1. Croom still football coach. We lose Tyler Russell to Bama in recruiting. Our QB is the Hollingsworth kid. No Bumphis. Recruiting class half what it is now. 2. Raffo as baseball coach. Lose 5 or 6 more games than we did this year. Sign a typical late Polk recruiting class. 3. Basketball about the same. 4. Bulldog Club drops to 5000 members. 5. Spring football game attended by 4 or 5 thousand fans. 6. Going into summer, we are losing ground in football and baseball. The only exciting talk is basketball.

If LT were still here and Croom had ben retained, even for just one more season, I seriously think it would have set MSU football back another 7 years. With OM having the success they had last year and are likely to have this year, I just don't see us recovering in state for a long, long time. I hate to say it but Croom being retained would have really made my life significantly less enoyable. Sad, I know.

Right now, we're in a Recession and I see the economy getting worse before it gets better. A Larry Templeton type might be what we need right now- making sure things run in the black, checking every penny going out of our program, keeping coaching salaries as low as possible. If you noticed this year in baseball, we only had 10,000 plus for ONE GAME, that being the Kentucky game Super Bulldog Weekend. The rest of the time, we were barely above 2000 for SEC games. That's because when the economy is sluggish, the first thing that gets cut is non-essential spending, things like going to sporting events. Even when Cohen's teams become contenders, we may be looking at lower crowds simply because of higher unemployment, higher gas costs, etc. Greg Byrne has never been through a recession, Larry Templeton has. A Larry Templeton-type would make sure our Athletic Department wasn't run into the ground with heavy debts we couldn't pay.

That said, we needed a Greg Byrne-type during the 1990's and 2000's, back when the economy was roaring. If we had that, we'd have had Urban Meyer as Head Football Coach (Sherrill would've been fired after either the 2001 or 2002 season, and Meyer was considered a hot up and coming coach at Bowling Green), Paul Maineri as Head baseball coach, and Kelvin Sampson as Basketball coach (didn't say all the choices would be great, but Sampson was considered a hot young coach in the late 1990's and early 2000's).

We were paying Croom $1,800,000 per year under Templeton, we are paying Mullen around $1,100,000 this year.

I think Byrne is doing just fine.

How would we have lost Russell to Bama? Firing Croom is what almost lost Russell. I'm as happy as anyone about not having to see LT in office motorboating the SEC commish, but Byrne didn't get us Russell. Some credit goes to Mullen for doing damage control and keeping Russell, but you gotta give credit to Croom for that one. Maybe he promised Russell a golf cart?

If Scooba is going to look up stats for you I think he should find out the probability of you winning prom king next year.

I think we would have lost Russell. Bama and USC/Spurrier were putting serious heat on him if you remember. Let's say we don't fire Croom at Thanksgiving. Then there's two plus months for Russell to be recruited by Bama before signing day. The only thing Croom was selling was PT. Saban was selling championships. And who couldn't see we were going nowhere with Coach Croom. I think Russell and family would have seen this. Kinda like Garrett did. The interesting question to me is whether Garrett might not have reneged on his commitment if we'd had Mullen prior to that point as well. The good new is that it's all irrelevant now. None of this horrific scenario ever played out.
