Yeah, personal foul! The "Bold New City" as Haaaaaaarvey called it can't even host a high school championship series w/ a few thousand people w/out screwing it up, much less a large crowd. They open a single ticket booth on each side, have 1 concession stand on each side and nobody directing traffic before or after the games, NOBODY. I'm a metro Jackson resident, wish it weren't like that but it is. Don't even get me started on that cluster <17> of a pro game the Saints and Colts played either.

Should Little Rock, Arkansas host a bowl game?

LR will get a bowl game before Jackson. Because it is a similar sized city with a similar state population. However, LR is a nicer city to visit. War Memorial is nicer too.

Calling this a bowl game is being generous.

My guess is that 90% of college football fans won't ever know this bowl exists or have a reason to care. I'd rather Jackson not waste their time on an event that small. The parties involved would likely 17 it up and it end up being a net loss for the city anyhow...

What is the NCAA going to do when there aren't enough bowl eligible teams to fill all the bowls? It's going to happen, it's just a question of when.

It's better than Montgomery. Or at least it could be.

Having been to both downtowns in the past six months, you couldn't be more wrong. Montgomery's downtown is rejuvenated and clean. It's got a great convention center, some decent restaurants and pretty cool minor league park, not to mention the river. Jackson's downtown sucks. Period.

I don't think there needs to be a bowl in Montgomery per se, but I would certainly rather visit there than Jackson.

That's my guess. They're going to allow a special exemption for a 5-7 team to go to a bowl. I can't see them telling the bowl, sorry, but you can't play your game this year. The other option would be to let the bowl take a I-AA team that did not make the I-AA playoffs. Either way, it's going to be ugly.

I'm very familiar with that area. Jackson could do some amazing things too, if they wanted. But it seems everyone just wants to give up on it. I guess I should rephrase this, and say that Jackson has more potential than Montgomery.

Pardon me for attempting to think positively of anything Jackson-related.

#1 Mississippi is the only state that is ineligible to hold a NCAA postseason event, which would include having a host site for the NCAA basketball tournament or any form of an NCAA bowl game. Write your representative/senator about how simply changing the flag would make this go away if you're really upset about it.

#2 Jackson, MS < Little Rock, AR < Montgomery, AL. Oxford would have a better shot at hosting a bowl game than Jackson.

#3 They've been talking about making an exception for 5-7 teams for a while now. I personally would like to see top ranked IAA teams play instead.

I find it ironic that the state with the highest percentage of minorities is the only one that cant host a ncca event because of a racist flag.

As a resident of Rankin Co

I would be more likely to go see us play in a bowl game if it were in Montgomery than if it were in Jackson.

And I've only driven thru Montgomery a time or two.

You can think as positive as you want. But the difference between the two is that Montgomery IS doing something. Jackson is a big mess and it doesn't look to be getting better. I'm in agreement that it's a shame. As a Mississippian, it's depressing. They should've put the Braves stadium downtown instead of in Pearl. That was the most recent big mistake that they made. The parks in Montgomery and Birmingham have done a lot for both downtowns.

Jackson has no attractions or hotel and the vet is a dump. I would rather watch Mississippi state play a bowl game in Oxford than Jackson

If Jackson State ever builds their proposed domed stadium, then I could see a bowl game coming to Jackson. I don't know why though, because Jackson doesn't offer very many attractions for a visitor in my opinion. Mobile, Jackson, and Birmingham are all bare essentials/industrial cities with virtually no exciting or unique vanities that attract tourists. The total bowl number will continue to increase as long as people continue to watch the games on tv. It's our own faults.

Jackson will come around just like B'ham and Montgomery did, it'll just take 20 years or so. B'ham moved the Barons out to Hoover, now have moved them back into town. Seems MS is always 10-20 years behind Alabama. The Pearl area will blow up, then folks will start downtown again.

But for now, we have a football stadium. May as well play a bowl game there, and it would be a better venue than Cranston Field in Montgomery.

You bring up an excellent point, that I will both agree and disagree with.

I really do think MS could capitalize on the tourism industry, especially in the Delta and all the way down to Natchez. Embrace the civil rights stuff. Birmingham has done that, they have all sorts of museums downtown. And this is where I disagree with you on attractions. Mobile has tons of stuff. Jackson has the least of the three, but there's history EVERYWHERE that could be capitalized on. How ironic would it be, have all the Yankees come down to MS to spend their money on our history?

I think Crampton Bowl might be a better stadium than Jackson's. Sure, Jackson's is twice as big and then some, but this is a Sun Belt/MAC match up. There aren't 60,000 Mississippians and Alabamians combined that want to see that. So who cares how big the stadium is?

Personally, I'd like to see a C-USA matchup vs. an SEC team there. NO REASON we couldn't have a Birmingham Bowl type game. Have you seen Legion Field lately?

But you do have a point. Competing with B'ham/Memphis/Shreveport might be a better comparison. Or even Mobile.

Most of our history is of a negative light though: civil rights, poverty, civil war. Ill give you that Mobile does have more to do than Jackson or Birmingham, but its not enough to attract a bigger bowl game than what they already have. Its like this, a great tourist/bowl game city can be compared to a sports car. Los Angeles, Miami, and New Orleans would be like Corvettes....Houston, Dallas, San Diego would be Camaro SS's....Mobile and Birmingham would be the Chevy Cavaliers with spoilers and rims. Now as for Jackson..... Jackson would be the rusty 1990 Nissan Sentra with 400,000 miles and a missing passenger door.

Why can't Jackson host one at the 60K seat Vet?

I like how this thread almost immediately turned to a "bash Jackson" thread.
On topic, I also want Jackson to host. Downtown is slowly adding more and more, hotels, restaurants, condos. Any event that might bring more money and attention to this town has my vote.

I stayed at the Kind Edward Hotel last year and it was a very good experience, from the facilities to the "hep." It was a two night stay with a wedding involved, so don't know if there is anything to "do" there. I used to like the zoo.

I think it's negative because they tried to repress it for so long. Own it, embrace it, make money off of it. But this stuff is state-wide, not really bowl game type stuff.

And I think you're wrong on B'ham, they have a lot going on there.

That seems to be exactly what they are trying to do now, with the Blues marathon, civil rights museum, freedom riders trail. There are art and music festivals in fondren and belhaven almost monthly not to mention the blues fest earlier this summer and the r&b fest this month. Jackson is fighting a winning battle if people will only come out to support it, but I guess they are too busy driving through Montgomery.

It's sad but the black thugs are ruining everything. Columbus opened a new bowling alley this past weekend and it was mobbed by young black males and females who were not even bowling. They would pay $5 just to come in and hangout in mobs of 20. There were just as many in the parking lot playing their loud vulgar music and sitting around on cars shouting vulgar crap at the people coming to bowl. This family who opened the alley intended on this being a place where families could bring their kids and have fun but Columbus finest has found them another place to burglarized and rob easy targets. Police didn't do **** about it either after many complaints.

About the best thing you can do there is price them out by charging more than $5. Like say... requiring a 3 game minimum per person for $5 a game. It's like this everywhere now unfortunately. If the cops came and ran them off, they would just return a few hours later when the coast was clear.

No doubt. People would rather bash than be part of the solution, as seen in this thread.

Agreed. But you can do stuff about loitering. They can run them off if they wanted.

South Carolina ineligible as well

I'm about 98% positive South Carolina is also ineligible to hold NCAA postseason events (besides early NIT rounds and Regionals/Super Regionals). It's not a state flag issue for them but because they have a confederate monument on the State Capitol grounds. The "Confederate Flag" flew above the Capitol Dome itself until the early 2000's.

Not sure I'd attend a State game in Jackson.

Been to more than quite a few.
