC as it is in the Big XII (look at ATM).

I mean, PC was there for a decade and won three NCs. You could say the same about pretty much any program - how good was Bama post Bear, pre Saban? Florida pre-Spurrier? USC claims something like six or seven NCs. Football in California has changed over the years; it's far and away one of the best HS football states and that may not have always been the case. Nothing is static.

Petey was a confirmed cheat. Saban has never been confirmed or even rumored. To me that is the difference. We haven't seen greatness from USC or UCLA for decades other than the PC blip. I just don't know that USC is a "great program."

The sport is changing. 8th, grade, 9th, 10th, it doesn't matter if the other guy opposite you is 40lbs heavier and faster. If they are not starting young like most all sports, they will find other sports. The NFL is killing football with their "Kill" the other guy mentality for half a century. We all like watching it, but, I would not want any son or grandson of mine playing it.

I'm not convinced USC is a great program either. I do think it is a sleeping giant. Great local recruiting grounds, good weather, etc., makes it attractive with the right coach. Not much competition in the PAC 12 either. I don't think USC will have much of a problem knocking Oregon off the top. Now whether that's enough to make noise on a playoff level, I don't know.
