If Pope gets to the Elite 8 this year, do you want him back next year?

Elite 8???? In the NIT?? I mean who are we kidding here, we can’t even beat Steven Pearl so how we making an elite 8?? I wanted him to succeed more than anyone but it’s apparent he’s in over his head. We can’t even have a play to inbound the ball vs a press??? Then other than OO driving and Aberdeens mid range, what other offense do we have?? I’m sorry but I’ve lost all hope in pope cause we still make the same coaching mistakes for 2 yrs.

For me personally, it’s not about the wins and losses (obviously it is, but I have a bigger problem with Pope than his success or lack thereof), it’s his personality that I have a problem with. He doesn’t fit with Kentucky nor its fans at all. The lack of passion is genuinely making me wince. I can’t handle his personality. It’s why I hated Mitch’s obsession with Scott Drew. Who cares if he won a title, his personality just doesn’t match.

It’s why I didn’t care if Cal won more games in his last few years, I wanted him to retire, the love was clearly lost between him and the fanbase. Now we’re stuck in an even bigger loveless marriage. At least Cal and Kentucky loved each other at one point. Some of the fans might love Pope but he sure as heck hasn’t shown us much love, at the very least he isn’t capable of showing it.

I voted a resounding NO. Only way he can win me back is a Final Four. And even then only if, right after those nets get cut down, he lets every UK fan in the building line up at midcourt while he stands there and lets them all kick him in the balls. Maybe then I’ll jump back on the bandwagon.

The 47% that voted no...Man, you have to be kidding.
I seriously doubt we make that run...but if we do, and Pope comes in no roster year one and goes S16(with injuries), then has a bad year(with 3 kids out) but takes the team to the Elite 8 and he is ran off, the fanbase and the program would be the laughingstock of all sports. And Hurley, Oats, etc would laugh in our face, no matter what the money. They wouldn't leave their gig for a joke like that

So you say personality of Pope is your issue with him? So if we were 25-2 and ranked 1st currently and signed 4 top 10 recruits for next year you’d still want Pope gone? Honest question.

I voted yes, of course. Sweet 16 and elite 8 in 2 years isn’t fireable. Having said that, I don’t have faith in him long term. I’d probably think it’s a stroke of luck and probably doesn’t mean much long term unless he turned it into recruiting success. But I just don’t see that. I always look to what I think the coach is capable of long term.

1. Have to win SEC titles many of the years you’re here.
2. Cant have large ups and downs (17-10 seasons every other year) must be consistent. This is why I began to sour on Calipari.
3. Must go deep in tournaments routinely.

He can’t do this even if he lucked into an elite 8. But he wouldn’t be fireable yet either.

Doesn’t matter anyway, this team going to the elite 8 has as much chance of happening as I do marrying Cals daughter and getting his tattoo inked in my dead grandmothers asss. Yes, in it. That sht can’t happen.

No, of course not. But if he were winning 3 or 4 more games this year and last year, I’d still feel like something is “off” with him.

But how a coach acts is part of the fun of college basketball. I love the larger than life personalities. Before Cal started going after fans he was genuinely delightful to watch.

I don’t see how anyone could vote no on that at this point. It’s your right to vote how you want though lol I just don’t get it
what I think it is, really, is what I’ve been saying. It’s not 50/50 in favor pope anymore. It’s 70/30 - 75-25ish. He’s lost most support and people are done with it. When a vote here says make a sweet 16 and an elite 8 in his first two years you’d still fire? People are done with it and see no long term success. I still think some are missing the recruiting. Make the elite 8 okay. He still cannot recruit and it’s the lifeblood. A lucky draw or a stroke of luck in the games to hit a path to an elite 8 doesn’t change the problem. So that’s probably why. Mark is also very cringy and doesn’t really fit the mold. Just too many issues to let slide over a good draw for a season. To some.

If he gets to the Elite 8, or I would say even the Sweet 16, he 100% has to be back. He’s back regardless anyway.
No question. No coach is getting fired for making it to two S16s in 2 seasons. Especially when we hadn’t seen the 2nd weekend since 2019. I’m not happy at all but it would be delusional to think that’s not good enough.

And, I don’t need my arm twisted to make me say, “fire the underachieving coach.” I’ve been LOD from Tubby thru Calipari & was on it early in each case. But, S16s & E8s in the first two seasons aren’t disappointing enough for me to want heads rolling. Sadly, both points are irrelevant as we won’t make the S16 & Pope will be back, regardless. 😂😭

Not answering yes or no to a highly improbable hypothetical.
Seems to be designed to reinforce the unfair and "bad fan" narrative

I voted yes, but I still wouldn't be overly optimistic about his future here due to his recruiting issues. But he would get another year or two to prove he could get things turned around.

What would be a fair question in your mind? Sweet Sixteen?
No. It's how you phrased it as if it's the only scenario. It would fairer to ask: Do you want Pope back if he doesn't at least make the elite eight? See the difference? If we operate under the pretense that this scenario actually happens it makes you look like an unreasonable fan if you vote no, when in reality you might not just see it as a realistic scenario. I mean we aren't too far removed asking if we want Pope back if he shoots candy out of his rear, saves a puppy's life and solves world hunger.

Pope has to fix recruiting.

If he goes to EE or even FF but doesn’t fix recruiting we’re still basically screwed if we keep him.

OTOH if he magically fixes recruiting I won’t care if he wins another game this year. Write this year off as a loss and let’s see what he can do with a Duke-level roster since we’re an above-Duke-level program. I’d be happy to.
