Why would he go anywhere else? You probably have to look towards the SEC first. In the LSU thread some people mentioned him going there, I don't know if he would. We all know he'd probably go to Florida. But that's the only job I could see him taking, unless he just continued to win but yet still not get the big recruits to come to Starkville.

Alot of people outside of Starkville think that our job is nothing, but we all know that's stupid. We'llbe paying him upwardsof 2 million after this season. I don't know anywhere in the country he'd leave us to go for that amount of money right now.

But in the next few years,these are who I'd worry the most about:

1) Florida - if Urban self destructs
2) Penn State - when Joe Pa pulls the trigger, close by Mullen's home
3) Notre Dame - any coach would

Responding to the Penn State suggestion, there was a poster on here the other day that said he had strong ties to the Penn State athletic department and they would almost certainly hire form within when JoePa goes. Show yourself whoever you were.I think Kelly is going to do well at ND and we won't have to worry about them for a while. Urban may blow a gasket soon. Florida to me is and will be the primary concern for the next few years.

SEC Jobs that he could leave for.

1. Florida- Don't see that one opening up.
2. Georgia- Possibility this year.
3. LSU- Possibility this year.
4. Alabama- Saban is entrenched for a while.
5. Tennessee- Dooley gets at least 3 years.

National Jobs that might attract him.
1. Michigan- Very possible this opens up soon.
2. Penn State- See Michigan.
3. Pittsburgh- Just signed extention with Dave. With this one and Penn, I put them on here because he's from the region.
4. Syracuse- Just signed coach. Another home-location job.
5. There are obvious ones that he would take should the situation warrant, but that probably goes for 90% of the coaches in college football.

Reality is, I don't think there are that many jobs he leaves for, and it would take really good timing. We are an SEC school, that soon will be paying him very well if things go well. He has said more than once that he prefers coaching in the SEC, so we have that going for us. I just don't think he goes anywhere for at least 3-4 more years. The one job that does worry me is the Georgia job, should we win 7-8 games this year.

I'd say Colorado, possibly A&M or Arizona State...I dont see Michigan hiring another Spread guy if RichRod doesnt pan out...

Fla could be a possibility but I also think Fla feels they can hire anybody, and Mullen would only be the 3rd or 4th choice there. Notre Dame? They wont be hiring another coach for at least 3 years, if not more...And no way on Penn State either- JoePa probably names his successor

Concerning ND: Kelley(sp?) will get at least 4 years with the domers. More than enough time to get work done here.
Penn State I believe has an unofficially named HCIW who's basically already running the team and has been for like 5 years.

If he leaves to go anywhere it will be a big, big job. We can already pay him 2 million if he's successful and only really big programs will pay more than that currently.

ESPN sucks but they're probably a reason why we might keep Dan longer than we would without them.

edit: meant to mention what coach did about the spread and Michigan, but yeah, I agree.

could be a possibility. And yes, I could see him going there. Georgia could be one.

With Bo Pellini being a viable candidate to replace Miles at LSU, Nebraska could be one other.

Of course It would ALL depend on our success this year. I agree with others that he cant just have a decent year. It will have to be stellar with some big upsets, close losses to good teams and no bad losses and a good bowl showing. All of those things happening to us this year would be unlikely at best. But they arent impossible.

I think people exaggerate a lot that to the point Mullen would jump ship at the 1st offer. In reality, coaches in situations like his(Riley at Org. St, Leach at TT for 10 years, Ferentz in Iowa, etc.) enjoy where they are and try to build a consistent winner in that spot. Outside of UF I don't see a program Mullen would instantly jump ship over for, not even UM as Rich Rod's spread there has been a MASSIVE failure and it would be more of the same with Mullen.

Arizona? Really? That's one of the worst football jobs in the major football conference. You're 2nd fiddle football wise in a talent barren state in a 3rd, maybe 4th wheel conference. Not to mention football isn't even the biggest sport on campus.

Big Ten - Ohio St, Michigan , Penn St
Big 12 - Texas, Texas A&M, Nebrasksa, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado(possibly)
PAC 10 -USC, Oregon
ACC - Florida St, Miami, Virginia Tech
Big East - West Virginia , Pitt
& Notre Dame

These are all better jobs - I think everything else is a lateral move or a step down - You could roughly argue there around 25-30 better head coaching positions out there than the one at MSU

Two, the fact that it is a major conference and there would be the chance to make a major splash by simply making them competitive would be easier than what he has here with the lowest budget and 6 other teams that pretty much dominate the conference.

Three, I'm sure Arizona wouldnt have it's mind made up about what kind of offense he should run unlike Michigan or Nebraska.

Four, They once were pretty good (desert swarm) so there is the proof that they can be a major player.

Five, Having coached in Utah, he's recruited that area of the country and knows it.

Of course what Im contending would have to be coupled with a MAJOR amount of money to move him away from the SEC money. However, Arizona being primarily basketball (by the way, have they really been taht good lately?) might not be much of a consideration.

2. State may have the lowest budget now but things are on the up and up with the Bulldog Club and stadium expansion soon to be in the works.

4. State was pretty good only a short decade ago with Jackie.

5. Being with Meyer he's coached all over the country...I don't think that matters.

Money is huge as we all know, and chances are they could be throwing it at a basketball coach before too long.

considering he is happy at MSU and really is committed, that the transition alone would weed out jobs like Auburn, Virginia Tech, Pittsburghand Texas A&M. Proximity to talent, seeing how Mullen likes to recruit his area, would probably weed out West Virginia, Tennessee, Nebraska, Colorado and Oregon.

So a more realistic list is Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Florida State, Miamiand Notre Dame.

a bad place compared to Arizona. Its just my point starts with Ninja (someone he already trusts). It considers budgets which Arizona has much more of even if they dont historically use it for football. The success at MSU under Jackieis simply seen as about the best we can do based on the rest of the competition in the sec whereas I dont think that is the case in the Pac 10 with Arizona. The area isnt unknown to him.

But I do think you are correct in saying that they will try to get back to basketball prominence before they throw the money at football. One other poster pointed out that Stoops is doing a good job there and that would be a consideration too. But ninja is about the revenue generator and that is football at least potentially so.

But that's not the only variable. If it were Kirk Ferentz sure the hell wouldn't be in Iowa, Leach wouldn't have had to deal with James this past year as he would have been gone, Riley would be gone from Corvalis, Cutcliffe at Duke saying NO to UTenn, etc. It's never clear cut.

That's why Florida and big northern schools pose the biggest threat. Maybe Pitt could fit that mold.

Cutcliffe knew he wasn't the right man for Tennessee and with his health problems, he probably realized that job would kill him. Riley is the rare coach who will stay at a less desirable job. But don't think for a second that jobs like Tennessee, Auburn, etc. aren't better jobs than ours is in a lot more ways than just money. I hope that Mullen would turn down schools like that, but to expect him to is naive.

And what makes you so certain that UF does want him? Because living here, I know for a fact that although they are good friends, it is not what Urban wanted or wants down the road. Mullen is to much like him, wanting his hand in everything. You can't have two people involved in a program trying to do that, even if one of them is behind the scenes.

In any case, the vast majority of college football coaches don't last all that long at any school in reality. The goal is to find someone who will leave your program in better shape than he found it and that's what Mullen is doing.

but I don't completely buy that. They will at least speak with Ferentz when JoePa hangs it up (or dies). Ferentz is a Pennsylvania guy. I think he has been waiting for the job to open up.

he will deserve a bump in salary to 2.0 million dollars. If he gets State to 7-5 and a bowl, I'd double his salary to 2.4. State can never likely pony up enough $'s to keep Mullen from jumping ship in a few years to a major program if he can build State up to a consistent winner, but we can darned sure offer enough salary to prevent a so called lateral move or barely upward move. Need to show the man the money though and the love in a proactive fashion if State can have anything other than another losing season in 2010.

The biggest risk I see in the next 2 years: LSU if the Hat remains a complete dubmas and Mullen can gradually improve our program to a 7 or 8 game winner. Recall that it was the corndogs who kicked off the incest party of SEC football coaching changes when they hired Dinardo from Vanderbilt.

I think Mullen stays, but Colorado does have a national championship on its resume, and don't underestimate the money in the Rocky Mountain Empire. Add to that the quality of life and CO becomes a possibility IMHO. That being said, if Hawkins doesn't turn it around this year I think the Buffs will go after someone out this way.
